Summer vacation just began. Steve and Paul had set their hearts on practicing baseball daily to make the freshman team. Steve grabbed his bat and glove, shouting a quick goodbye to his mom before rushing out, the door slamming behind him. Paul was already waiting, looking a little worried.
“What’s wrong Forgot your stuff ” Steve inquired. Paul shook his head, explaining that he had to help Mr Thimpson, whose broken arm prevented him cleaning his garage. Paul sighed, “Mr Thimpson is old and needs help.” Understanding the situation, Steve offered to lend a hand. Together, they headed to the Thimpson’s.
Soon the boys arrived and got started. They found a couple of brooms and shovels (鏟). Before they swept, they put boxes that scattered around the garage floor on shelves. As Paul put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it falling an envelope. His eyes widened when he found a large sum of money in it.
“You’ve got to see this,” Paul pulled out a handful of bills and showed it to Steve. “Perhaps we can ask Mr Thimpson for tips,” Paul said.
“We can’t!” Steve insisted firmly. He grabbed the money from Paul’s hand and stuffed it back in the envelope. “Knock it off. You’re better than that,” Steve said and put the envelope back on the shelf. “Come on. Let’s get done and go to the park.”
Just then, Mr Thimpson walked into the garage, surprising them. He came to invite the boys to taste the chocolate that Mrs Thimpson had just baked. “Ugh... Sure, Mr Thimpson,” said Paul. “Let us finish up and we’ll be right in.”
After Mr Thimpson left, Paul admitted his moment of embarrassment and regret. “I don’t know what got into me. The Thimpsons are always trying to pay me for the work I do. My mom won’t let me take money from them, since she thinks they don’t have that much. But, Mrs Thimpson is always making me cakes and cookies, and she has knitted (編織) five sweaters for me.”

第一段
The boys finally finished cleaning the garage and then went into the house. As they sat around the table, savoring the rich chocolate, Paul fidgeted uneasily in his seat. His eyes constantly darted around, avoiding Mr. and Mrs. Thimpson's gaze. Mr. Thimpson, completely unaware of the inner turmoil, recounted his glorious baseball memories with great enthusiasm, his hands gesturing wildly. Steve, sensing Paul's discomfort, jumped in with a hilarious story about a baseball game where the pitcher threw the ball in the wrong direction. He mimicked the pitcher's confused expression, making everyone laugh, except Paul, who managed a weak smile. Paul's mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, constantly replaying his moment of weakness. He stole glances at the Thimpsons, filled with self - reproach.
第二段
As they finished the cake and were about to leave, Mrs. Thimpson handed Paul a beautifully wrapped package. Paul's eyes lit up in surprise, and his hands trembled slightly as he took it. He carefully unwrapped the package, his breath catching in his throat when he saw the brand - new baseball glove. “We know you've been working so hard on baseball. This is just a small token of our gratitude,” Mrs. Thimpson said, her eyes twinkling with kindness. Paul's face flushed with a mix of embarrassment and gratitude. He stammered out his thanks, his voice thick with emotion. On the way to the park, Paul turned to Steve and said, “I'll never forget this. I'm so glad you stopped me.” They arrived at the park, and with the new glove on, Paul took a powerful swing, the sound of the bat hitting the ball echoing through the air, a symbol of his new - found resolve.

第一段
The boys finally finished cleaning the garage and then went into the house. Once seated, Paul was like a cat on a hot tin roof. He picked at the chocolate, barely tasting it. Mr. Thimpson was in high spirits, sharing stories of his old baseball team, his face beaming with pride. Steve, trying his best to ease the tension, started talking about a crazy baseball match where a fan ran onto the field. He animatedly described the chaos, making Mr. Thimpson laugh heartily. But Paul was lost in his own thoughts, berating himself for his earlier lapse in judgment. He stole a look at the kind - faced Thimpsons, feeling a lump form in his throat. He knew he had to make things right.
第二段
As they finished the cake and were about to leave, Mrs. Thimpson handed Paul a beautifully wrapped package. Paul's eyes widened in disbelief. He slowly opened it, and when he saw the baseball glove, his eyes welled up with tears. “This is for you, dear. We hope it helps you in your baseball journey,” Mrs. Thimpson said gently. Paul was overcome with emotion. He thanked her profusely, his voice breaking. On their way to the park, Paul said to Steve, “I feel so ashamed of what I thought. But this gift... it's like a second chance.” When they reached the park, Paul put on the glove and threw a ball high into the sky, watching it soar, a symbol of his new - found understanding of kindness and integrity.
【答案】范文
The boys finally finished cleaning the garage and then went into the house. The air was filled with the warm, comforting smell of freshly baked chocolate cake. Steve and Paul sat down at the dining table, their minds still on the money they had found but not mentioned to Mr. Thimpson. They both felt a sense of relief as they enjoyed the delicious cake, trying to forget the unsettling discovery.
As they finished the cake and were about to leave, Mrs. Thimpson handed Paul a beautifully wrapped package. Paul’s eyes lit up with curiosity and gratitude. “Thank you, Mrs. Thimpson,” he said, eagerly tearing open the package to find a handmade sweater, perfectly knitted to his size. “This is amazing! You shouldn’t have,” Paul added, feeling a mix of embarrassment and appreciation. Mrs. Thimpson smiled warmly, “Paul, you’re like part of our family. We just want to show our appreciation for all the help you give us.” Steve watched his friend, realizing that sometimes, the best rewards aren’t always monetary. Sometimes friendship is more valuable than money.
