John loved fairytales as a child and went on to study English literature at Oxford University. There, he joined a literary club with friends who shared his passion. However, World War I changed everything for him and his friends. During the Battle of the Somme, his unit suffered heavy losses, but John was sent home because he had trench fever, which saved his life. By the end of the war, many of his literary friends had not survived.
After the war, John became a professor at Oxford. Despite his academic responsibilities, he had a strong desire to write his own fiction. Inspired by fairytales, he began creating a grand mythology for England. However, when he tried to publish this extensive work, publishers rejected it, finding it too long and complicated.
In addition to his mythology, John entertained his children with bedtime stories, often making them up on the spot. One day, he wrote, “In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit.” This simple line led to the creation of The Hobbit, a children’s book that became very popular and made John Ronald Reuel Tolkien a well-known author.
Despite the success of The Hobbit, Tolkien never gave up on his grand mythology, which he named The Silmarillion. The United Kingdom is hosting the AI Safety Summit, bringing politicians, computer scientists and big AI company leaders to a site chosen for its symbolism: Bletchley Park, the birthplace of computing and code-breaking.
During World War II, a group of mathematicians, chess masters and other experts gathered at the Victorian country house 72 kilometers northwest of London to start a secret war against Nazi Germany. Their goal was to break a set of constantly changing codes produced by Nazi Germany’s Enigma machine. To do it, Bletchley Park’s wartime scientists — building on work done by Polish code-breakers — developed Colossus, the first programmable digital computer. Some historians say cracking the code helped shorten the war by up to two years.
“It has oversimplified its true contribution by describing Bletchley Park as a playground for Turing and other scientists.” said historian Chris Smith, author of The Hidden History of Bletchley Park. “Although it fits into the romantic idea that a group of smart men with a bit of wool and some yards of wire can win the war. In fact, almost 10,000 people worked at Bletchley Park during the war. Three quarters of them were women. It’s basically a factory... Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. When peace came, the code-breakers returned to civilian life and promised to keep secret about their wartime work. It was not until the 1970s that the work at Bletchley Park became widely known in Britain.”
In 1994, the site opened as a museum, after local historians banded together to prevent it from being pulled down to build a supermarket. It was restored to its 1940s appearance, complete with old typewriters, phones and cups — including the one tied to a heater in Hut 8, where Turing led the Enigma team.

Benjamin Franklin came across the phenomenon in 1736 when serving as a clerk to the Pennsylvania Assembly. A powerful member didn’t care for Franklin and threatened to make life miserable for him. What to do Instead of winning him over with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he could borrow a rare and valuable book the man owned. This request altered the man’s attitude and paved the way for their friendship. Franklin’s takeaway: “He that has once done you a kindness will be ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.”
Several studies have confirmed this. But how can we explain the Ben Franklin Effect Some psychologists refer to cognitive dissonance (失調). It’s difficult to hold two contradictory thoughts at the same time. It makes us uncomfortable. We resolve this tension by changing our mind. “I don’t like Joe, but I am doing him a favor,” we might think. “So maybe I do like him.”
While cognitive dissonance explains a lot, it alone doesn’t explain the Ben Franklin Effect. One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (親和的) motive that the requests convey. That is, we humans want to maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve this is by doing favors for others. This explains a lot about altruistic behavior. We like being useful and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to do so. It’s in our genes.
Yet there is much we still don’t know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally across cultures Is there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable Asking to borrow a book is one thing; asking to borrow a car is another.

The Hardest Novel I’ve Ever Read
For the last three months, I have glared at its fat heavy form on my floor with a vague sense of personal failure. I have opened Ulysses twice, determined to finish it, and managed to get all the way to page 46. ____36____

There are a few other “worthy” works of literature I have yet to read, including Infinite Jest and War and Peace. ____39____ I really want to love Ulysses. I feel deeply frustrated that I can’t finish it, all the while appreciating its uniqueness, weightiness and special “Joyceness.”
The English writer Virginia Woolf thought Ulysses was nonsense as she complained in her diaries about the pressure to finish reading it. By contrast, Vladimir Nabokov, the author who wrote Lolita expressed deep love for it. ____40____ I have read it similar to a long marriage (something unpleasant, big reward at the end), modern Jazz-fusion (an innovative genre) and boxing match with oneself (wanting to punch yourself in the face), which is how I felt by page 46.

The museum stays open later than most museums — from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm, with the last admission being 10:00 pm.
