In Britain all children have to go to school between the ages of 5 and 16. In the US children must go to school from the age of 6 to the ages between 14 and 16, depending on the state they live in.
Subjects
In England and Wales the subjects taught in schools are laid down by the National Curriculum, which was introduced in 1988 and sets out in detail the subjects that children should study and the levels of achievement they should reach by the ages of 7,11,14, and 16, when they are tested. The National Curriculum does not apply to Scotland, where each school decides what subjects it will teach.
Examinations
At 16, students in England and Wales take GCSE examinations. These examinations are taken by students of all levels of ability in any of a range of subjects, and may involve a final examination, an assessment of work done during the two-year course, or both of these things. At 18 some students take A-level examinations, usually in no more than three subjects. It is necessary to have A levels in order to go to university.
In Scotland students take the SCE examinations. A year later, they can take examinations called Highers, after which they can either go straight to a university or spend a further year at school and take the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies. In Scotland the university system is different from that in England and Wales. Courses usually last four years rather than three, and students study a large number of subjects as part of their degree.
21.In which parts of the world are the subjects taught only decided by the nation
A.England and Wales. B.England and Scotland.
C.US and Britain. D.Wales and Scotland.
22.Which of the following has nothing to do with students in Scotland
A.GCSE. B.SCE.
C.Highers. D.The Certificate of Sixth Year Studies.
23.Which of the following is TRUE
A.In the US, only local government can decide the subjects.
B.In Scotland, students can take either the SCE examinations or the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies.
C.In England and Wales, one cannot go to university without A levels.
D.As for a 16-year-old student in England and Wales, he has to take both GCSE examinations and a final examination.

Laptop computers (筆記本電腦) are popular all over the world. In the United States today, lap-tops also connect students to their classrooms. Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program whose main purpose is to allow students to do schoolwork anywhere.
Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10,000,000 computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with lap- tops will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates and their families, without going to computer labs. They can use it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees — anywhere at all!
Because of many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources.
At Westlake College, more than 60% of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow teachers to use computers in their lessons. As some Westlake teachers said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”
24.What is the main purpose of the laptop computer program
A.To help people work at home.
B.To connect students to libraries.
C.To encourage students to surf the Internet.
D.To allow students to do schoolwork anywhere.
25.Which of the following is true about Westlake College
A.Students must do their homework in computer labs.
B.1,500 students of the college will receive laptops.
C.All the staff of the college use computers.
D.It is a new college in America.
26.What’s some teachers’ attitude towards the program
A.Doubtful. B.Worrying.
C.Supportive. D.Uncaring.
27.What is the best title for the text
A.A Laptop Program in Westlake College B.Laptop Computers Make People Closer
C.A Famous College in Virginia: Westlake D.Computer Technology Provides Resources

Every school has students who stand out for their abilities and their eagerness (渴望) to learn. In Mexico, a school created a program to work with them. In 2019. both teachers Lotta Andersson and John Rennie got the idea to provide learning opportunities for students with a desire for knowledge. They are English coordinators (協調員) in the school. “We want to have a program to encourage students who really have the abilities and the interests to learn more and continue accepting challenges,” Andersson said during a recent interview.
Students in the program, which was called Learning Challenges, met with the teachers about once a month. Andersson and Rennie would help us choose research topics. We then worked with the teachers to find books, interview subjects and Internet sources, While in Learning Challenges, I gave statements on European culture and the fashion industry.
When asked what skills students had formed in the program, which ended in June 2020 because of the limits of a common disease. Andersson said, “They had learned to ask questions, be more open-minded and see things from different angles (角度). Also, they mastered the skills-reflecting more, acting actively, and learning not to put limits on themselves.”
A student, Yihane Abed, carried out research on the sun, the moon, stars, planets, etc, while in Learning Challenges. “The skills I developed were teamwork and the ways to do research and give a good presentation,” she said.
Andersson and Rennie continue to help students pursue their love of learning. “The program doesn’t exist formally, but as an important part of the culture at school, it is still needed,” Andersson said. “There is much more difference, not only for students who need extra help, but also for those who are higher achievers.”

High school ended and all I remembered was feeling stuck. Most of my peers (同齡人) had picked out their majors and some even planned their careers. But I was still wondering about that.
I’ve always enjoyed writing but didn’t know how to make a career out of it. After researching my options, such as journalism, I thought Professional Communications could improve my writing skills and lead me to a career in business. With that, I sent in my application, was accepted and started preparing for my first term of university.
When course intentions rolled around, I began looking at the list of minors. Marketing caught my attention. It would complement (補充) my communications degree while providing me with the necessary business courses that were outside of the program. Without hesitation, I scheduled marketing into my studies, with the goal of using that newfound knowledge to accompany the technical skills that my major would provide me with.
My school year began in a pretty typical way: the orientation week (迎新周), joining clubs and meeting new people. As time went on, I found myself enjoying the marketing courses more than the communications courses, and it was then that I first began to consider making a change. Finally, I spoke with a friend who had switched to a different major, and his words of encouragement were the final push I needed to go through with the decision. A few days later, I sent in my application, and soon I received my acceptance letter.
I’ve now been gifted with a wonderful start to the year, and I couldn’t be happier about making the change. I feel less pressured to “find myself” and can put 110% effort into my studies. A note to high school students: University brings with it a load of new beginnings and self-reflection. It’s perfectly fine to come into university thinking you want one thing and finding out along the way that it might not be the right path for you.

