One of my most amazing experiences was spending a night in the middle of the Amazon
rainforest.
Our guide was Aparecida, a woman who was brought up in the middle of the dense rainforest.
Since there are no trails, we had to cut our way through the jungle searching for a good place to
spend the night. We followed her. As she was cutting the branches and other obstacles, it was like
being in an adventurous movie. After a couple of hours, we found a big tree which seemed ideal to
attach the hammocks (吊床) to. We cleared the ground around and hang up our hammocks.
In the raining season, we had to prepare for unexpected showers. We also wanted to sleep
under the sky, so we built a small shelter in case it rained.
When our fire was out, complete darkness came upon us, and this was the moment when the
jungle around woke up. We started to hear louder and louder noise of crickets, small birds and
monkeys. Many times we woke up during the night, when small branches or leaves fell into our
hammocks. Sometimes the noise was really strong, especially when the howler monkeys were roaring
in the distance. We could not sleep deeply, but we enjoyed listening to the music of the rainforest.
It was an unbelievable experience.
We got up at 4 am to see the sunrise. Aparecida took us to a small trail where we could get
familiar with different herbs and unusual jungle fruits. On the way out of the jungle, we saw a deer
crossing the road.
Later, we took a boat to a place where two rivers, the Amazon and Tapajos, join each other. In
the short two-hour boat trip, we saw loads of animals: sloths, different parrots, colorful birds and
iguanas. We enjoyed especially our encounter with the sloths, which move about so slowly on top of
the trees, and when they see you they try to hide, but they do it so slowly that it makes you smile.

Sleeping in a noisy room isn’t only distracting (使人分心的), but it can also harm your health.
Although researchers have known for decades that long-term loud noises can harm us, it’s only
recently become recognized as a widespread problem.
In a new review of previously published studies, researchers from Germany and Denmark took
a look at the ways in which noises, such as an airplane passing by or jackhammer digging in the
ground, can affect our hearts. Perhaps the most obvious impact of a loud sound while you are
sleeping is that it can wake you up. But, even if you don’t remember hearing the noise or you don’t
physically get out of bed, it can disrupt you in ways you may not realize.
“Noise is not just causing annoyance, but it actually makes us sick,”said Dr Thomas M俟nzel, a
professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. “Regardless of where the sound is coming from,
if it gets louder than 60 decibels (分貝), it can increase the risk of heart disease.”
When our body hears these noises, it reacts with a stress reaction. In this case, these sudden
and unexpected noises cause hormones (荷爾蒙 ) to speed up and eventually damage the heart.
Although the chance that a single noise will affect you is unlikely, it’s the continuous
the sound that can finally affect you.
“But our heart health isn’t the only cause for concern. Long-term noise may also raise the risk
of type 2 diabetes (糖尿病 ), depression, and anxiety disorders,”he warns. In the future, M俟nzel
plans to examine how noises from cars, planes, and other vehicles affect the brain. But despite the
amount or the depth of research he conducts, it’ll take the help of politicians to improve the effect
of noise on our health. “Politicians have to take into account, in particular, the new findings,”
M俟nzel said,“As for aircraft noise and airports, it is important to make new laws and set new lower
noise limits that protect people living close by the airport instead of the owners of the airport.”

If you could travel in time, where would you go Perhaps you would watch a performance of a

The possibility of time travel is indeed attractive. Stories exploring the subject have been
around for hundreds of years. Perhaps the best-known example is science fiction novel
, written by H. G. Wells and published in 1895. It was adapted into at least two feature
films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and many comic book adaptations. It
contributes to the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator
to travel purposefully and selectively. The term“time machine”, coined by Wells, is now universally
referred to a vehicle transporting people into the far future.
But could time travel actually be possible Some scientists say yes, in theory. They propose
using cracks (裂縫) in time and space called“wormholes”, which could be used as shortcuts (捷徑)
to other periods. Einstein’s theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme conditions. And
Stephen Hawking says you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship, going at nearly
the speed of light. Though building such a spaceship wouldn’t of course be simple.
Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”. It
asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather
killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born. If the time traveler wasn’t
born, how would he travel back in time
And would you really like to visit the future In H. G. Wells’book, the main character travels
into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then travels 30
million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacle (觸角).

At the breaktime the next day, I saw Roy sitting alone watching the kickball game. Guilt pushed me to him. Sitting next to him, I gradually told him the whole thing about how my hurried assumption turned into such a terrible rumor. “I’m sorry. I wish I had never said that,” I apologized, daring not to look into his eyes. Annoyance and surprise flickered across his face. But seconds later, he lowered his head and said quietly, “It’s okay. I guess I wasn’t very nice to you, either.” His words relieved me, but I could feel he was still sad.
Now that Roy had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the breaktime was over. I walked towards the kickball players and called for their attention. “Roy didn’t beat up anyone,” I stated, explaining what actually happened. Whispers of astonishment spread and finally one player shouted, “Alright, Roy, let’s play together”. A smile broke through Roy’s gloomy face, “Jimmy, let’s join them!” He glanced at me shyly.
