The Sisters
Lynn sighed as she struggled to remove a spot on her new T-shirt. She was feeling quite annoyed. Her sister, Ava, had completely ruined her nice Saturday morning.
Couldn’t a super-busy teenage girl get some rest from a continuously-working week Okay, maybe Lynn had pushed Ava onto the table, spilling (灑出來) juice all over floor. Maybe her mom had blamed Ava for what happened and didn’t give Ava time to explain. Ava, punished without reason, was in a stormy mood. To take revenge (報復) on Lynn, she “accidentally” spilled a bowl of jelly onto Lynn, ruining Lynn’s new T-shirt. But Lynn was sure Ava got what she deserved. Just last week, Ava had secretly poured sticky glue on Lynn’s seat in class. Lynn couldn’t have been happier to see her sister suffer.
This chain of revenge had been going on between the two girls ever since there had been too much school stress (endless homework, mountainous tests, and many more) in eighth grade. And then their mom was always on her phone and taking business trips, hardly having time to stay with her family.
As Lynn thought about all this, she couldn’t help feeling a bit thoughtful and nostalgic (懷舊的), remembering the time when she and her sister were peaceful, particularly during their childhood game —Conquer the World. It didn’t actually mean to conquer the world; instead, it was their playful challenge to climb a pretty steep and high rock at the back of their house. And when they got to the top, they would have “conquered the world”. The sisters hadn’t actually managed to do that yet. They stopped trying to after a while since it looked a bit stupid for teenagers to climb a rock.
Lynn sighed and gave up trying to clean the jelly on her shirt. Perhaps…it was time to stop having a world war with her sister. She got up and changed into a new shirt.
