In 2013, Deegan was trying to take control of her life after winning the fight against drinking. She did quit, but she was having difficulty reconnecting with people. Even looking someone in the eye proved to be difficult. “I was sort of like a shell of a person and just didn’t really have many life skills or self-confidence,” Deegan said.
However, baking was something that always brought her joy as a child. One day while helping out in the neighborhood, Deegan picked up a handheld mixer and started baking. “My life was just out of control, but baking is such a controlled thing, where if you take the right steps and follow the directions, you’ll get a pretty exact result,” she said.
Deegan started bringing her homemade baked cookies to people’s homes, which helped her reconnect with people. “Feeding people is such a universal love language,” she said. However, she was still trying to figure out how to find a career at 27 years old. She had no real work experience and she couldn’t put ‘quit drinking’ on her resume.
Deegan’s life shifted in 2015. Encouraged by her friends, she challenged herself to see if she could sell just one pie. She sold dozens! She began baking out of her tiny apartment and eventually launched an official business in 2017. She spent four years developing a pie crust cookie recipe, which has since become the bread and butter of her business. “People have been walking, running and lining up to get cookies, and it’s just been so magical seeing that,” she said.
When she needs more help, Deegan says she looks for anyone who is just excited to work, even if they don’t have any experience. After her own struggle, she realized that the desire to work was better than having a certain skill set. And she became a second-chance employer, hiring women out of prison or the shelter system. “You just have to walk through the door and be ready, willing and able and excited to show up and work and you’ ve got a job,” Deegan told the reporter.

There is already much evidence that volunteering benefits adults’ physical and mental health. Now, scientists have found similar links to both physical and mental health in adolescents.
A 2023 analysis found that among more than 50,000 adolescents in the National Survey of Children’s Health, young people who had participated in community service or had volunteered over the previous 12 months were more likely to be in good health and stayed calm and in control when faced with challenges, and the adolescents were less likely to be anxious.
Admittedly, those findings are only correlations (相關(guān)性). “It could be that the children who were volunteering were already in great health,” says study co-leader Kevin Lanza. But because of an alarming rise in mental health issues among young people, he believes that the early findings are promising enough to dig into. A 2021 report warned that the percentage of young people suffering from constant sadness or hopelessness had increased by 40 percent over the previous decade.
When looking for ways to address it, researchers point to the role of “contribution” - providing support or resources to others or helping to achieve a shared goal - as an important piece of social and emotional development for adolescents. Young people have a developmental need to connect and belong. “Part of the exploration of adolescence and young adulthood is figuring out where you can be needed and useful - arguably key aspects of our mental health,” says developmental psychologist Andrew Fuligni.
Volunteering is one good way young people can contribute. The importance of mattering to others and to the larger world translates really well to the needs of adolescents to have a meaningful role to play in their community.
However, there may be a potential disadvantage of volunteering. Scientists have found that young people’s mental health can suffer if they feel their contributions are thought lowly of because of their sex, racial or ethnic identity or they are forced to participate. This situation creates a mixed world where art remains unique yet easily produced. It makes us wonder whether people should pay for such works and what their prices should be.
This issue is real, not imaginary. Spotify recently attracted AI researcher Francois Pachet, who used to work at Sony, to develop tools for human composers(作曲家). However, there have been reports that Spotify’s playlists included music from artists who don't actually exist, possibly allowing Spotify to avoid paying royalties (版稅). M: OK, welcome to Fast&Furious Mini Cars! I know you guys know how to drive cars out on the streets, but that doesn’t mean we can automatically trust you to handle these smaller vehicles on this indoor racetrack. So, before we get started, I just want to go over some ground rules.
Number 1: you must wear your helmet and seat belt at all times. Anyone who is found breaking this rule will be asked to leave the racetrack and will not receive a refund of their deposit.
Number 2: please drive safely. This means no bumping into other cars on purpose, and be aware that drivers who are judged to be driving too aggressively will be given a warning before being asked to leave.
Number 3: there is absolutely no eating, drinking, or smoking in the vehicles. There is a restaurant where drivers can relax between races, but nothing except the driver should be in the mini cars.
Finally, please make sure you are familiar with all the safety features of the vehicles before the first race starts. These include the door locks, the emergency braking system, and the emergency lights. If there is an accident out on the track, you’ll need to be able to use these features as quickly and safely as possible. You’ve all signed your insurance forms already, so if there are no other questions, pick out your helmets and let’s get out to the track and check out the cars!
