The Hottest Peppers in the World
The title of “hottest pepper (辣椒) in the world” is something that’s challenged more often than you may expect. Every year hot pepper cultivators (耕種者) find new ways to create peppers that will compete for the top position. Below we list the present hottest peppers based on expected median heat on the Scoville Scale (史高維爾指標,辣椒辣度的測量單位).
Pepper X
Pepper X was planted by the PuckerButt Pepper Company in the US. Measured at its max at 3.18 million Scoville Hcat Units (SHU), and officially measured at 2.69 million SHU in the Guinness Book of World Records, Pepper X truly outshines the previous record holder, the Carolina Reaper.
Carolina Reaper
The Carolina Rcaper, also developed by the PuckerButt Pepper Company, hold the title of the world’s hottest pepper in the Guinness Book of World Records from 2013 to 2021. The pepper’s heat level reaches an average of 1.6 million SHU, with some individual peppers recorded at over 2.2 million SHU.
Komodo Dragon
The Komodo Dragon pepper is a fiery chili hailing from the UK. It’s renowned for its extreme heat between 1.4 million to 2.2 million SHU. The heat of the Komodo Dragon pepper is not immediate but builds up for 10 seconds before it unleashes its full potential.
Trinidad Moruga Scorpion
The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion originates (起源于) from island country Trinidad and Tobago. Its heat measures from 1.2 to 2 million SHU. And it looks strange, with its scorpion (蝎子) -like stinger (刺) tail. This fiery pepper was even recognized as the world’s hottest pepper by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2012.
7 Pot Douglah
The 7 Pot Douglah also originates from Trinidad and Tobago, ranging from 923,889 to 1,853,986 SHU. The pepper gets its name from the local belief and fact that one pod (豆莢) is enough to cook seven pots of stew (菜肴). Its dark brown color gives it a unique appearance among chili peppers.

Grady Ferranti, a middle school student from La Porte, Texas, wanted to play in the coming Youth World Series Baseball Tournaments (聯賽) with his teammates. Their team would be travelling to Dallas and to College Station to compete.
However, Grady’s family was too poor to send him. But the tournaments were an experience the young man didn’t want to miss out on. “It was hard for me to stay in sports,” Grady said. “It made me feel kind of sad, but I didn’t lose hope.”
The 13-year-old and his father discussed ways that he could raise some money to attend. Then they decided to make tamales, a kind of local snack. Grady brought them and a big cooler of iced waters to the crossing of Spencer and Underwood with a sign which read: “Water S1.00 a Bottle for World Series Baseball.”
A teammate’s mother heard about what Grady was doing and stopped by to bring him a few extra boxes of water. A person who passed by noticed the teen selling waters and tamales to play baseball. He shared a photo of Grady online, and it got a lot of attention. “This boy is selling water to go to World Series Baseball! Go Grady Ferranti! Corner of Spencer and Underwood ...” the post read.
Many in Grady’s community saw the post and drove over to the street corner, and bought everything that he had to sell. Many encouraged him. “You are doing a really good job. You are going places,” one customer told him. A teacher of Grady’s also showed up to support his student.
Grady ended up raising enough money to enter the baseball tournaments with his teammates, and had some extra money to get some new pieces of baseball gear (裝備). Grady felt that he had succeeded with the help of his community. “Having them at my back makes me feel good,” said Grady.

