From Scotland to Cornwall, an organic, regenerative collective of the UK farmers is looking to pair up with sustainable businesses that need access to land and tools. Pitch Up! was founded in 2021 by Tim May, of Kingsclere Estates farm in Hampshire. It offers land, resources and expertise to businesses with big ideas for sustainable projects — in other words, “no gear (設備), all the ideas”. The idea is to replicate nature’s “closed loop” system, with waste being reused to create a thriving circular farming community.
“Our goal is to have a diverse mix of enterprises all operating off the land — using each other’s by-products or waste, and sharing knowledge, equipment and experience,” says May. “Nature thrives on diversity; it also fuels economic resilience, helps create a closed-loop system, and builds stronger rural communities. As farmers, we have an abundance of land and natural resources, and we want to share those resources and bring more people on to the land.”
Pitch Up! has already helped to launch a handful of businesses. Balcaskie Estate covers 2,000 hectares of land in Fife, Scotland, and has hosted markets, a butchery, and pop ups by Scotland The Bread, an organisation that works to get more people eating better bread.
Rosie Jack, Balcaskie’s business development manager, says, “We know that there’s a real demand for rural land so our message is, ‘We have land, come and use it!’ We really do welcome approaches from businesses of all shapes and sizes.”
This year, the Pitch Up! farming collective is keen to hear from entrepreneurs who want to use pasture land, organic milk, oats and grain, animal hides, woad, wool and even hedgerows for foraging.

Scientists have found a trigger (誘因) for social learning in wild animals. An experiment on great tits (大山雀) has pinpointed a single factor — immigration — that can cause birds to pay close attention to others, leading them to rapidly adopt useful behaviors. The study, conducted by scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior (MPI-AB) in Germany, is the first to provide experimental support of a long-held assumption that immigrants should strategically use social learning.
By copying the behaviors of others, animals can potentially unlock resources. So Chimento, a postdoctoral researcher at the MPI-AB, wanted to know if there was an ingredient that would boost social learning, allowing animals to more efficiently realize its rewards.
Using an automated puzzle box system they developed, the team designed an experiment to test this immigration hypothesis. They created experimental social groups of wild-caught great tits. Each group was provided with a “tutor” which was trained to access food from a puzzle box by either pushing the door left or right, so that their flock mates learned to prefer using one solution over another.
Next came the immigration event. Right-pushing birds were transferred into aviaries where resident birds were using the left-hand solution, and vice versa (反之亦然). Not only did immigrants see that residents were opening the puzzle box in a new way, but in some groups, the newcomers also discovered that residents scored a superior reward by doing so.
What’s important is that the immigrants were blind to the fact that the food reward had changed. Immigrants could only know something changed by either watching the residents use the puzzle, or by trying the other side themselves.
“In nature, animals are often moving from one environment to another, so it’s helpful to have a strategy to remove bad behaviors and learn good behaviors to use in the new place. Our study provided the experimental evidence to show that this is also what happens in real life,” Chimento said.

“Our findings support cutting back on sedentary time to reduce cardiovascular risk, with 10.5 hours a day marking a potentially key threshold tied to higher heart failure and cardiovascular mortality,” said Shaan Khurshid, MD, MPH, a cardiologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital. “Too much sitting or lying down can be harmful for heart health, even for those who are active.”
This study examined the amount of sedentary time at which CVD risk is greatest and explored how sedentary behavior and physical activity together impact the chances of atrial fibrillation (心房顫動) (AF), HF, myocardial infarction (心肌梗死) (MI) and CVD death.
Among the 89,530 study participants of the UK Biobank, participants submitted data from a wrist-worn triaxial accelerometer that captured movement over seven days. The average sedentary time per day was 9.4 hours. After an average follow-up of eight years, 3,638 individuals developed incident AF; 1,854 developed incident HF; 1,610 developed indecent MI; 846 died of CVD causes.
For study participants who met the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity or more, the effects of sedentary behavior on AF and MI risks were substantially reduced, but effects on higher risk of HF and CVD mortality remained prominent.
“This study adds to the growing evidence of a strong link between sedentary behavior and cardiovascular health,” said Khurshid. “The findings strongly suggest that we need to get people moving to promote better health. Future guidelines and public health efforts should stress the importance of cutting down on sedentary time. Avoiding more than 10.6 hours per day may be a realistic minimal target for better heart health.”

Eventually, we passed the finish line of the race and were excited with joy to have completed it despite the predicament that we were in. “That was surely an exciting adventure,” I commented with a cheerful smile as the rest shared the same opinion as I did. I would never forget my teammates and I working together despite the accident. Recalling the exciting adventure, I still swelled with pride.
