I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. share the understanding of sportsmanship through speaking and writing;
2. plan and organize an essay about sportsmanship;
3. help partners to do peer review actively.

Improve the ability to express oneself in oral English and write an essay about sportsmanship.

Grasp the structure of an essay and its rationality and logic.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Reviewing
1. T discusses the following questions with Ss to form the understanding of the Olympic Games.
Q1: What’s the Olympic motto
Q2: What do the Olympics provide for the athletes
Q3: What do the Olympic Games bring to people across the world
Suggested answers:
Q1: Faster, Higher, Stronger.
Q2: An opportunity for them to play fairly, exchange, learn from each other, as well as realize the dream of champion.
Q3: Joy, excitement, faith in the future and hope.
2. Fill in the table to understand sportsmanship through the examples of excellent athletes.

3. Use a mind map to help to discuss different aspects of sportsmanship and think of supporting examples.
Then T gives a tip to make the task clearer and offers an example to make it easier:
T: When you try to explain an idea, the person you are speaking to may fail to understand you. In this case, try to repeat or paraphrase what you have said, or give examples.
e.g. When I say …, I actually mean …
Take … as an example.

Step 2 Writing
1. T discusses some questions before writing to make Ss know what to write and how to write it.
Q1: What topic are you going to write about (Sportsmanship)
Q2: What do you know about sportsmanship
Q3: How do you organize your essay (A clear topic representation, a detailed body and supporting examples, a summary)
Q4: How to conclude what you have written and introduce what you will write next (Transitional statements)
e.g. In conclusion/To sum up/In short, every athlete wants to be a victor, but I still hold the belief that …
Though winning is very important in sport, I believe that …
2. T shows the following on the screen.
Writing structure and requirements:
Para. 1: Introduce the topic of sportsmanship and state the main idea of your essay. Remember to take a clear stand on sportsmanship.
Para. 2: Develop the body of your essay by giving your understanding of sportsmanship in detail. Use examples to support your opinion where necessary. You can also include an opposing opinion and state why you disagree.
Para. 3: Sum up your opinion by reminding the reader of what you have written. Rather than repeating the exact words, express your main idea in a different way.
3. T asks Ss to write an essay in class.
After the discussion and guidance above, T gives Ss some time (15 minutes or so) to write an essay. T goes around to offer help.

Step 3 After-writing
1. T asks Ss to do self-review to ensure that the essays can meet the demands or can be improved.
Self-review questions:
Do you use transitional statements in your writing
How can you improve your writing
2. T presents the following criteria on the screen and asks Ss to check drafts between partners.
Punctuation
Spelling
Grammar
Choice of words
Style (formal/informal)
Structure
3. T randomly selects 1 or 2 essays to guide Ss. The following aspects should be paid attention to:
basic mistakes (spelling, punctuation, words, grammar)
merits and demerits after peer review (reasons)
discussion about whether the opinions on sportsmanship are good
some persuasive sentences
