Do you know some people can“see” the world by using their ears
People need to make clicking sounds with their tongues. When the sound
waves hit an object, they come back as echoes(回聲). Then people listen to
the differences in the echoes and tell where the thing is in the dark so they can find t
heir way. This is called echolocation. By practicing this, blind people now can do many
things, including riding bikes alone or playing basketball! All these used to be imposs
ible for them without this skill.
In the past, scientists thought only blind people could learn echolocation. Accordi
ng to a research, after a person loses his sight(視力), there are some changes in his br
ain. So his brain works differently compared with the past. Scientists believed this was
the key to leaning echolocation. But now a new study shows that sighted people can
learn it too! In the study, both blind and sighted people were trained for 10 weeks, le
arning to make clicking sounds and use them to navigate in the dark. With practice,
both groups improved! They could find their position and direction to go.
What's the reason behind When scientists studied their brains after the 10-week
training, they found that the visual cortex(視覺皮層) became more active when people
listened. This happened to both blind and sighted people! Scientists guess this part of
brain doesn't just control what people see—— it also deals with information from oth
er senses, like hearing, smell and taste.
For blind people, echolocation is more than a skill that makes their lives easier. M
any said they felt more confident. Even more, this discovery shows how powerful huma
n's brains are. Even if you can't see, your brain can learn new skills, using sounds to he
lp you“see” the world!

Have you ev er interviewed a grandparent If you haven't, why not try one during
the holidays
Doing an interview with older people helps you get to know them better. 36 By
asking them about their life, you can find out how they lived, what they learned at sch
ool and so on. They must have interesting stories to tell. 37
To begin with, ask your grandparents if they’ d like to be interviewed, and then arr
ange(安排) a date or time. 38 However, a conversation by phone is also fine if it's h
ard to meet up. You can take notes on what they say, or you can record the interview
so that you can't miss anything.
39 What are the important things in your life Are they pets, schools or friends
Use them as a basis to find out more about your grandparents’ life. There is no such t
hing as a silly question if it opens up a conversation.
During the interview, listen carefully and try not to interrupt too much. If you think
of some questions while they are talking, write them down to ask later.
When you finish your interview, you can turn it into a memory book. You can simp
ly write out the questions and answers. 40 Ask them if they have any photos you ca
n put in the book, or add some paintings of your own.
