People often take the ability to communicate for granted but when you grow up with a sibling who is nonverbal, it changes the way you look at the world.
Archer Calder is a high school student from Utah. His sister Della, two years younger than him, has a rare genetic condition called Bainbridge-ropes syndrome. Even though Della isn’t able to speak, he and her brother are very close. Two years ago, Archer was searching online for an ape that might help Della express her needs, wants, likes, and dislikes.
However, he found that the available alps were too expensive, and didn’t offer everything he was looking for. Since Archer has always loved coding and computer programming, he decided to make his own ape. Apart from that, Archer was determined to make his ape better than the rest, completely open source, and free. That’s how Freespeech was born.
Archer said he decided to help his sister communicate because he wanted to hear her thoughts, but he also had a deeper reason. Growing up, he had a stutter(口吃)that kept him from expressing himself. It took him four years of speech therapy to overcome the difficulty, and the feeling of not being able to get his words out suck with him.
Free speech refers to the augmentative and alternative communication(AAC)that helps people communicate by pressing buttons that represent words. Users like Della can make sentenced by pressing multiple buttons in a sequence. It opens up a whole new world of communication for people who are nonverbal. Now Della can communicate like anybody else, through the iPad.
Archer first put it on TikTok, and the response was so positive that he continued sharing it on Git Hub, where experienced programmer helped beef it up. Archer said even if Free speech could only help one person, his sister, all the time and effort he put in was worth it.
24. What do we know about Archer
A. He gets along well with Della. B. He likes collecting electronic device.
C. He has the same physical condition as Della. D. He works part-time as a computer programmer.
25. What does Archer probably think of the available alps online
A. Disappointing. B. Surprising. C. Interesting. D. Inspiring.
26. What is Archer’s deeper drive to design Free speech
A. His enthusiasm for computer programming. B. His willingness to help his sister.
C. His high expectation of success. D. His early experiences.
27. How do users apply Free speech to expressing the information
A. By pushing buttons representing different words. B. By uploading their voice into it.
C. By spelling important keywords. D. By learning gesture from it.

Parrots live extremely long partly due to their relatively large brains, an international team of researchers has discovered. Simeon Smeele, a doctoral student at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, led the study, the results of which were published in March in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
When it comes to lifespan (壽命), birds truly stand out. Lifespan tends to increase with an animal’s body size, roughly speaking. Thus, the bigger the animal, the longer they live. But a bird tends to live much longer than a comparably-sized mammal (哺乳動物). One theory is that birds’ ability to fly means they are less at risk from the animals that kill them, which reduces their risk of being eaten, decreases stress, and frees up bodily resources for growth.
And among birds, parrots are the aging champions. The confirmed longest living bird was Cookie, a Major Mitchell’s cockatoo (a species of parrot), who lived at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois for all but one of his 83 years. Though cockatoos often weigh around a pound, they usually live for four decades. Most of the other 398 parrot species also live longer than other birds of similar size.
What sets parrots apart In the new research, Smeele and his colleagues gathered data on over 130,000 individual parrots held in more than 1,000 zoos, representing 217 species. Through this data, they created reliable estimates of the average lifespan for each species. They next searched for a link between each species’ lifespan and its relative brain size and found a clear, positive correspondence. Parrot species with larger brains relative to their body size lived longer than species with smaller brains.
“This supports the idea that in general larger brains make species more flexible and allow them to live longer,” Smeele said in a statement. “For example, if they run out of their favorite food, they could learn to find something new and thus survive.” He added, “All parrots have relatively large brain sizes compared to most other birds.”
Researchers have previously shown that, when trained, some parrots can recognize and understand objects, colors, and shapes, and even speak with an impressive vocabulary. They can even match five-year-old humans on basic tests of intelligence.
28. What may cause birds’ long life
A. Their big body size. B. Their ability to fly.
C. Their less adventurous nature. D. Their slow-paced lifestyle.
29. What do we know about parrots according to the text
A. They outlive other similar-sized birds.
B. They live longer in the zoo than in the wild.
C. They have an average lifespan of four decades.
D. They live in relatively less competitive environments.
30. What does the underlined word “correspondence” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Goal. B. Evidence. C. Difference D. Connection.
