I must have always known reading was very important because the earliest things I can remember are about books. There was not one night when Mom didn’t read me a storybook by my bedside. I was greatly interested in the fun way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend (假裝) to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with the easiest things and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl who didn’t start school, I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was about facts. I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests. I liked facts. I didn’t enjoy reading novels. I thought anything abstract (抽象的) left too much room for argument.
Yet, since I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is not any more, I find by opening a novel I can leave behind my worries and problems and enter into an amazing world where I am a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don’t have to write down what happened or the writer’s writing skills. I just read to relax.
We are taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human understanding. Reading keeps us learning and growing.

What’s the most important thing you need to live on Without water, humans, plants and animals cannot live. NASA scientists have been studying Mars (火星) to see if humans could make a home there in the future. So the first thing they must look for is water.
Well, after years of studies, NASA scientists have found that there is water on the planet! But you would not want to drink it. The water would be too salty for humans to drink, but this is a step in the right direction.

Lu Xun is famous as the father of modern Chinese literature (文學). He also has achievements in other fields, for example, arts. No wonder Chairman Mao Zedong once called him “the sage (圣人) of modern China”.
The writing of Zhou Shuren, commonly known by his pen name Lu Xun, is still widely read, and several of his works are in the textbooks (教材) of China’s public schools.
As one of the leaders of the New Culture Movement (1915-1923), Lu Xun is known for his great works showing people the old society of his time.
Take the story From Baicao Garden to Sanwei Study (1926) for example. The writer wrote about his youth from his playground Baicao Garden to his school the Sanwei Study, where a teacher taught him Chinese classics. He learned a lot and at the same time, it was in this strict traditional learning environment that he started to develop a deeper understanding of the society at that time.
His first short story, A Madman’s Diary became a sudden success when it came out in 1918 because he used colloquial (白話的) language. The story also interested people for its opinion on the downside of Chinese tradition.
Three years later The True Story of Ah Q came out. Lu Xun looked at the Chinese spirit at that time through the main character Ah Q. The phrase “the Ah Q spirit” is widely used even today.
