When I was in second grade, I discovered my parents’ 600 Film Polaroid camera. Somehow,
there was still film inside of the camera and the camera worked! I spent that night taking pictures of
my family and our pet dog. The next day, I convinced my parents to let me take it to class and took
pictures of my friends. I instantly fell in love with capturing memories.
From then on, I would always ask my parents if I could borrow their digital camera during
family vacations. I loved taking pictures of everything in sight. When I saw the pictures, I was filled
with happiness from the moments I was able to record.
At high school, I took some photography courses furthering my curiosity for this art form. I
learned about editing and the wonders of Photoshop. I learned what a great tool it is and I tried my
best to practice as often as I could. When I was looking at universities, I was extremely interested in
art schools because of photography. I knew deep in my heart that I wanted to do something more
with photography. However, I also had a dream and passion to study business. I eventually decided
to attend a university where I had the opportunity to study both fields.
During my first year of college, I decided to pursue a photography minor. My love for Business
and Marketing helped me to turn my passion into a business. I created Angelica Carrete Photography
in 2016 as a way to do more with my hobby. I challenged myself to grow as a creative every day and
tried my best to stay motivated through the struggles that come with being a college student. I
created this blog as a way to express my thoughts on the many different aspects of photography and
to further challenge my creativity. I am so excited about this journey!

“That’s great,” said NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren, after he ate a piece of red lettuce that was
grown in a special box. “Tastes good,” agreed the U. S. astronaut Scott Kelly, who is spending one
year at the research station. “Kind of like arugula,” Scott added, then used small bottles to spread
extra virgin olive oil and vinegar on his leaf, much as one might spread mustard on a hot dog.
NASA says that if space explorers can grow their own food while they are away from the earth,
they would be more likely to survive the deep space exploration, which can last months or even
years. With no way to resupply a spacecraft making a long journey to and from Mars, the ability to
grow food during the trip will be key to survive. “For us, having the ability to grow our own food is a
big step in that direction, he said.
Ray Wheeler, NASA’s lead scientist for advanced life support activities at Kennedy Space
Center in Florida also said fresh foods such as tomatoes, blueberries and red lettuce could have a
positive impact on people’s moods and also could provide some protection against radiation in space.
The red romaine lettuce was grown in a special plant-growing box called a Veggie unit that
was built by Orbital Technologies Corporation in Madison, Wisconsin, and was flown to space
aboard the Space-X Dragon cargo ship. The seeds are contained in rooting pillows, which come
complete with soil and fertilizer.Since water cannot be poured in space, a special irrigation system
delivers moisture to the plant pillows from below.
The seeds were ”activated“ by Scott on July 8 and grew for 33 days. On Monday, Lindgren
used tongs to harvest the lettuce from its growing box, before attaching the leaves carefully to a tray.
He cleaned them and handed them, in a food-safe bag, to Scott and Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui.
They saved a couple of leaves for Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko and Gennady Padalka,
who were outside the station doing a spacewalk.
A previous crop of lettuce was grown in space last year but was not eaten by astronauts.
Instead, it underwent - and passed food safety tests back on earth.
28.How did Scott do with the space-grown lettuce
A.He cooked it in a special box. B.He ate it with a kind of arugula.
C.He put some mustard on it. D.He put the virgin olive oil on it.
29.The underlined words “that direction” in the second paragraph may refer to _________.
A.the journey to and from Mars B.the way to grow food
C.the building of research station D.the ability to fly in space
30.What Ray Wheeler said means _________.
A.the lettuce is a great step enabling human travel to Mars
B.humans are not able to arrive at Mars without the lettuce
C.tomatoes are obviously better than the blueberries in size
D.radiation would be reduced if people don’t eat some lettuce
31.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The significance of growing food in space for deep space exploration.
B.The challenges of resupplying a spacecraft during long space journeys to and from Mars.
C.The process of growing red romaine lettuce in a special plant-growing box in space.
D.The importance of food safely tests for crops grown in space.

Many cities in the United States could grow their own food locally, raising enough crops and
cattle to meet the needs of all residents. This is the finding of an interesting new modeling study
from Tufts University, which analyzed the potential for local food production in 378 areas across the
US and expected food production.
The researchers found that cities in the Northwest in the United States had the greatest
potential to raise their own food. Cities along the Eastern seaside and in the Southwest had the least
potential and would not be able to meet all their own needs of diet, even if every acre of agricultural
land was used for food production. This makes sense, as many of the cities are coastal and lack room
for agricultural spreading.
The study revealed that the United States have extra agricultural land for feeding the domestic
population. Currently, some land is used to raise export crops, but a focus on local food production
would start a conversation about how that land gets used. In the words of Peters, lead author and
associate professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts, “It would be
important to make sure policies for supporting local or regional food production benefit conservation
and create opportunities for farmers to adopt more sustainable (可持續(xù)的) practices. Policies should
also recognize the ability of the natural resources in a given local or region and consider the supply
chain, including ability for food processing and storage.”
Although it’s a far cry from the current reality, it is a nice thought to imagine cities surrounded
by food production operations that transport freshly harvested food to nearby homes, and then make
use of the leftover food to fertilize fields and generate heat for greenhouses.
32.Why do the cities along the Eastern seaside fail to provide enough food
A.Because citizens are unwilling to grow crops.
B.Because the methods of food production are wrong.
C.Because they don’t have enough land to grow crops.
D.Because their climate limits the agricultural production.
33.What will the focus on local food production lead to
A.More job opportunities for citizens.
B.Conversations with the local government.
C.A discussion on how to make use of land.
D.More specific policies about water resources.
34.What does the underlined phrase “a far cry from” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Closely related to. B.Very different from.
C.Exactly the same as. D.Slightly different from.
35.What is the best title of this text
A.The US Government Stops Wasting Food
B.Cities Learn to Grow Food From the Villages
C.Farmers Have More Chances to Be Employed
D.Many Cities in the US Can Grow Their Own Food

We’ve all been there—you’ve sent a message and it’s marked “read”, but you haven’t heard
anything back. What’s the deal While being left on read (已讀不回) can be confusing, it’s also
pretty common. 36 Here are a few tips.
Expect the best. Remind yourself that the person is probably just busy. Ask yourself if you
actually know their schedule. There could be some time commitments you aren’t aware of. Here are
a few other reasons for a delayed response. 37 They put their phone away to focus on
work or school. They accidentally forgot to reply. Maybe they thought about what they wanted to
say but didn’t actually text it.
Resist the temptation (誘惑) to double-text. 38 If you send a lot of follow-up texts,
it’ll be hard for them to keep up and they might get stressed. Leave them with just one text to catch
up on—the other person will probably appreciate your patience.
Read over your previous messages. See if there are any confusing texts that you need to
clarify. It’s okay if you review your message again and notice that it might have been a little
unclear—it happens! 39
40 Keep it out of sight and get some peace of mind. Don’t let it upset or confuse you.
If you get your mind off any notifications, you’ll be able to brainstorm new ways to spend your time.
A.Put your phone away.
B.Fix your attention closely on text responses.
C.Give them a little space so they have a chance to reply.
D.They want to give you a longer response but can’t right now.
E.Ask yourself why being left on “read” frustrates or confuses you.
F.You can keep the situation from bothering you until you hear back.
G.You might feel relieved when you find something that is easy to misread.
