People operated on by female surgeons are less likely to experience difficulties and need follow-up care than by male surgeons, according to a study in Canada.
Dr. Christopher Wallis led the study at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. His team looked at post-surgery problems in nearly 1.2 million patients between 2007 and 2019. The records included 25 different surgical procedures on the heart, brain, bones, organs and blood vessels.
The analysis, reported in JAMA Surgery, showed that 90 days after an operation, 13.9% of patients treated by a male surgeon had “uncomfortable post-operative events”, a term that includes death and medical difficulties ranging from problems that require further surgery to major infections (感染), heart attacks and strokes (中風(fēng)). The equal figure for patients seen by female surgeons was 12.5%.
Patients seen by female surgeons performed better one year after surgery too, with 20.7% having an uncomfortable post-operative event, compared with 25% of those seen by male surgeons. When the doctors looked purely at post-surgery deaths, the difference was even starker: patients treated by male surgeons were 25% more likely to die one year after surgery than those treated by female surgeons.
Further investigations show that female surgeons tend to operate more slowly and may achieve better results by taking their time in the operating theater.
Wallis said there were “numerous lessons” to learn. “Improving the social status of female physicians is essential,” Dr. Wallis said. “Besides attracting more women to surgery, there is a need to promote them to positions of influence. There is a wealth of data that the numbers of women in senior positions are decreasing,” he added.
24. What do the data in paragraphs 3 and 4 show
A. 25% of patients treated by male surgeons risked death.
B. Patients treated by female surgeons had better outcomes.
C. Post-operative problems decreased with time.
D. Male surgeons were less responsible.
25. What does the underlined word “starker” in paragraph 4 mean
A. More obvious. B. More annoying. C. More unnoticeable. D. Smaller.
26. What can we conclude about female surgeons’ performance
A. No pains, no gains. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Slow work produces fine products. D. The winner is the one who holds on to the last.
27. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Women physicians are generally wiser. B. Hospitals need more surgeons.
C Surgeons should have a knowledge of evolution. D. Fewer women surgeons serve in higher ranks now.

I’m Thomas from the United Kingdom, working in Beijing, and I’m a shopping addict (迷). The main source of my addiction is Taobao, China’s massive online shopping platform — a place for everything from clothes to books, and everything in between. It makes Amazon look like a corner shop.
My favorite is mostly books and different kinds of water bottles. My cupboard has a shelf full of them, many of which my size will no longer allow me to crowd into.
What’s worse is that the app’s very clever algorithms (算法) track what I look through, so every time I open it on my phone, I am greeted by an advertisement inviting me to dip deeper into my digital wallet. I don’t even have to open the app. They are available to purchase with just a tap of my finger.
Once you make an order, you need to wait. The shipping gives your heart a little hit. Then there’s another little rush of endorphins (內(nèi)啡肽) when the delivery person picks it up. You watch your package edging its way up the map to Beijing. When the app tells you it’s on the delivery bike, the same excitement as a kid on Christmas morning takes hold as you wait for the knock at the door. Much like a little dog waiting for its master to return home from work.
The packaging is eagerly removed, exciting another hit of happiness. An hour later, the buyer’s regret comes. To make yourself feel better, you start using the app once more and the cycle starts all over again.
I could blame my addiction on Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba, Taobao’s parent company, or point a finger at Liu Qiangdong, founder of JD, a similarly addictive domestic shopping app. I could even blame Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who started all this e-commerce.
“Surely, Thomas,” I hear you ask, “instead of blaming poor billionaires, you should take responsibility for your own sudden desire and lack of willpower.”
28. Why is Thomas crazy about Taobao
A. It helps bring in money. B. He prefers online platforms.
C. Amazon is too distant to access. D. It offers multiple item options.
29. How can Thomas’s phone know what he prefers
A. His digital wallet pays for it automatically. B. He searches online when he opens the phone.
C. The app’s algorithms follow his digital footprints. D. He communicates with the Taobao business owner.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The accuracy of the shopping app. B. The challenges of online shopping
C. The long journey of a purchased item. D. The author’s expectation of the purchased item
31. What does the author want to convey in this passage
A. We should be responsible for our purchasing. B. We should criticize Taobao.
C. We should say no to e-commerce. D. We should admire billionaires.
D
Are three-minute commentaries destroying movies A prominent Chinese film director Zhang Yimou said in a recent interview that he hoped the audience would see a movie in cinemas instead of watching three-minute commentaries.
Three-minute commentaries are similar to short videos, which summarize the main plots of films by breaking two-or-three-hour films into pieces and cutting them to just a few minutes. These commentaries are winning increasing popularity on many short-video platforms such as TikTok or Bilibili since they allow viewers to easily develop an illusion (錯覺) that they have watched dozens of movies.
These concentrated commentaries may be a good fit for fast-paced modern life and meet people’s needs for efficient entertainment. However, films are not only an industry but also a form of art. Movies become classics not only because of the outline of the story, but, more importantly, because of delicate expressions of emotion, diverse camera aesthetics, as well as complex travel through time and space. Sometimes, these things can only be felt and can’t be expressed in words. How can a clip of just a few minutes deliver these things
Moreover, these contents sometimes infringe the copyrights of the original movie. The editing process also includes the creator’s own opinions, thus misunderstanding original movie’s plots and themes. The China Film Administration has announced. it will carry on with its crackdown (打擊) on copyright infringement while at the same time advocating the legal use of film copyrights by short videos in film promotion, commentaries and research.
Some people agree with Zhang Yimou. They argue that only by seeing a movie in the cinema can one really experience its beauty. Others, however, have given credit to movie commentaries, arguing that they increase the popularity and influence of good movies, helping audiences better understand them while also finding out bad movies, helping audiences avoid them. Audiences’ decision to watch a movie in a cinema depends on their tastes. If they choose not to sit in front of the big screen, it’s not necessarily the fault of movie commentaries.
32. According to the passage, why are three-minute commentaries becoming popular
A. They are produced by famous Chinese director Zhang Yimou.
B. They are constantly played on prominent short-video platforms.
C. Audiences would think they have watched lots of films.
D. Audiences could be entertained by three-minute commentaries.
33. What can we infer from the third paragraph
A. Films are a form of good art.
B. Three-minute commentaries could also express emotion.
C. Good films could lead audiences to travel.
D. Films aren’t fit for life in a fast-paced society.
34. What does the underlined word “infringe” mean
A. Break. B. Protect. C. Maintain. D. Carry.
35. What is a suitable title for the passage
A. Zhang Yimou’s movies: not popular anymore B. Short-video platforms: an increasing trend
C. Cinemas: how to attract audiences nowadays D. Three-minute commentaries: a good or bad thing

Finally, the opportunity came. His class planned to organize a trip to plant trees in a local village on weekends. Yuri was very excited about this and couldn’t wait to tell his mother the good news. So the next day, Yuri and his mother went to buy some tools, including a shovel (鐵鍬), a bucket, , gloves and so on.
On the day of the event, Yuri and his classmates arrived early. The weather was very good, and everyone looked particularly happy. Holding the tools, Yuri got on the bus with others and set off to their destination.
