That summer, I had my first selection test and later, the name list of the qualified candidates was posted on a noticeboard in the hallway. The other students ran to the wall and searched for their names on the list. Then, some screamed in excitement while some slipped away angrily.

The explosion of progress in AI in recent months has surprised even the scientists and engineers who specialize in applying AI to real-life tasks. Several big companies started amazing new programs in a short time, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Bing and Google’s Bard. "A few years ago I never would have imagined we would advance this far this soon," says Zhe Jiang, a University of Florida researcher who studies applications of AI. Here are some examples of AI applications.
In April, a study published in Nature showed that an AI program was as good as or better than human experts at spotting heart problems in patient ultrasound （超聲波） images. That is to say, AI is able to match or go beyond human doctors at catching cancers and other disorders by scanning images and tissue samples.
Some drug companies are already relying heavily on AI to help find promising new drugs. For example, PsychoGenics, a company specializing in drugs for mental disorders, is improving on the inefficient, inexact and costly process of testing new mental drugs on mice, which typically takes five years. By using AI instead of lab staff to observe the effects of new drugs on mice, the company can test more drugs with greater accuracy at a tenth the cost and two years faster.
With 56 million Americans over 65, the high cost and short supply of eldercare workers, eldercare robots have already stepped in. Without using the recent Al advances, robots already watch over seniors with electronic eyes, fetch small items, answer questions. Some of them can already start conversations with seniors, help them recall what happened, and then report the results to family members. Soon, the power of such devices to interact with people will improve greatly. "Caregiving and companion robots equipped with the latest AI can provide ‘empathy’," says Forrester’s Curran. "They can tell the difference between a senior who is searching through a drawer, and one who is struggling to open a drawer," he explains.

Scientists have recently discovered the world’s largest known field of sea grass. They did it using videos shot by some extraordinary helpers. The work should help protect the sea grass, and also shows a powerful way to explore the ocean.
As a shelter for many sea creatures, sea grasses are flowering plants that normally grow in shallow waters near coasts. They grow in thick fields, known as seagrass meadows（海草床）, which help clean the ocean water. More importantly, they are called "ocean lung". They help in the fight against the climate crisis. That’s because they store huge amounts of carbon—the major source of global warming. Damaging these seagrass meadows can release this pollutant again, making things worse.
Considering the urgent need to protect seagrass meadows, scientists are eager to know about their size and number. However, the meadows can be hard to spot from above, either because the water is too deep or not clear enough. And the ocean is so huge that it’s hard to study them by diving. So scientists decided to have tiger sharks help the research.
Tiger sharks are inborn fast swimmers, and spend a lot of time in seagrass meadows. Between 2016 and 2020, the researchers attached cameras and other trackers to the fins of seven tiger sharks, and then let them go again. The cameras were designed to fall off after hours and float to the surface. Tracking signals helped find the floating cameras and collect the videos the sharks had taken while traveling for miles. Moreover, other tools were used, including satellite images, as well as images taken by divers and boats.
Putting all this information together, the scientists learned that the waters around the Bahamas are home to the largest seagrass meadow ever discovered. And the meadows cover at least 25,500 square miles, and could be as large as 35,500 square miles.
Different from previous studies, the program discovers how useful large underwater animals can be in helping to learn more about life under the sea. Oliver Shipley, a scientist from the team, says animals like tiger sharks are going to take us to new places that we didn’t know existed.

M：Two missing notebooks belonging to the scientist Charles Darwin were secretly returned to the Cambridge University Library recently.
Charles Darwin’s ideas about evolution completely changed the way scientists understand the natural world. Mr. Darwin began to develop his ideas after visiting the Galapagos Islands. He recorded his ideas in a series of notebooks labeled with letters of the alphabet.
The Cambridge University Library had several of Mr. Darwin’s notebooks. The two that were missing were kept in a small box, and were last seen in 2000, when they were taken out to be photographed. In 2001, some noticed that the box was missing. The library made a huge effort to find the books.
Jessica Gardner was the librarian behind the push to get the notebooks back. But even she could never have expected the way in which the notebooks were returned: in a pink gift bag with a note that said “Librarian, Happy Easter, X”. Jessica Gardner told The New York Times, “ I still feel shaky. It;s really hard to express how happy I am.”
After the police had examined the package, library workers were able to carefully study the notebooks. They were pleased to learn that the notebooks were in good shape. They weren’t damaged and they didn’t miss any pages.
