My daughter is intelligent, but she’d never read an entire chapter book for pleasure. She’d read books for
school, but getting her to do that was like pulling teeth, and on her own she’d read graphic novels and listened to
“Harry Potter” audiobooks. None of those activities became a gateway to deep reading.
As a lifelong reader, I understand how reading enhances life. Yet, I found it difficult to communicate this to
my daughter. She claimed to dislike reading and her friends also “weren’t into” reading. Certainly, my daughter’s
having landed a smartphone last year is part of the problem. Before the phone, I had a child who was like a social
Tigger, screaming with delight at something as simple as a new dessert. Post-phone, I had a monosyllabic blanket
slug who wanted only to stay in her room with the door closed, under a quilt, palming that little rectangle as if
unhanding it would make her social life disappear.
So I campaigned. I told her she needed to read because books are the best way to learn about how people’s
insides work. She said she could learn more from watching the people spilling their insides on social media. I said
books offer storytelling; she said Netflix did. … I realized I couldn’t win the debates because her arguments against
reading seemed valid. Still, I wanted her to experience the subtle magic of reading — when an author sums up a
feeling you didn’t even know you had, and lightbulbs go off on the top of your head.
第 5頁/共 13頁
So I offered her $ 100 to read a novel. She was surprised but agreed. We made a deal: $100 if she finished
“The Summer I Turned Pretty” in a month. She finished the book in seven days and then read the sequel (續篇) in
two weeks without extra pay.
Will this lead to a lifelong love of reading I don’t know. But we’ve opened a new portal to the printed page
for her. I hope this quiet personal place will serve her for a lifetime.
24. What was the author’s concern about her daughter’s reading
A. She lost interest in academic reading. B. She preferred graphic novels to audio books.
C. She was missing out on the joy of deep reading. D. She was discouraged from reading by her friends.
25. What does the term “blanket slug” refer to in paragraph 2
A. A social butterfly. B. A blanket-wrapped sleeper.
C. A bookworm beneath a blanket. D. A physically inactive phone addict.
26. What does the author think of the deal made with her daughter
A. Rewarding. B. Short-sighted. C. Amusing. D. Short-lived.
27. What’s the suitable title for this passage
A. How to Make Your Child Love Reading B. A $ 100-bet on Daughter’s Reading Habit
C. The Struggle of Parenting in the Digital Age D. The Decline of Children’s Reading Interest
C
One of my bad habits is saying “busy” when people ask me how I’m doing. Sometimes it’s because I actually
am busy, but other times it’s because that’s what I think I’m supposed to say. That’s what important people say.
That’s what people who get promoted say. But working long hours doesn’t drive better results. Never taking a
vacation won’t lead to a promotion. So why are we so proud to talk about how busy we are all the time
In 2016, researchers from Columbia, Harvard, and Georgetown conducted a study to figure it out. They found
busy people are perceived to be of high status, and interestingly, these status attributions are heavily influenced by
our own beliefs about social mobility. In other words, the more we believe that one has the opportunity for success
based on hard work, the more we tend to think that people who skip leisure and work all the time are of higher
standing.
That’s why we feel like we have to appear busy, and there’s a real perception that if someone is knee-deep in
meetings, emails and stress, then they’re probably a big deal. This culture of busyness is making it hard for
employees to find work-life balance. According to a recent study, one in five highly engaged employees are at risk
of burnout.
第 6頁/共 13頁
Personally, I’m going to stop saying “busy” when people ask me how I am. It sounds self-righteous (自以為
是的) and sets the wrong tone. Phrases like “I have limited access to email” and “I’ll respond as soon as I get back”
sound like you’re being held against your will from working as opposed to making the most of your time off.
That’s why we recently launched the Out of Office Email Generator a free tool you can use before your next
long weekend or trip. You can share loud and proud that you won’t be checking email until you’re back. Managers
need to think twice about emailing their teams on the weekend and talking about how busy they are. Leaders should
take time off themselves and encourage employees to do the same.
28. Why do people tend to say they are busy
A. Busyness ensures accomplishments.
B. Busyness is a symbol of social status.
C. Opportunities for success never come easily.
D. Busy employees are favored by their superiors.
29. What will the author reply when asked how he is on weekends
A. I’m enjoying every bit of my vacation. B. I have limited access to email.
C. I’m knee-deep in meetings and emails. D. I’m buried in a pile of work.
30. Why was the Out of Office Email Generator launched
A. To remind employees to answer emails immediately.
B. To ensure employees make the best of their time off.
C. To inspire leaders to set an example by taking time off.
D. To encourage managers to feel free to email their teams.
31. What message does the author want to convey
A. Live life to the fullest. B. Promote the culture of busyness.
C. Make work-life balance a priority. D. Work harder to achieve higher status.
D
The differences in health outcomes are neither new nor unknown. From differences in life span to uneven
access to quality healthcare, the so-called “Health Gap” is a persistent and troubling indication of inequality. People
living in low and middle-income countries are far more likely to die from preventable and treatable causes.
According to the World Health Organization, obvious differences in health outcomes persist (持續存在) within
countries, cutting along socioeconomic and geographic lines.
第 7頁/共 13頁
Closing these health gaps is both a moral and practical need because every human being has a right to a
healthy, dignified life; practical because health inequities bring about substantial economic and social costs. Health
inequities could cost the U. S. economy approximately $ 320 billion annually and rise to $ 1 trillion by 2040 if not
addressed. These figures emphasize the need for systemic solutions that look at the root causes.
Artificial intelligence has entered the scene as a new tool in the attempt to remake the health system. Broadly
speaking, pattern recognition and personalized care are the two focuses in that context. AI applications can detect
diseases—often earlier and more accurately than humans—tailor treatments to individual patients, and support
healthcare professionals in managing complex caseloads (病例). Preventive interventions can save lives and
resources while increasing the quality of life of humans. AI-powered prediction models have been used to identify
patients at high risk of complications or chronic (慢性病) conditions such as kidney disease, which otherwise often
goes unnoticed until significant damage is done to the body.
Beyond clinical settings, AI-driven analyses of large datasets — from hospital records to socioeconomic
indicators — can highlight at-risk communities, helping policymakers and health organizations distribute
resources more effectively. By locating under-served areas and identifying populations least likely to access
preventive services, AI can guide targeted community interventions, mobile clinics, health education programs, and
other initiatives to close the health gap.
While the potential is large, AI’s effectiveness in closing the health gap depends on more than just
technological advancement. AI must be deliberately designed, trained, tested, and targeted to bring out the best in
and for people and the planet.
32. What can we learn about the health gap from paragraph 1
A. It rarely exists in wealthy countries. B. It is the root of economic difference.
C It refers to unfairness in health outcomes. D. It shows the equal distribution of resources.
33. What do the figures indicate in paragraph 2
A. Economic trouble in US. B. Costly medical expenses in US.
C. The urgency of closing health gap. D. The moral dilemma facing Americans.
34. What can AI do to improve the health system
A. Prevent the spread of diseases. B. Cure patients with chronic conditions.
C. Replace doctors to manage caseloads. D. Detect diseases and offer tailored treatments.
35. What is the passage mainly about
第 8頁/共 13頁
A. How AI serves to get rid of inequality. B. What role AI plays in closing health gap.
C. What challenges AI faces in medical field. D. How AI stimulates technological advancement.

