How to Fight Laziness
Lazy people will never gain anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.
32 Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.
Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. 33 Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life.
Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(誘惑) that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. 34 Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.
Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. 35
Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.
36 Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.
A. To fight family laziness, set an example.
B. One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.
C. Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness.
D. Well, what else can we do to fight laziness
E. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.
F. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child.
G. Others take a more positive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone.

Three pairs of eyes all focused on the two tickets to the big quarterfinals basketball game in Dad’s hand. Marcus, the oldest, Caleb, the youngest, and I, none of us offered to give up the chance to go with Dad.
Eventually Dad said, “Okay, I’ll figure out a fair way of choosing between the three of you by tomorrow morning. I’ll decide who deserves it most. Let me sleep on it.”
The next morning, Marcus hurried into the kitchen and asked, “Where’s Dad ”
“He and Mom were out,” Caleb answered, taking a bite of a biscuit.
“And Dad said we should all get started on our Saturday chores as soon as we finish breakfast,” I added.
“Chores! He must be kidding.” Marcus said as he set down his glass of milk. “How can we concentrate on chores when the big game is a mere eleven hours away ”
“Parents! They just don’t understand!” I agreed, popping the last piece of bread into my mouth.
“I’m going for the morning newspaper,” Marcus announced. “There’s probably a preview (預(yù)告) of tonight’s game in the sports section.”
“Wait for me!” Caleb added, slurping (發(fā)出咕嚕聲) the last of his milk and dashing after his little brother.
The back door snapped shut as the two boys raced out. I looked at the breakfast table: tiny puddles of milk, bits of biscuits here and there. Well, I thought to myself, “It looks like Saturday morning chores start right here.”
A few minutes later, as I was washing off the kitchen countertops, I heard the familiar “thump ... thump ... thump” of the basketball coming from outside. I glanced out of the kitchen window and saw Marcus and Caleb were playing basketball. Frustrated, I knocked on the window. When the boys looked up, I reminded them, “Come and do the chores!”
“OK, just five more minutes.” Marcus shouted. “Sure. Five more minutes.” I thought to myself and went back to do the housework.
Five minutes passed pretty soon. As I reminded them of the time, they put off again. “Just one more minute.” I shook my head as I began to replace the lid on the garbage container. Then a flash of white on the inside of the black plastic lid caught my attention.

應(yīng)用文
Have a healthy lifestyle
As we all know, health is very important. Only when we are healthy can we study w ell and enjoy life.
However, many teenagers don't pay any attention to their health, especially during the holiday. And they spend too much time watching TV, playing games and chatting on the Internet all night, which is bad for their health. First, this may make them get near-sighted. Besides, their bodies become much weaker. Thirdly, they will lose the chance to communicate with others face to face as they never go out, which may have a bad effect on their mental health.
In my opinion, they should spend less time in front of the TV or the computer. Go out to take some exercise, play some sports and visit some friends and have a healthy lifestyle.

續(xù)寫第一段
Paragraph 1: It was an envelope with the big word “Congratulations!” on the front. “The ticket ” I thought, a sudden joy flooding over me. I eagerly tore along one edge of the envelope and reached inside. It was a folded piece of paper, saying, “Let’s enjoy tonight’s game!” Unfolding it, I found a ticket inside, which made me be on cloud nine. Just then, the thumping sound outside stopped. I guessed they would come in for the chores. Sure enough, the footsteps neared. I turned in their direction, ready to give them a surprise.
續(xù)寫第二段
Paragraph 2: As the exhausted Marcus and Caleb entered the kitchen, I held up the ticket, the note and the envelope. “Surprise!” I grinned. Their eyes widened to see the ticket. Marcus mumbled, “Dad played favorites!” Caleb agreed, “He must have told you where it was.” “It was beneath the lid of the garbage container! Dad was fair because whoever did the chores would find it,” I replied. They looked at each other, regrets spreading across their faces. As Dad returned and saw my ticket, he praised, “The ticket is a reward for whoever is reliable.”Caleb and Marcus dropped their heads in shame.

Text 10
M: I fell into the habit of reading the newspaper every morning when I was a kid. Back then, there were only 2 daily newspapers--the morning edition and the afternoon edition. Nowadays, of course, many cities in the US have a morning paper. I'm not too picky about which newspaper I read, although when it comes to national newspapers, I'd prefer reading The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal rather than USA Today. Don't get me wrong: I'm not a news addict. I just like looking through the different sections, reading the headlines and checking out the classifieds. I usually skip the sports section and the funnies, and only look through the food and health sections, but I always read the front page and the editorial page. On weekends, I read the entertainment section for the movie listings and reviews. I'm sort of old-fashioned because I still like reading a printed newspaper. Sure, I also read some news online, (20))but nothing beats lounging around on Sunday mornings reading the big and thick paper.
