Students can understand, analyze and evaluate Wang Hui's experience and extract helpful suggestions through discourse understanding, understand and respect the traditional customs and lifestyles of other countries, enhance cultural awareness, and develop cultural tolerance. 3. Students can express the differences between Chinese and English based on combing diagrams, and use modal verbs must/mustn't, can/can't, need/needn't, etc. to give helpful suggestions to friends who come to China for tourism or study. 4. Talk and share 1.1. Give advice to Wang Hui, a Chinese boy who is going to England as an exchange students about what she should do before leaving for England. T: If Wang Hui wants to have a wonderful experience in England, what should he do before she leaves for England Can you give him some advice 1.2. Ask students to use the structures: He need/can/should/must/had better... He needn’t/can’t/ must’t/had better not ... 1.3. Give some possible answers to students. T: I believe you must have lots of good ideas. Let me share my ideas. Maybe, he needs to find out his passport. Without passport, we can not walk out of our country. Also, he can buy some medicine. It will be really helpful when necessary. And, he had better know the English way of life. That’s very important. Do you agree Purpose of the design: Apply the key sentences and touch the British cultural background in general. 2. Free talk 2.1. Brainstorming: Show a picture about different aspects of English life and help students talk about anything they know about England to activate the topic of this unit and accomplish the teaching of key words: gentleman and so on with meaningful icons. 2.2. Ask students to use the structures: In England, you can/should/need/must … 2.3. Give some sentences about special icons of England. T: There are many symbols of England in this picture. This is the hat of a gentleman. They always wear hats when go out. And this is a special taxi in England, we call it cab. Also, double-deck bus is a symbol of London. It is always red. People even think it is the national treasure of England. Purpose of the design: Lead into the topic and review the target language structure. Attract students’ attention and satisfy their curiosity. 3. Predict 3.1. Only show the title of the passage and ask students: What might Wang Hui do in England 3.2. Give possible answers to students. Purpose of the design: To give a real task and arouse the students interests. To active their background knowledge and develop the predict strategy. Step 2: While-reading 1. Read and choose Invite students to analyze the structure of the passage to know the narrative passage better and further. Choose the correct of the structure of the passage. 2. Read and find Ask students to find out Wang Hui’s attitude towards his stay and the way he told us. Q1: According to the passage, what did Wang Hui think of his stay Q2: How did he tell us A2: It’s by listing examples. 3. Read and match Present students both the passage and the pictures and ask them to match the pictures with four paragraphs and title them. 4. Read and complete Read and get the detail information about the different examples of English way of life talked in the passage. And complete the table when talk about the four examples. Example 1: Greeting 1. Show a picture about English way of greeting. Ask students to look and say how people greet in England. 2. Show another two pictures about different situation and ask students to react. Q1: What can you say when you meet him for the first time Q2: What can you say when you get to know each other better 3. Conclude the way to use Mr/Mrs. Summarize what is last name and first name by using examples. 4. Show Chinese way of greeting as comparison. Ask students how do Chinese greet at the same situation. Example 2: Afternoon tea 1. Ask students to focus on the time and food in English afternoon tea. Q1: When do English have afternoon tea Q2: What do they have for afternoon tea 2. Talk about traditional Chinese morning tea and afternoon tea as well. Lead to the idea that people may change their ways of life as time goes by. Example 3: Traditional food 1. Ask students to read and answer: Q1:What food is also special in England Q2: Where can we buy it 2. Focus on the meaning of “high street”. Show two pictures to students and let them choose the right picture represent “high street”. 3. Give a specific explanation from Oxford Dictionary about “high street”. Example 4: Waiting on line 1. Show students a picture about bus station and ask students to guess what may the man say 2. Give two choices for students to choose. No.1 Hurry up, you are in my way! No.2 Excuse me, are you waiting for the bus? 3. Ask students to read the picture carefully and find out the smile on the man’s face. Lead to the idea that people may change their ways of life, but good manners never die. We should always be in a polite way. Purpose of the design: To compare the four examples with the the Chinese ways and encourage students to talk about the Chinese way of the four aspects. 5. Ask students to answer in “When we visit…, we must(not)/could(not)/….”. 5.2. Lead to the idea that when in Rome, do as Romans do. Purpose of the design: To help students get close to English life style further and figure out the potential feeling of the writer. 6. Summary 6.1. Ask students to review the passage and give their own ideas. Q: Do you like the English way of life Why 6.2. Summarize the passage by asking students: “How to “taste” different ways of life ” 6.3. Stimulate students to experience British life style from three aspects: eyes to see, mind to think and heart to feel. Step 3: Post-reading Extensive talk Give advice for Tom, an exchange student who is from England. Students try to add examples of Chinese way of life after each example of the English way of life of the passage by Wanghui. And then present. Purpose of the design: To encourage students think deeply and analyze the writer’s opinions and help students understand different ways of life. To get students to compare different ways of life and build cultural confidence. Homework: Must-do: 1. Retell Wang Hui’s expriences in England. 2. Write a letter to Tom to tell him the differences between English and Chinese way of life and give him some advice. Choose to do: 1.
