I. Learning objectives
By the end of the period, students will be able to:
1. know about the strategy of reading a TV show transcript;
2. understand the pollution in Norgate;
3. analyse the environmental problems around the world and find out some ways to cope with them;
4. write a short passage about what the world will be like 20 years from now.
II. Key competence focus
1. Analyse the causes of the problem and find more solutions to protect the environment.
2. Develop a deep understanding of protecting the environment.

1. Summarize the points of view of four speakers in the TV show.
2. Find out more solutions to protecting the environment.

IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Brainstorming
T shows Ss some pictures about pollution and ask them the following questions.
What can you see from the pictures
What do you think of them

Step 2 Prediction
1. T guides Ss to predict from the title and the picture and brainstorm the pollution in Norgate.
T: Can you predict what will be talked about in the TV show
T asks Ss to scan the first paragraph and predict what opinions James Smith, Vincent Brown and Julie Archer will hold.
T: How many people are there in the TV show and who are they Can you guess what opinions they will hold

Step 3 Detailed reading
1. Read the third paragraph and answer the following questions.
What are the environmental problems in Norgate
What does James Smith think should be done to solve the problem
2. Read the fifth paragraph and answer the following questions.
How does Vincent Brown respond to the protest of James Smith
What do the factories do to protect the environment
What benefits have the factories brought to Norgate
3. Read the seventh paragraph and answer the following questions.
What does the committee do for protecting the environment in Norgate
What else should be done to protect the environment according to Julie Archer
4. Read the last paragraph and answer the following question.
What is the host’s attitude towards the situation in Norgate
5. T asks Ss to summarize the main viewpoints of the host and three guests.
(1) T asks Ss to summarize the main viewpoints of James Smith.
Norgate has become seriously polluted over the past 20 years.
Factories have caused water and air pollution and endangered public health.
Heavy industry should be moved out of Norgate.
(2) T asks Ss to summarize the main viewpoints of Vincent Brown.
Factory managers care deeply about the environment and the community.
Factories have taken various measures to reduce pollution, even though these measures raise their production costs.
Factories have helped Norgate’s economy and created job opportunities for local residents.
(3) T asks Ss to summarize the main viewpoints of Julie Archer.
The committee plays a major role in controlling pollution, but also has a duty to promote economic growth.
Different branches of government work together to ensure that development strategies can be followed in an environmentally friendly way.
Everyone should do their part to protect the environment.
(4) T asks Ss to summarize the main viewpoints of the host.
Norgate’s fast development has brought increased pollution levels and greatly damaged the environment.
The fortunes of our environment and our economy are inseparable.
We should build a better future and a cleaner world for our children.
【設計意圖：首先引導學生找出Norgate所存在的環境問題，并找出嘉賓們為環境保護所做的事情，然后指導學生找出嘉賓和主持人所持的觀點。該環節引導學生進行獲取、概括、整合等思維訓練活動，培養學生查找和處理信息的能力。】
Step 4 Critical thinking
1. T asks Ss to think about the following question and have a group discussion.
Though the factories and the committee have done much to protect the local environment, there is still serious pollution in Norgate. Who should be responsible for this
2. T asks Ss to think about the environmental problems in Norgate and around the world.
(1) T asks Ss to think about the causes, consequences and control of the environment problems in Norgate.
Causes of the environmental problems in Norgate: Heavy industry factories’ moving in
Consequences of the environmental problems in Norgate: Dirty and smelly river, smog in the air, harm to the health of the local people
Control of the environmental problems in Norgate: Use of new technologies to reduce pollution, make environmental policies for business to follow, work hand in hand with other branches of government, follow the golden rule of reduce, reuse and recycle
(2) T asks Ss to think about the environmental problems around the world and have a discussion in groups.

【設計意圖：在學生發現自己先前的預判與原文的異同時，教師即可順理成章地引導學生思考一個問題：既然工廠和政府都說為保護環境做了很多努力，為何Norgate還會有這么日益嚴重的環境問題呢？由此順利引導到下一步，從Norgate現有環境問題上升到全球環境問題，讓學生進一步思考污染的主要來源有哪些，導致了什么結果，還有哪些措施可以保護環境。通過讓學生深入思考及討論以上問題，培養其批判性思維以及合作精神。】
Step 5 Further thinking
1. T guides Ss to reflect on the following question:
Do you think things will change significantly in the future
2. T asks Ss to think about what the world will be like 20 years from now and have a group discussion. T asks them to organize their ideas with a mind map and offers a sample for their reference.
Nature: Animals, plants, air, water, mountains
Human beings: Awareness, behaviours
3. T asks some of them to share their ideas.
【設計意圖：讓學生通過小組合作，結合第四步的措施，思考在這些措施下，未來世界會變成什么樣，形成一張20年后世界會怎樣的思維導圖。為了讓學生的思路更清晰，將思維導圖分為人與自然兩個部分，讓學生暢想人與自然和諧相處的美好場景，也能讓學生自覺從自己做起，保護自然。】
