It was 8:00 am, and Amy pulled up her car beside a quiet park. While her kids, the student movie-makers, jumped out of the car and started unloading equipment to make a film in the park, she sat in the driver’s seat, reading a book.
She suddenly felt a little sad. These kids used to need a parent’s advice, help and caring. Now, as older teenagers, they were making their own decisions. She was just their driver. Anything else that she might be able to give to them was unwelcome and not required.
Emptied of its movie-related contents, the car only had bags of snacks and water and some personal items left. Amy’s job, as the driver, was to stay within calling distance with the keys so that if anything was needed she could open the car. Amy got out of the car, looking around for a place to sit down to finish reading her book in the fresh air.
It was early, but the sun was already beating down, and Amy didn’t want to sit in the heat. She found a park bench against a wall, in the shade. She noticed that a man was sitting on one end, but there was plenty of room for at least two more people.
When she was slowly walking in the man’s direction, the man noticed her. He thought she probably was just having a walk around and wouldn’t come to sit by him. He had just spent the night on the bench. Besides dirty clothes and hair, he had a smell of body sweat. He knew he was an unwelcome person. Usually, people wouldn’t even look at him, let alone sit by him.
“What if the lady asks me to leave and sits here by herself ” the man wondered. It was a hot day, and it wasn’t easy for him to find another place to sit out of the sun. Moreover, he hadn’t eaten any food for so long that he didn’t have much strength to move around.
