A recent study from the Food and Mood Centre at Deakin University in Australia has cast light on an alternative approach to managing mild to moderate depression. The research suggests that lifestyle therapy, which includes nutritional consulting and regular physical activity, can be as effective as traditional psychotherapy(心理療法) in reducing depressive symptoms.
In this study, 182 individuals diagnosed with non severe depression were randomly assigned to either lifestyle therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The lifestyle therapy group received guidance from a dietitian and an exercise physiologist. These professionals provided evidence based advice on improving nutrition, particularly through a modified Mediterranean(地中海) diet, and including regular physical exercise into daily routine. Meanwhile, the CBT group was led by psychologists who taught strategies to manage negative thoughts and behaviors, and were provided with workbooks and self help tools.
Both therapies were structured to match in frequency, duration, environment, and group size, ensuring a fair comparison. The results were promising: the lifestyle therapy group reported a 42% reduction in depression symptoms, whereas those who had traditional psychotherapy experienced a 37% reduction.
Although the study's sample size was small, indicating the need for further research, it underlines the importance of lifestyle changes in medicine. The researchers point out that while lifestyle changes are the cornerstone of other areas of medicine, such as heart diseases and diabetes, they have traditionally been seen as “add on” to mental health care. The study's findings suggest that this mindset may need to shift.
Importantly, the research does not say that lifestyle changes should replace professional mental health care. Instead, it recommends a comprehensive approach where both lifestyle therapy and traditional psychotherapy are available options. This would allow individuals to access the care that best suits their needs, potentially offering more effective treatment for those fighting with mild to moderate depression.

When visiting a doctor a few years from now, you can expect to be accompanied by a virtual version of yourself. This so called digital twin will be a working model of your body. Updated with your latest vital signs, it will help the doctor make an accurate diagnosis. It also opens the door for medicines and procedures designed specifically for you, greatly increasing recovery rates.
This might seem like fantasy, but the foundations are being laid. Researchers at Queen Mary University of London already use computer simulations(模擬) of the hearts of individual patients to evaluate different treatments for heart disorder. It would be far too risky to experiment this way on someone's real heart.
Digital twins are starting to pop up everywhere. The use of AI takes this much further, allowing virtual models to become more refined, and to both simulate and better activities in the real world. Concerns about the future may arise, as is seen in Morpheus from a 1999 sci fi film, where an intelligent machine dominates humanity through virtual reality.
Today's digital twins extend this process, making it easier for humans to tackle complex problems. They can act as virtual crystal balls, allowing people to look into the future, spot problems before they materialize and test wild ideas without real world consequences. For businesses, this should mean better designs and fewer costly mistakes. Digital twins offer the ultimate sandbox in which castles can be built and tested before being made real.
Could these virtual copies go wrong They might if they are programmed badly, or hacked into. Digital twins will handle mountains of data, some of it wrong, some of it prejudiced and much of it raising privacy concerns. Yet these risks are not specific to digital twins. They apply to all technologies, as they always have and always will. SpaceX Starship test launch in October 2024 marked another milestone for the world's largest and most powerful rocket. But additional data collected indicates Starship may be even more damaging to local communities and wildlife than critics previously feared.
According to datasets published, the 30 story tall Starship's 33 engines generate anywhere between 105 and 125 decibels(分貝) during its liftoff and landing, which is powerful enough to cause structural damage to buildings. Gee, a professor in Brigham Young University, detected those sound levels roughly six miles away. “This is the largest rocket ever built. It would stand to reason that it would also produce the highest level of noise among all rockets ever constructed，” Gee said.
Gee stresses that although researchers often measure noise using decibel levels, there are other measurements for sound. So he believes it's best to assess Starship's loudness by comparing it to other understandable quantities. On the quieter end, Starship's liftoff may sound similar to an average rock concert. At its loudest that noise is equal to hearing a close range gunshot.
According to environmental engineer Roesch, the “raw power output” from Starship's Super Heavy rockets has increased 30 percent since the FAA's initial risk review in 2019, an amount expected to grow over future launches. Roesch calls past assumptions by the FAA “not only factually laughable based on an understanding of basic physics” but contradictory to NASA's decades of Acoustic Modeling document. “No bird egg will survive that kind of impact. More deaths for animals are not accounted for in the FAA's risk assessment.”
Gee declines to offer a personal opinion regarding SpaceX's ongoing Starship launch schedule, and believes humanity's future may require space travel. In the meantime, he hopes the new data will inform policy and regulatory decisions. “We are talking about levels that people found unacceptable before，” he says.

M: No. I used to work in an advertising company, but now I only do some part time jobs, like writing and teaching. And I get paid for them.
