Step 1 Lead-in
T leads Ss to talk about mass media by answering some questions.
T: With the development of various media, people have easy access to news. Where do people usually get news
S: Print media, broadcast media and online media.
T: Have you ever read China Daily
S: Yes. It has both print editions and digital editions.
T: Have you heard of “今日頭條”?What do you know about it
S: Yes. It’s a news app, with a total membership of over 700 million in China. It is very popular now.
T: Right. Technology has changed the way people get news during the past years.

Step 2 Reading
Reading a chart
T shows Ss a chart and asks a question.
T: Here is a chart about the changes of the news media over the past 15 years. What information can you get from the chart
(Sample answer: Over the past 15 years, online media has become increasingly popular, while the number of people who use broadcast media has decreased slightly, and the number of people who use print media has been in sharp decline.)

2. Reading paragraphs 1-2
T asks Ss to read the the first two paragraphs and answer a question.
T: From the chart above we can see online media has become increasingly popular. How has online news media developed over time Let’s read an article --- The rise of online news media. Please read the first two paragraphs and find the answer.
The past decades have witnessed the rapid development of online news media.
In the mid-1990s Newspapers began to publish digital editions on the Internet.
By the end of1999 Many newspapers in China had set up their online news platforms.
Around the end of 1999 News websites with no print editions sprang up.
Then We entered the smartphone era.

3. Reading paragraph 3
T asks Ss to read the third paragraph and answer some questions.
T: Now let’s read the third paragraph. What’s it about
S: It draws a conclusion from the chart.
T: What conclusion does the author draw Please rewrite it within 30 words.
S: Technology enables people to get news in various ways, making reading news more personal and comprehensive than before. Online news media may keep rising due to its edge over others.
T: What do you think of the conclusion Why
S: It’s acceptable because it is based on solid facts and convincing figures.
T: Good. Can you find any facts to show the variety and accessibility of online news media
S: Sure. For example, in paragraph 1 the author mentions that there are a wider range of stories and almost instant updates of news events. Besides, from paragraph 2 we know smartphone owners can check the latest news any time at any place.

4. Post-reading
T gets Ss to discuss the following questions and give possible answers.
T: According to the article, why do you think online media becomes popular
S: Because of its variety, accessibility and interaction.
T: As the author concludes, the rapid rise of online news media is unlikely to stop. Do you think the print media will disappear in the future Why or why not
(various answers are possible.)

Step 3 Listening
1. Pre-listening
T encourages Ss to make a prediction before listening to the interview.
T: We have talked about the reasons for the popularity of online news media and its future. Now let’s listen to the opinions of Miss Smith,a mass media expert. Simon is interviewing her. You are required to listen to the interview and finish the exercises. Before you listen, please go through the sentences of B1and predict what aspects will be mentioned in the interview.
S: The first sentence is about the updates of print media and broadcast media. The Second sentence is about the interaction of online media. The third sentence is about the convenience of online media. The last sentence is about people’ trust in news media.
T: Exactly. What is B2 about
S: Miss Smith’s opinion on online news media, including reasons for its popularity and its future.
T: Well done. How can you find the topics so quickly
S: Go through the title and subtitles.
T: Quite right. It’s a good way to get the main idea and know what to do.

2. While-listening
(1) T asks Ss to listen to the interview for the first time and finish the exercise of B1.
T: Please listen to the interview and fill in the blanks of B1. After that, we will check the answers.
T: Now we have got the right answers. From the sentences of B1, what can we infer about online news media
S: Online news media has advantages as well as disadvantages. Some people think online news media provides updates, interaction and convenience while some consider it less trustworthy than print news media.
T: Terrific.
(2) T asks Ss to listen to the interview again and finish the exercise of B2.
T: Why is online news media popular What is its future like Let’s listen to the interview again and complete the notes of B2.

3. Post-listening
T helps Ss to summarize the useful listening strategies they employed while listening.
T: Boys and girls, before listening to an interview, we can predict its topic and relevant points according to the given materials. What are they talking about For example, during this interview, Miss Smith shows her opinion on online news media, including its advantage, future and reasons for the popularity. When we listen, we should pay more attention to the interviewee’s opinions and supporting statements, such as figures, facts,etc.

Step 4 Summary
T asks Ss to make a summary of online news media.
