1. know about the strategy of reading a TV show transcript;
2. understand the pollution in Norgate;
3. analyse the environmental problems around the world and find out some ways to cope with them;
4. write a short passage about what the world will be like 20 years from now.

1. Analyse the causes of the problem and find more solutions to protect the environment.

1. Summarize the points of view of four speakers in the TV show.

IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Brainstorming
T shows Ss some pictures about pollution and ask them the following questions.
What can you see from the pictures
What do you think of them

Step 2 Prediction
1. T guides Ss to predict from the title and the picture and brainstorm the pollution in Norgate.
T: Can you predict what will be talked about in the TV show
T asks Ss to scan the first paragraph and predict what opinions James Smith, Vincent Brown and Julie Archer will hold.
T: How many people are there in the TV show and who are they Can you guess what opinions they will hold

Step 3 Detailed reading
1. Read the third paragraph and answer the following questions.
What are the environmental problems in Norgate

What do the factories do to protect the environment
What benefits have the factories brought to Norgate
3. Read the seventh paragraph and answer the following questions.
What does the committee do for protecting the environment in Norgate
What else should be done to protect the environment according to Julie Archer
4. Read the last paragraph and answer the following question.
What is the host’s attitude towards the situation in Norgate
5. T asks Ss to summarize the main viewpoints of the host and three guests.
(1) T asks Ss to summarize the main viewpoints of James Smith.
Norgate has become seriously polluted over the past 20 years.
Factories have caused water and air pollution and endangered public health.
Heavy industry should be moved out of Norgate.
(2) T asks Ss to summarize the main viewpoints of Vincent Brown.
Factory managers care deeply about the environment and the community.
Factories have taken various measures to reduce pollution, even though these measures raise their production costs.
Factories have helped Norgate’s economy and created job opportunities for local residents.
(3) T asks Ss to summarize the main viewpoints of Julie Archer.
The committee plays a major role in controlling pollution, but also has a duty to promote economic growth.
Different branches of government work together to ensure that development strategies can be followed in an environmentally friendly way.
Everyone should do their part to protect the environment.
(4) T asks Ss to summarize the main viewpoints of the host.
Norgate’s fast development has brought increased pollution levels and greatly damaged the environment.
The fortunes of our environment and our economy are inseparable.
We should build a better future and a cleaner world for our children.

1. T asks Ss to think about the following question and have a group discussion.

(1) T asks Ss to think about the causes, consequences and control of the environment problems in Norgate.

Consequences of the environmental problems in Norgate: Dirty and smelly river, smog in the air, harm to the health of the local people
Control of the environmental problems in Norgate: Use of new technologies to reduce pollution, make environmental policies for business to follow, work hand in hand with other branches of government, follow the golden rule of reduce, reuse and recycle
(2) T asks Ss to think about the environmental problems around the world and have a discussion in groups.