The Pecan Thief
Plunk! I dropped another plump pecan (美洲山核桃) into my bucket (桶). Then a cool autumn breeze shook a
few more nuts loose from the tree and I scrambled to pick them up from the ground. Whew! Pecan picking was
really hard work, I thought, and my bucket was barely half full.
I was six years old, visiting my grandfather’s farm in Kansas, and Grandpa had sent me into the woods to
gather pecans for us to enjoy later. The pecans were about the size of a man’s thumbnail and just about the tastiest
snack I’d ever had. I wasn’t about to let him down.
Just then something caught my eye: A large brown squirrel (松鼠) was digging at the dirt a few feet away. I
watched in amazement as he picked up a pecan in his jaws and rushed toward a tree. The industrious squirrel
climbed up the trunk and disappeared into a large hole. A moment later the squirrel popped back out and climbed
down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once again, he took the pecan back to his secret hiding place inside the
hollow of the tree.
Not so secret anymore, I thought. I dashed over to the tree and stared into the hollow. It was stuffed with
pecans. This was my chance. Handful by handful, I scooped all of those pecans into my little bucket. Now it was

almost full!
I was so proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all of the pecans I’d collected. I quickly ran back
and found him sitting outside, shelling a cob of corn to feed to the hens.
“Look, Grandpa,” I shouted, “look at all of the pecans I found!”

66.【答案】Dear Mr. Ford,
I am thrilled to accept your heartfelt invitation to participate in the online exchange event entitled “Festive
China”, organized by our sister school.
For my contribution, I have chosen to focus on the detailed aspects of the Chinese New Year, or Spring
Festival, as it embodies the essence of Chinese traditions and values. Furthermore, the rich tapestry of customs,
from dragon and lion dances to the fancy firework displays, offers a compelling illustration of China’s cultural
diversity and historical heritage.
Thank you once again for this wonderful opportunity.
Yours sincerely,

【答案】 He gazed into the bucket. “Well, well, how did you ever find so many ” I told him how I’d followed
the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place in the hollow tree. I was beaming when I finished my tale.
Grandpa congratulated me on how resourceful I’d been in observing the squirrel and his habits. Then he did
something that surprised me. He handed the bucket back to me and wrapped his arm gently around my shoulders.
“That squirrel worked very hard to gather his winter supply of food,” he said. “Now that all of his pecans are gone,
don’t you think that little squirrel will be mighty hungry when it gets cold ” Suddenly I felt as hollow as that old
tree. The image of that starving squirrel wouldn’t leave my mind. There was only one thing I could do.
I picked up that little bucket full of pecans and carried it back to the tree. In sight came the heartbroken
squirrel squeaking bitterly. Lifting the bucket up, I poured all of the nuts back into the hole, refilling it with all of
the squirrel’s pecans and the ones I had collected on my own. “Sorry, I didn’t think about that,” I whispered to the
frozen creature. I didn’t eat any of the sweet pecans that night, but I had something much more filling. The
satisfaction of knowing I had done just the right thing. A good man should never take advantage of someone else’s
hard work, even the squirrels.