The messages always start with something like, “Hey, I’m so sorry but...” Something has suddenly come up—a terrible headache or a pet cat having a problem. The person I have made plans with isn’t going to make it. At this point I’m usually dressed, about to walk out the door, or even on my way. However, I usually don’t care about it. I have to cancel (取消) plans sometimes, too.
But over the past year, my friends and I have started to realize that people are flaking out more often. When people flake out—cancel the plan at the last minute or simply don’t show, the first question that appears in our brain is “Why ” or “Is something bigger really happening ”
Think of that person in your friend group who always can’t arrive on time. That may be more common among some personality types. For these people, they seem to have little concern for how other people feel. Another type is what psychologists (心理學家) call conscientiousness or responsibility. People who have no conscientiousness are bad at planning things or don’t follow through—in other words, flake out.
Flaking out has got more common in the last decade. Research shows it’s just easier to flake out in the age of technology. Distance can allow people to lie to others. When you don’t want to follow the plan, it’s easier to send a message to someone to cancel the plan than to tell them over the phone. Being flaked out on in this way can make you feel that they are treating you as if you didn’t have thoughts or feelings. So next time someone flakes out by sending you a text message, you can turn to Gray, a psychology professor at the University of North Carolina, who has something to share with you to help you deal with the situation.
28. Why does the author take no notice when others cancel the plan
A. They have made apologies.
B. It doesn’t have any bad influences.
C. Sometimes he has to do the same thing.
D. The plan isn’t important and can be changed.
29. What is an example of flaking out according to the text
A. Sending a message to say sorry.
B. Cancelling a plan with an excuse.
C. Being late for a party on purpose.
D. Dealing with other important things.
30. Which of the following can best describe the people who flake out
A. Busy and active. B. Lazy and dishonest.
C. Careless and impatient. D. Irresponsible and self-centred.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. The Influence of Flaking Out B. How to Prevent Cancelling Plans
C. The Reasons for Flaking Out D. How to Get Along with Others
D
If you sit at a beach and look at the stars, you can see the sky suddenly light up and then the water in the sea turn a beautiful, electric blue! What you are seeing is a natural phenomenon (現象) known as bioluminescence (生物發光). Bioluminescence is the natural production of light by some animals. Trying to catch this phenomenon has in fact become a tourist attraction in places like New Zealand.
Bioluminescence is produced by specific species of fish, squid, jellyfish, as well as fireflies. The light is caused by a chemical reaction (化學反應) within an animal’s body. Animals can choose the brightness and the color of the light depending on whether they are running away from those trying to eat them, attracting a possible mate, or looking for food. The colors are usually a bright blue or green—this is because colors that have shorter wavelengths (波長) such as blue and green travel easily through the water.
In the waters off the coast of New Zealand, plankton (浮游生物) produces neon-blue when it notices the coming of smaller fish that eat it. Its light causes the waves to shine, the water to flash, and the fish to swim away as they swim through the ocean.
It is important to research before visiting as bioluminescence cannot always be seen. The animals have a built-in sense of time that allows them to only shine in darkness. Also, wet weather increases the chance of bioluminescence taking place, as the water from the cloud provides something that makes bioluminescence to appear. On the other hand, too much wind can cause the animals to swim down deeper into water and swim away in different directions.
Bioluminescent waves are truly one of the most unique and beautiful sights to see. They help us remember that there are many kinds of animals living on our planet and that we should protect them for future generations.
32. How will people probably feel when seeing bioluminescence in New Zealand
A. Frightened. B. Amazed. C. Confused. D. Encouraged.
33. What do we know about bioluminescence
A. Animals produce different colors of light in different situations.
B. The colors with longer wavelengths move faster in the ocean.
C. It was first noticed by travelers in places like New Zealand.
D. Plankton produces neon-blue when it searches for food.
34. When can visitors have a better chance of seeing bioluminescence
A. On a windy morning. B. On a rainy morning. C. On a windy night. D. On a rainy night.
35. What is the writing purpose of the text
A. To attract more visitors to New Zealand.
B. To introduce sea animals in New Zealand.
C. To call on us to protect rare sea animals.
D. To explain a unique natural phenomenon.

John was a shy child and often found himself alone at school. He used to suffer a lot. He rarely discussed anything in and after class or interacted with his teachers. It seemed that he preferred to stay in his own world. However, his classmates didn’t understand his quietness or interests and often didn’t invite him to take part in activities on purpose. In reality, however, John felt very lonely and was eager to connect with others, but didn’t know how to break down the barriers (障礙). He was dying to turn to someone for help.
Sadly, John’s parents were too busy with daily chores (家務) to notice the change in him as he became quieter and more distant. Even when John gathered his courage to share his feelings, he was simply comforted by words like, “Go and get it. We know you can do it.”
However, John was totally confused about how to pull himself out of this current situation. Sometimes, at home, he had no choice but to play his favorite jigsaw (拼圖) in silence and avoid interacting with his parents. Gradually, he began to wonder if he was doing something wrong or if he really wasn’t good at making friends. He felt sad and started not to communicate with others.
Luckily, John’s English teacher noticed his trouble and decided to step in to help. The teacher organized a class project after a math test, which seemed quite challenging for most students, but not for John. The teacher required the students to work together in groups to solve the problems and then he would invite someone to present their critical ideas on behalf of (代表) the group. The teacher then intentionally (故意地) placed John in a group that was likely to give him confidence and encouraged him to show his strengths.

Dear Tom,
I’m more than excited to hear from you! Since stepping into high school this semester, remarkable changes have happened to me. Now I can’t wait to share my changes and harvests with you.
To start with, I’ve learned to manage time wisely, so I am less anxious and stressed about balancing my study and extra-curricular activities. Besides, with the help of my teachers and friends, I have developed good exercise habits. Now I enjoy working out regularly, like jogging and ropes skipping, which makes me physically and mentally healthier. As for the coming winter vacation, not only am I planning to do some sports and visit local museums with my friends, but also I am scheduled to read more interesting books to broaden my horizons.
How about your new school life Looking forward to your sharing!
Yours,
Li Hua

參考范文:
At first, John hesitated, unsure of how to help. Nervous but excited, he was afraid of expressing his ideas. However, as the group began discussing the project, he found himself knowing how to solve the problems that others struggled with. Then bravely he talked with group members and his ideas were valuable to the team. Gradually, his classmates started to take notice of his talents and began asking for his ideas. Seeing the joyful expressions on his classmates’ faces, John started to feel less lonely and a wave of confidence swept over him.
At the end of the project, John formed new connections with his classmates. They invited him to join more group activities, and he no longer felt so distant. Instead, he became more outgoing and started participating actively in class. This newfound sense of belonging and encouragement gave him the confidence to open more. Finally, John realized that his journey from loneliness to friendship taught him the importance of taking the first step confidently. Sometimes, all it takes us is someone who supports and encourages you.

The library was first designed by Colin St. John Wilson, and opened its door to the public in 1997. As you can see, the size is large and the rooms below the ground have 746 kilometers of shelves. The total floor space is 112,000 square meters and it has 1,000 staff members in the building. It houses many important collections of books about every country, and those books cover almost 3,000 years. The library isn’t a public library and you can’t borrow any books, although most of those books are bought by the government.