How to Be a Successful High School Student
Being a successful high school student requires both patience and motivation (動力). There are many distractions (使人分心的事) during teen years. To become a successful student, you have to say “no” to them. It may be hard, but hard work always pays off. 36

Stay organized.
Make sure you have everything you need. If your teacher likes to lecture, have a notebook for notes to help you remember. 38 They’ll be easier to find later. If your binder (活頁夾) starts to get full, transfer old papers into another binder to keep at home. This way you won’t have to put them around, but they will be there when needed.
Make friends.
There’s too much going on to worry about: who’s friends with whom, who the popular people are. The best thing to do is to be friendly to and with everyone. Be confident and be yourself. 39 The more comfortable you become with people, the more people will like you.
40
It’s easy to forget to stay in shape when the work becomes more, so joining a team makes it less worry. If you’re going for all three seasons, that’s great, but make sure you’re being practical with your time. Try your hardest at both your sport and your schoolwork and you should be more than great. You’re healthy and on top of your schoolwork.

It was my first day at a new school in England because my family had moved here from Wales a week before. The moment I stepped through the big iron gates, a feeling of worry came over me. The large campus, with its old buildings covered in ivy and very neatly cut lawns, was really beautiful, but it just made me more nervous. I held my books tightly, and my hands started to sweat as the unfamiliar faces and the strange accents surrounded me like a thick fog that I couldn’t get through. I felt like a lonely traveler in a strange place, really wanting to see something familiar.
Along the way, I accidentally knocked into a boy. “Sorry, ”I said quietly, my eyes quickly looking down at the ground because I was too shy to look at him. “No problem,” he answered with a warm and real smile that cut through my uneasiness like a bright light. In that short talk, a little hope started to shine inside me; maybe this new place wouldn’t be the scary maze (迷宮) I was afraid of.
When I entered the classroom, the teacher introduced me to the class. I could feel everyone looking at me, and my cheeks turned bright red, as if they were on fire. I quickly sat down, and my heart was beating so hard that it seemed like the whole room could hear it. Would I be able to make friends Could I do well in the classes These questions kept bothering me all the time. The bell rang for the first break, and I walked slowly and nervously to the schoolyard, my steps as careful as a baby deer’s first steps in the woods. I looked around, partly hoping to see a friendly face, but also afraid of being refused.
注意:
1. 續寫詞數應為 150 左右;

根據文章第三段“When asked what skills students had formed in the program, which ended in June 2020 because of the limits of a common disease. Andersson said, “They had learned to ask questions, be more open-minded and see things from different angles (角度). Also, they mastered the skills-reflecting more, acting actively, and learning not to put limits on themselves.”(由于一種常見疾病的限制,該項目于2020年6月結束,當被問及學生們在該項目中形成了哪些技能時。Andersson說:“他們學會了問問題,更加開放,從不同的角度看問題。同時,他們也掌握了這些技能——更多地反思,更積極地行動,學會不給自己設限。”)”可知,第三段主要介紹了學生從項目中獲得的能力。故選B。
30.細節理解題。根據文章倒數第二段“A student, Yihane Abed, carried out research on the sun, the moon, stars, planets, etc, while in Learning Challenges. “The skills I developed were teamwork and the ways to do research and give a good presentation,” she said.(學生Yihane Abed在學習挑戰中對太陽、月亮、恒星、行星等進行了研究。她說:“我培養的技能是團隊合作,以及做研究和做好演講的方法。”)”可知,Yihane Abed進行的研究和宇宙相關。故選A。

根據第一段中的“High school ended and all I remembered was feeling stuck. Most of my peers (同齡人) had picked out their majors and some even planned their careers. But I was still wondering about that.

故選A項。

根據最后一段中的“It’s perfectly fine to come into university thinking you want one thing and finding out along the way that it might not be the right path for you. (進入大學時,你認為自己想要一件事,但一路上發現這可能不是你的正確選擇,這是完全可以的。)”以及結合作者轉專業的經歷及其對待轉專業的態度“I couldn’t be happier about making the change (做出改變,我高興極了)”可推斷,作者建議高中生對在大學中改變初衷或者改變學術道路(轉專業)持開放態度。故選B項。

66. A Report on Students’ Taking Exercise
I’m a Senior One student. Recently I have found that many students in my class seldom take physical exercise and some of them even give it up completely. They owe it to the fact that study and homework take up too much of their time, and some prefer to lie on the bed for a rest rather than work out. Some quit exercise for fear of being hurt.
As far as I am concerned, they should change their thought. Balance can be struck between study and exercise. As the saying goes, “All work no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Proper exercise can sharpen our mind and help reduce stress. On the other hand, as long as they wear comfortable clothes and shoes as instructed, and keep alert while doing exercise, they can avoid hurting themselves.

67. Standing alone in the corner of the schoolyard, I watched the other students chatting and laughing. The cold wind blew hard through the schoolyard, moving the leaves and making me tremble. I crouched closer to the corner, the cold stone wall against my back. Groups of students got together, their active conversations floating in the air, so different from my silence. Worries filled my mind like the spinning dead leaves around my feet. Was it worth it to try to fit in The greatness of the strangeness seemed impossible to get over. I almost persuaded myself to go back to the empty classroom, but a faint hope held me back.
Just as I was about to give up, the boy I bumped into earlier came towards me. With a friendly wave, he closed the distance between us. “Come on, let’s join the fun!” he exclaimed. His friends nodded in agreement, their faces open and inviting. As we talked, I found myself relaxing. It turned out that we all loved the same books and dreamed of faraway adventures. By the time the bell rang, I was no longer the outsider. I learned that a simple act of kindness could transform a day, and that reaching out was all it took to find my place in this new world.
