Sailor Boy
It was almost six months since Mark and his parents moved here, but he still didn't make any friends except Isabella, his neighbour. By far, the most embarrassing moment was when Mr Larkin introduced him to the class and explained he had previously lived on a houseboat, J. T. immediately nicknamed him“Sailor Boy” Mark remembered how he felt every time J. T. and his buddies passed him and said, “Here comes Sailor Boy!”
One night, Mark was sitting in his favourite place - on the roof - looking at the stars, which always provided him with a temporary distraction from his new life on land. As usual, in his hand was a long piece of rope with which he would ti e the most delicate all purpose sailor knots
A loud“pssst” broke the silence – it was Isabella. “The environmental club is going camping next week. Since you know more about nature than anyone I know, I signed you up.” She announced delightfully.
“Isabella—,” he had just spoken when Isabella gave him a friendly nudge, “It won't be so bad.You can make more friends and most importantly, they’ ll get to know you and see what a great guy you are.”
Then the day of the camp-out arrived. Mr Larkin asked the kids to put up the tent and get their sleeping bags ready. They were divided into groups of four and Mark was assigned to J. T. and his two buddies, Ethan and Jacob.
“You’ ve got to be kidding me,” Mark mumbled, grabbed his backpack and walked towards them. How he wished he were back on the water, not on land!
“Oh no!” Mark's thoughts were interrupted by a loud cry from J. T., - I forgot to pack my sleeping bag! “It's not cold out,” Jacob said. “Just sleep on the ground.”“That doesn't sound comfortable,”Ethan said. J. T. looked to be near tears.
“Um, I have an idea,” Mark suggested. J. T., Jacob and Ethan turned toward Mark who was pulling a long piece of rope out of his backpack. “Do we have any extra rope ”
After helping Mark gather the rope he needed, the three watched in awe as Mark wove the rope to produce a series of thick knots.
