labourer n. 勞動者

二、課文精講
1.For years, villagers believed that Endley Farm was haunted.多年來，村民們一直認為恩得利農場在鬧鬼。
時間狀語for years放在句首，強調這個農場“鬧鬼"許多年了。
2.The farm was owned by two brothers,Joe and Bob Cox.恩得利農場屬于喬考科斯和鮑勃考科斯兄弟倆所有。
Joe and Bob Cox是two brothers的同位語，起解釋說明的作用。
3.They employed a few farmhands, but no one was willing to work there long.他們雇了幾個農工，但誰也不愿意在那兒長期工作下去。
but作轉折連詞時，后半句一點是對前半句內容的轉折或否定。
4.Every time a worker gave up his job, he told the same story.每次雇工辭職后都敘述著同樣的故事。
every time在句首，引導時間狀語從句。
5.Farm labourers said that they always woke up to find that work had been done overnight.雇工們說，常常一早起來發現有人在夜里把活干了。
that引導賓語從句，交代said的內容。The work had been done overnight是省去了引導詞that的賓語從句，作find的賓語。
6.Hay had been cut and cowsheds had been cleaned.干草已切好，牛棚也打掃干凈了。
had been cut和had been cleaned均為過去完成時的被動語態，強調在過去的過去事情已經做完了。
7.A farm worker,who stayed up all night, claimed to have seen a figure cutting corn in the moonlight.有一個徹夜未眠的雇工還聲稱他看見一個人影在月光下收割莊稼。
who引導一個非限制性定語從句，對這個farm worker作進一步的補充修飾。
8. In time, it became an accepted fact that the Cox brothers employed a conscientious ghost that did most of their workfor them.隨著時間的流逝，考科斯兄弟雇了一個盡心盡責的鬼，他們家的活大部分都讓鬼給干了，這件事成了公認的事實。
第一個that引導同位語從句，對fact進行充分的解釋說明，即"事實是什么”。

:that引導賓語從句，交代learn的內容。
12.Everyone went to the funeral, for the 'ghost was none other than Eric Cox, a third brother who was supposed to havedied as a young man.大家都去參加了葬禮，因為那“鬼""不是別人，正是農場主的兄弟埃里克.考科斯。人們以為埃里克年輕時就死了。
none other than表示·正是”，起強調作用。
Who引導定語從句，修飾a third brother，說明這第三個弟兄是誰。
13.After the funeral, Joe and Bob revealed a secret which they had kept for over fifty years.葬禮之后，喬和鮑勃透露了他們保守了長達50多年的秘密。
which引導定語從句，說明是“何種秘密"。
14.Eric had been the eldest son of the family, very much older than his two brothers.埃里克是這家長子。年齡比他兩個弟弟大很多。
very much older than his two brothers在句中充當比較狀語。
15.He had been obliged to join the army during the Second World War.第二次世界大戰期間被迫參軍。
during the Second World War作時間狀語，交代"在什么時候"。
16.As he hated army life, he decided to desert his regiment.他討厭軍旅生活，決定逃離所在部隊。
as引導原因狀語從句，說明從部隊“逃跑"的原因。
17.When he learnt that he would be sent abroad, he returned to the farm and his father hid him until the end of the war.當他了解自己將被派遣出國時，他逃回農場，父親把他藏了起來，直到戰爭結束。
when引導時間狀語從句。That引導賓語從句，交代learnt的內容。