31 What does the author want to stress with the example in Paragraph5
A. Parrots find it hard to survive nowadays.
B. Bigger brains give parrots more adaptability(適應性).
C. Parrots like to discover new things by nature.
D. Bigger brains aid parrots with their social ability.
D
For many people, breakfast — often called the most important meal of the day — is also the day’s least-exciting meal. Foods at breakfast are typically simple, quick, and easy to prepare and eat. And when people find a breakfast option they like, they generally stick with it, day after day, scientists have found.
When researchers evaluated the daily eating habits in thousands of U. S. And French study subjects, they saw that people repeatedly ate the same thing for breakfast and were happy to do so. By comparison, when those people sat down to have lunch or dinner, they expected greater variety and wanted a more pleasurable experience from their meals.
Researchers analyzed data in which a group of l, 275 American volunteers and a group of 2, 624 French volunteers reported what they ate for different meals to find patterns in meal experiences. They discovered that in both groups, 68 % of the participants ate the same breakfast at least twice in one week, and French people did so even more often than Americans did. By comparison, just 9 % of the people repeated a dinner they had already eaten and this repetition was higher for the American participants than for the French participants. The researchers then proposed that psychological (心理的) factors could also map onto circadian rhythms (晝夜節律) to further push people toward certain meal choice. Early in the day, when energy levels are higher, people tend to make practical choice. This makes it more likely that they’d be guided by practicality over pleasure when eating breakfast and would therefore be satisfied with a meal choice that they don’t have to think about too much. And it would be more possible for them to find one breakfast they like and then eat the same thing over and over again, according to the study.
But as the day progresses, and a person’s energy increased and decreased, the importance of practical goals reduces. Pleasure-sacking becomes more important, and a person would then be more likely to seek variety in tastes and texture.
However, even though culture, biology, and psychology make it seem natural to seek practical goals for breakfast, by consciously introducing variation into weekday breakfasts, breakfast can become much more enjoyable, which can help set a more positive tone for the rest of the day.
32. What did the researchers find in their study
A. People have realized the benefits of eating breakfast.
B. People think it hard to find their favorite breakfast.
C. People usually spend a lot of time on cooking.
D. People tend to repeat their breakfast option.
33. Which method did the researchers most likely use to collect data
A. Making surveys. B. Performing experiments.
C. Working with local restaurants. D. Observing participants’ daily diets.
34. What did the researchers conclude from people’s circadian rhythms
A. Eating regularly contributes to good health.
B. People’s attitudes towards breakfast vary throughout the day.
C. People’s mood is the decisive factor in choosing their breakfast.
D. Energy changes throughout the day greatly affect people’s food choices.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. The Significance of Breakfast in Our Daily Life
B. Breakfast Habits: Why We Repeat
C. Differences in Meal Choices between Americans and French
D. The Influence of Circadian Rhythms on Our Eating Patterns

8-year-old Evan was standing by the sidewalk when he noticed Mrs. Carter opening her shop again.
Several days ago, when Evan was passing by her store, he saw a closed sign on the store’s door. When the shop remained closed for not just two days, Evan was worried he’d never be able to get his “dream job”.
85-year-old Mrs. Carter was a woman selling flowers for a living and Evan had befriended her when he helped her cross the street one day.
Now seeing her again, Evan ran up to her and greeted her. “Can I help you today, Evan Do you want flowers ” Mrs. Carter asked. Evan smiled, “I’m looking for a job! Can you please hire me ”
“A job ” the elderly lady laughed, thinking Evan was too little for that. But Evan proudly replied he knew many things, like making sandwiches and helping his mom get grocery bags from the car. Mrs. Carter laughed and asked Evan how much money she would have to pay him if she hired him.
Evan shook his head. “All I want is a big bouquet (花束) for my mom. Her name is Stacey and her birthday is one week away. Mom says we should work hard for what we want. I want to work hard for that bouquet. Can you hire me ” Evan asked. Mrs. Carter was impressed and nodded.
Then for a whole week, Evan would come to Mrs. Carter’s store in the evenings and help her, and having Evan around relieved Mrs. Carter’s boredom while she was working. Some customers thought Evan was lovely and entertaining, so they bought more flowers. Mrs. Carter’s business became better.
A week later, on Evan’s last day on the job, Mrs. Carter was emotional. They had grown close for working together, and Evan had become like a grandchild to her. While making a huge bouquet for Evan’s mother, Mrs. Carter secretly placed one envelope into the bouquet. The envelope contained $200. When handing him the bouquet, she said, “Will you come to see me someday, Evan I’d be delighted to have you here.”
“I will!” Evan smiled and waved goodbye to Mrs. Carter.
