Stop wasting food! Activity update
The activity to reduce food waste has just entered its third week, and we’re already seeing
some great results. We’d like every student and teacher to join in the activity at school and at
home, so if you haven’t started yet, read on and join in!
Stop wasting food at school
According to school lunch director Marge Kaplan, “The children are making a big effort to
think in a sensible way about the food they put on their plates. We now have about 15% less waste
and we think this percentage will grow as more children join in the activity.”
The school canteen now offers two sizes for all main meals: small and large. This week they’ll
replace single bread rolls with slices of bread. You can take as many slices as you want, but one at
a time to save waste.
Stop wasting food at home
Every year, we waste about a third of our food. A lot of this waste is cereals, fruit and
vegetables. In the UK, more than 97% of waste ends up in a landfill site. That’s a lot!
Come to a special meeting with supermarket owner Carlos Rodriguez to learn how we can
save food and money at home!

A simple honk(汽車喇叭聲) from the bus is one part of a secret code(代碼) between the driver
and students living in a far-away village in Wanzhou, Chongqing.
Seeing a schoolbag hanging from the doorknob(門把手) of an old house along the road, the bus

Imagine a group of people are talking about something happily. But there is one man who
cannot follow them. Why He has a hearing problem. How can we help such people
Now a new and exciting invention allows deaf people to see conversations in real time. Using
augmented reality (AR) glasses and a smartphone, deaf people are also able to join in everyday
conversations.
The AR glasses were developed by Dan Scarfe after he spent Christmas dinner with his family.
The man saw his 97-year-old bearing-impaired grandfather sitting alone in silence while the rest of
the family were talking excitedly. The images of his grandfather always watching TV shows with
subtitles(字幕) crossed Scarfe's mind. He suddenly realized that maybe the AR glasses could help.
Scarfe got to work, working with Nreal, an AR glasses maker. Six months later, a new pair of
AR glasses came out. The glasses have a microphone that receives the audio (音頻 ) from the
environment and sends it to a connected smartphone. The phone then creates subtitles from that
audio and these subtitles then appear on the user's glasses screen.
The company first tested the glasses in the UK. The UK was chosen as a testing ground as over
13 million adults in Britain have hearing loss. However, when the product goes global, it could
change the lives of 430 million people. This is a great change for the deaf. Mark Atkinson, who is
using the AR glasses, says, "As a deaf person myself, I am blown away by this new technology.
When I tried on the glasses for the first time, I was so surprised. Real-time subtitles made me
become part of the conversation as never before. "

B. Because the company Nreal is based in the UK.
C. Because the government provided the money.
D. Because Dan Scarfe is from the UK.
49. What does the underlined part "am blown away by" probably mean
A. Be scared of. B. Be excited at. C. Be surprised at. D. Be bored with.
50. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE

