Rotterdam in the Netherlands has turned an unused canal(運河)into a wave pool,but it took years to become a reality.
Edward van Dongen and Edwin van Viegen,two big surfers,had a dream in 2012 to create a place where they could always surf in Rotterdam and didn't have to travel to the North Sea, but not everyone liked their idea.Neighbors said that it would be too noisy.Five years later,the government finally gave them the green light.Now,12 years later,RiF010 opened in July 2024.
Man-made waves are not new.In fact,one of the earliest wave pools was built in Munich, Germany in 1929.People moved up and down in the pool where the waves were made by a large paddle(槳).The first wave pool in the US opened in Tempe,Arizona in 1969.
But wave pools are much higher tech today.Rotterdam's wave pool uses a real canal that was once used for shipping.To build it,they created a special underwater concrete(混凝土) basin that allowed the water to be safely emptied without destroying the historic quays(碼頭). After the water was emptied,a wave-making mechanism(機械裝置)was put in,and the basin was filled with clean water from the Rotte River.
The surfing mechanism was developed by Surf Loch,a California company,to mimic the way waves form in the ocean.This technology is powered by eight engines through wind power from the North Sea.
While the waves might not feel exactly like the ocean,they'll still be exciting.Surfers can sign up for one-hour sessions based on their skill level,with waves from 1.5 feet to 5 feet tall. RiF010 will have a beach house,a cafe,a restaurant,and a surf shop,just like a real beach.But this beach is in the heart of the city!

In 2024,we are seeing widespread public interest in AI that's largely down to the coming out of ChatGPT in November 2022 by OpenAI,an American AI research organization.Given that ChatGPT allows users to ask questions and get an answer within seconds,it can be a powerful tool.When it comes to the legal field,people are already using AI's functions to serve as a"free lawyer".
It sounds easy but,as we all know,dealing with people is not often simple.Working in business law,I often deal with difficult and complex situations for which AI is ill-equipped. Using AI to write agreements for buying and selling shares is a good example of this.If you're selling shares in your business,you're giving up some control,so it's really important to get everything exactly right.Lawyers have a lot of experience from past deals and can give good advice to both buyers and sellers.
That said,there is no doubt that AI can sometimes be a help and something we can take advantage of in the legal field.For example,AI experts from the University of Cambridge made an AI program called Luminance that can read legal documents and find any problem that needs to be fixed.
The danger lies in the misuse of AI,given that misleading results can be produced.
You might have heard of the case in the US last year where two New York lawyers and their legal company were fined after six legal cases,created by ChatGPT,were used in an airplane injury case.While the judge ruled that it was not wrong in itself to use AI,he said it was the responsibility of the users to "make sure their documents are correct".
As with most things in life,AI has good and bad points.Our work requires more than just knowledge of the law.We need to be able to understand people's feelings,make good judgments,and think critically to best serve our clients(客戶).As you build relationships with clients on a human level,you learn more about their lives and plans,both of which influence how,as lawyers,we can best serve the individual.

Rotterdam in the Netherlands has turned an unused canal(運河)into a wave pool,but it took years to become a reality.
Edward van Dongen and Edwin van Viegen,two big surfers,had a dream in 2012 to create a place where they could always surf in Rotterdam and didn't have to travel to the North Sea, but not everyone liked their idea.Neighbors said that it would be too noisy.Five years later,the government finally gave them the green light.Now,12 years later,RiF010 opened in July 2024.

That said,there is no doubt that AI can sometimes be a help and something we can take advantage of in the legal field.For example,AI experts from the University of Cambridge made an AI program called Luminance that can read legal documents and find any problem that needs to be fixed.
The danger lies in the misuse of AI,given that misleading results can be produced.

When the swim season began,my 11-year-old daughter,Elizabeth,and I cut a deal. She would go to practise three times a week,and I wouldn't make her compete in swim meets.

When the day for the T-shirt relay arrived,Elizabeth was nervous.She was chosen to swim the anchor leg(最后一棒).By the last leg,Elizabeth's team had built up a narrow lead.Then it was Elizabeth's turn to swim.
