Albert Einstein owed his brilliant mind to having a child-like sense of humour. Indeed, a number of studies have found an association between humour and intelligence. Researchers in Austria recently discovered that funny people, particularly those who enjoy dark humour, have higher IQs than their less funny fellows. They argue that it takes both cognitive (認知的) and emotional ability to process and produce humour. Their analysis shows that funny people have higher intelligence, and they score lower in mood disturbance and aggressiveness.
In psychology we use the term “positive humour style” to refer to people who use humour to enhance relationships and reduce conflict. This type of humour is associated with relationship satisfaction, extroversion (外向性) and high self-respect. Having a humorous outlook on life is also a good coping strategy. It helps people better manage stress and challenges.
Not only do funny people make other people laugh, they also laugh more themselves. And laughter leads to brain changes, which may explain the link between humour and intelligence. Neuropsychological studies have found that experiencing positive emotional states, such as joy, fun and happiness, increases the production of dopamine (多巴胺) in the brain. Dopamine not only make us feel great, it also opens up the learning centres of the brain, which enables and sustains more neural (神經) connections. As a result, we become more flexible and creative in our thinking, and better at solving problems. It also boosts our working memory.
Evidence suggests that humour actually bolster feelings of confidence, competence and status, making funny people very influential. Humour gets people to listen, helps communicate messages and aids learning. It is a powerful tool that many successful leaders use to enhance group work and organisational culture. Studies of positive organisations suggest the more fun we have at work the more productive we are, and the less likely we are to suffer burn-out.
Research on the use of humour in education also supports the concept that humour is an effective aid to learning. Several studies have demonstrated that lessons that are delivered with humour are more enjoyable for students, and also enhance students comprehension and recall of the topic.

Airplane disasters are statistically rare. When they do happen, however, they are often destructive and people want answers as to why their loved ones lost their lives, and that is where black boxes come into play.
A black box is an electronic recording device, placed in an aircraft to facilitate the investigation of flight accidents and incidents. There are two different flight recorder devices. The flight data recorder (FDR) preserves the recent history of the flight, things like airspeed, altitude, vertical acceleration (垂直加速度) and fuel flow. The cockpit voice recorder (CVR) preserves the recent history of the sounds in the cockpit, including the conversation between the pilots as well as with the air traffic control tower, which can give vital clues to investigators in case of a crash. The two devices may be combined in a single unit on every commercial flight, usually kept in the tail of an aircraft, where they are more likely to survive a crash.
A black box is equipped with an underwater locator beacon (ULB). If an aircraft crashes into water, the beacon sends out an ultrasonic pulse (超聲脈沖) that is detectable by sonar (聲納) and audio equipment to depths to approximately 14,000 feet. Incredibly, the beacon is powered by a battery that has a shelf life of six years; once the beacon begins pinging (a command in computer language), it pings once per second for 30 days until its battery runs out. If a plane crash takes place on land and not on water, the locator beacons of the black box will not send out the ultrasonic pings, signalling the investigators to look for the unit around the crash site.
The term “black box” was a World War II British phrase, originating with the development of radio, radar, and electronic navigational aids in British and Allied combat aircraft. These often-secret electronic devices were literally encased in non-reflective black boxes or housings, hence the name “black box”. These black boxes are of flame-orange in colour. The recorders are bright orange to make them more visually eye-catching in the ruins after an accident.

Researchers are already looking into the effects of ChatGPT on medicine. A new study stated that the technology does have both benefits and drawbacks for the field. “The potential applications of ChatGPT in the medical field range from identifying potential research topics to assisting professionals in clinical and laboratory diagnosis (診斷),” the paper said. “However, despite its potential applications, the use of ChatGPT in medical writing also poses ethical and legal issues”.
Experts agree that ChatGPT could potentially help certain people navigate the healthcare system, but that it’s not there yet. As Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, president of the American Medical Association said to Today, “While AI products show tremendous promise in helping relieve physician administrative burdens and may ultimately be successfully applied in direct patient care, they currently have known issues and are not error free”. Having heard this, Mum was amazed at her son’s quick mind and thanked Kris for his bravery and loyalty.