①Having a bloody nose can make some people nervous, but in most cases, nosebleeds are easy
to stop and rarely serious. Around 60% of people will experience a bloody nose in their lifetime.
英語·第 5頁(共 8 頁)
Nosebleeds are most common in children from 2 to 10 years old and in adults aged 50 to 80.
②Common causes of nosebleeds include dry air and injuries to the nose or other parts of the
head. Blowing your nose too often when you have a cold can also lead to nosebleeds. You probably
already know how to stop a bloody nose right away, but it's important to do it properly and safely.
③Always sit up straight when your nose is bleeding, and never lie on your back. One of the
biggest mistakes in first aid is that you should lean (傾斜 ) back with a bloody nose, but the best
thing to do is to lean forward. The blood needs to go somewhere, and if the person leans back or lies
down, it will most likely go down his throat, possibly causing choking. And try not to put tissues (紙
巾) into your nose.
④Pinching (捏住) the nose properly stops or slows the bleeding. Hold the nose for at least five
minutes. Do not let go to check for bleeding until at least the first five minutes are up. If you can,
keep the pressure on for longer.
⑤After five minutes, see if the bleeding has stopped. If not, pinch again, but keep it up for 10
minutes this time. Remember: Don't let go to check for bleeding until the 10 minutes are up. If
bleeding doesn't stop after that time, repeat it for another 10 minutes if necessary.
⑥Avoid activities such as heavy lifting, blowing or picking your nose for a day after the
nosebleed has stopped. Remember that if you can't stop the nosebleed with these methods, see a
doctor immediately.
51. What can lead to nosebleeds according to the passage
A. Moist air B. Injuries to the nose
C. Blowing the nose sometimes D. Having a cough
52. What does Paragraph③ explain
A. Why you shouldn't worry about nosebleeds.
B. Why you shouldn't put tissues into your nose.
C. Why you should stop nosebleeds immediately.
D. Why you should lean forward not back with a bloody nose.
53. Which of the following statements does the author agree with
A. Check your nose for bleeding after 3 minutes. B. Just pinch your nose for five minutes.
C. Repeat pinching the nose as needed. D. Pinch your nose as hard as you can.
54. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. The importance of first aid. B. How to prevent nosebleeds.
C. When to get first-aid training. D. How to stop a nosebleed properly.
55. What's the structure of the passage (①= Paragraph1,②= Paragraph2,③= Paragraph3. . . )
A. ① B.① C.①② D.① ②
② ②③ ③ ④ ③
③④⑤⑥ ④ ⑤ ⑥ ⑤ ⑥ ④ ⑤⑥

the same fingerprints, each giraffe has its own special pattern of spots -unless, of course, it doesn't

英語·第 6頁(共 8 頁)
On July 31st, a very unusual baby giraffe was born at a zoo in Tennessee, the US. The baby

Japan. " Now, the baby giraffe is believed to be the only spotless giraffe in the world. 58 Mr.
Bright said,"She's very sweet. "
A giraffe's pattern of spots is created when the animal is still growing inside its mother. 59
Mr. Bright said,"The new giraffe would not have lived very long, if she had been born in the wild.
She could be a prime target for hunting (狩獵)because she's so unusual. "
60 Thirty-five years ago, there were around 36,000 wild reticulated giraffes. Now, the
number has been cut by more than 50%. Around 16,000 reticulated giraffes remain in the wild,

Today plastic is all around us. Here comes the problem: what do you usually do with those
plastic things after using them If you don't deal with them the right way, the plastic can do harm to
the environment and the health of people and animals. Many animals lost their lives because of it.
They thought it was food and ate a lot.
There is a company in Dubai, and its name is DGrade. About 14 years ago, it came up with an idea:
turning the recycled plastic bottles into T-shirts.After years of hardwork, the companymade it!
It's not easy. “There is so much plastic here - 10 million water bottles are made every day in the
UAE (阿聯酋),”said Emma Barber, director of DGrade. “Here at DGrade, we recycle PET plastic.
We take plastic bottles to our factory in Abu Dhabi. Then we turn them into green yarn (紡線). When
we have the yarn, we can make it into different kinds of things, such as my T-shirt. We need 1,500
tons of plastic a month. One ton of plastic equals (等于) about 50,000 bottles. A polar bear weighs a
ton, so the plastic we need every month weighs as much as 1,500 polar bears. "
When doing this, the company can save 20% of water. Now DGrade is also making face masks,
cups and bags out of recycled plastic bottles. These things are very good and popular. The company
is making a big number of clothes every year. It is also making school uniforms for 200 schools.

Hi! I hope everything's super good with you. I've been having a hard time at school
because some kids are not being nice to me. They call my nicknames(綽號) and don't let me
play with them, which makes me feel really sad and left out. I remember you told me you had to
deal with someone who wasn't nice to you last year, and you were really brave about it. Could
you give me some tips on what to do when someone isn't nice I really want to know how to
make things better.
Thanks for being my friend.
