When John signed up to do a triathlon(鐵人三項(xiàng)) a couple of summers ago, he had one simple goal: not to finish in last place. After all, he was doing the triathlon with his 16yearold son, Zane. He didn't want him to see his dad as the final loser.
John was not much of an athlete. He was over 50 and found lungburning exercise deeply unpleasant. But that summer his wife urged him to get in shape, and his son came up with a surprising proposal: “Let's do a triathlon together, Dad!”
Since it was his son's idea, John felt he couldn't say no. What kind of message would that send So he searched online and found a triathlon a few weeks later in Massachusetts.
They had four weeks to train. Zane was in good shape from school sports teams. John did his best. He forced himself to run around the Central Park a few times and do some laps at the local Community Center.
They drove up the night before the race. When they wheeled their bikes to the base camp, John looked around and felt uneasy. So many sharply defined muscles. So many moisturewicking socks. So many packs of highcalorie energy gels(能量棒). These folks were prepared.
“Don't panic,” John told himself. “There have to be a few in the crowd even less prepared than I am.”
They lined up by the shore and dived into the cold water. Zane immediately pulled away with strong freestyle strokes. John caught his breath, turned to the breaststroke(蛙泳) after five minutes and eventually made it back to land. He was in the bottom half of the pack but holding his own.
John ran to his bike, put on his helmet and started cycling along the hilly backroad course. For the next halfhour, he could hear other bikers zooming by. After 12 miles, he wheeled his bike through the sensors. He'd dropped lower in the pack, but there were several racers behind him.

He felt the struggle as he pushed forward, his breathing labored. He refused to walk, even though walking would probably have been faster than his footdragging way of running. Sweating all over, he kept moving.
