Because he could not free his arm, he stayed there for five days and hoped that someone would find him. But when his water ran out, he knew that he would have to do something to save his own life. He was not ready to die that day. So he used his knife to cut off half his right arm. Then, with his left arm, he bandaged himself so that he would not lose too much blood. After that, he climbed down the mountain to find help.

be used to (doing) sth. 意為“習慣于（做）某事”，to 是介詞，后接
名詞/代詞/動名詞，可用于多種時態(tài)，be也可換成 get 和 become。
He is used to living in the city. 他習慣住在城市。

(1) be used to do sth. 意為“被用來做某事”。
Wood is used to make paper. 木材用來造紙。
(2) used to do sth. 意為“過去常常做某事（現(xiàn)在不做了）”；過去曾經(jīng)做某事。

mean 為動詞，意為“打算，意欲”，是及物動詞，表示一個人的言論或行為、某一標志或詞語的意思所指。
