Shortly after Gustav Klimt, a renowned Austrian symbolist painter, died in 1918, a photograph was taken in
the artist’s studio. It shows two paintings, each displayed on an easel: Lady with Fan and the unfinished work The
Bride.
Lady with Fan was the last painting Klimt worked on during the year 1917. While most of his portraits paint
society ladies, Klimt probably chose an unknown model here. In the appealing presentation of this unidentified
woman, probably a dancer, she appears self-confident and assured. With her head held high, her shoulders exposed,
and her bare breast covered by a fan, she gazes out beyond the viewer.
Klimt began studying East-Asian art as early as the 1890s. Initially, he was primarily interested in Japanese
art, but in later years turned to Chinese, Korean, Persian, or Indian creative styles. Klimt adopted not only
decorative elements from the art of these countries but also compositional aspects. He studied typical color
schemes, for example, and transferred them into his paintings.
Lady with Fan was especially influenced by Chinese and Japanese art. Wrapped in a Chinese robe, the lady
hides behind a decorated fan. The yellow wallpaper in the background features several characteristic patterns that
are symbols of good fortune in East-Asian art: the Chinese phoenix(fenghuang), a crane, and the lotus flower.
Another reference to Japanese painting is the lady with a fan herself: bijin-ga, Japanese woodblock portraits of
beautiful celebrities.
Like Schiele, Kokoschka, and other artists from his circle, Klimt was a member of the Vienna Institute for
Cultural Research. Founded in 1915, the institution advocated a peaceful, equal world culture and rejected the idea
of the cultural superiority of the West, a concept widespread at the time. Klimt’s paintings convey his belief:
European and Asian pictorial traditions are brought together in equal measure to form a harmonious symbiosis(共
生).
4. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. Details of Lady with Fan. B. Appearance of the painter.
C. Recommendation of a model. D. Comparison of two styles.
5. What can we infer about Gustav Klimt according to the passage
A. Lady with Fan was his greatest work.
B. He showed little interest in western art.
C. He was familiar with East-Asian cultural elements.
D. He applied various techniques of western art to all his works.
6. What message do Gustav Klimt’s paintings convey
A. Promoting modern art. B. Protecting western cultures.
C. Strengthening social bonds. D. Appealing for culture equality.
7. Where is this passage most likely from
A. An art journal. B. A science magazine.
C. A news report. D. A travel guide.

Gratitude is a powerful tool for transforming negative attitudes and fostering a more positive outlook on life.
Rooted in the simple act of recognizing and appreciating the good in our lives , gratitude has profound
psychological, emotional, and social benefits.
Gratitude can significantly improve mental health. When individuals focus on what they are thankful for, they
tend to less dwell on negative thoughts and feelings. Studies have shown that practicing gratitude can decrease
symptoms of being depressed and anxious. This shift in focus can help reframe one's mindset, promoting a more
positive and resilient outlook. Emotionally, gratitude fosters a sense of well-being and contentment. By
acknowledging the positive aspects of life, people can avoid feelings of envy, resentment, and regret. This
emotional shift can lead to increased happiness and satisfaction. Furthermore, gratitude helps individuals build
emotional strength, enabling them to better cope with stress and adversity.
On a social level, gratitude strengthens relationships. Expressing appreciation to others enhances social bonds
and fosters a sense of community. When people feel valued and acknowledged, they are more likely to
reciprocate(回報(bào)), creating a positive cycle of kindness and support. This can lead to deeper, more meaningful
connections with others.
Integrating gratitude into our life on a daily basis is relatively simple but requires consistency. Keeping a
gratitude journal, where one writes down things they are thankful for each day, is a practical way to cultivate this
habit. Another effective practice is expressing gratitude directly to others, whether through a heartfelt note, a verbal
“thank you”, or a small act of kindness.
Most importantly, scan your thoughts. Do they showcase negativity or scarcity If so, stop. Consider
something for which you are grateful in that moment. That thought will begin a shift in your awareness. Do it
again. By the third grateful thought, you will likely have many more that naturally follow. You have now shifted
your thinking from negative to positive, and as you stay in that flow, your mood will shift too. Gratitude is a simple
yet powerful practice, which holds the potential to transform lives and cultivate a more positive, fulfilling
existence.
8. Which is NOT one of the benefits of performing gratitude
A. Improved mental health. B. Increased financial stability.
C. Enhanced emotional condition. D. Strengthened personal interaction.
9. What does the underlined phrase “dwell on” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Run into. B. Protest against.
C. Reflect on. D. Settle for.
10. What is a suggested method to carry out gratitude in daily life
A. Noting down a thankfulness diary. B. Giving away delicate notes.
C. Writing down detailed thoughts. D. Focusing on small acts.
11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. People should stop considering things when feeling negative.
B. People should never switch to negative thinking flow.
C. The negative thoughts will naturally follow positive thoughts.
D. The practice of gratitude could generate content feelings.

Nearly a year ago, NASA announced that a rock spotted on Mars by its Perseverance rover contained some of
the best signs yet that ancient microbial (微生物的) life may have once existed on the Red Planet. The rock
provides clear evidence for water, organic matter, and chemical reactions that could provide an energy source,
Laurie Leshin, director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which operates Perseverance, posted on the social
media platform X. “This is the kind of discovery you hope for — where mind-bending observations make your
heart beat just a little faster,” she added.
Catch your breath, everyone. There are a lot of maybes that won’t be resolved anytime soon, if ever. And
there’s a long history of Martian rocks getting some of the life on our planet a little too excited.
Perhaps the most famous Martian rock is Allan Hills 84001, a meteorite (隕石) discovered in Antarctica. In a
1996 Science paper, researchers suggested it held nannofossils (納米化石) of bacteria. The news spread far and
wide and even led to a congratulatory speech by then-President Bill Clinton. The debate continues, but most
researchers today believe the fossil like features arose without life. Similar news has followed rocks found by
earlier Mars rovers, including Curiosity, which, with its onboard chemical lab, has detected all sorts of organic
molecules during its long trip in Gale crater.
Perseverance lacks such an onboard lab. Its job is to drill rocks and put them in capsules that could eventually
be returned to Earth for detailed study. Compared with Curiosity’s, its instruments are more limited. Still, they
provided enough information to be excited about the Cheyava Falls rock it just drilled.
Running through the rock are white veins of calcium sulfate — minerals that spark out of water. Scans by a
rover instrument also indicate the rock contains organic compounds. Such carbon-bearing molecules are essential
building blocks of life, but they can also be formed by nonbiological processes. Of most scientific significance
were mineral “l(fā)eopard spots” in the rock, millimeter-size whitish spots ringed by black material, which seem to
contain iron and phosphate (磷酸鹽). On Earth, such spotting can form when organic molecules react with
hematite, or rusted iron. These reactions, in turn, can fuel microbial life.
Although there is no doubt about the scientific value of the new discovery, the immediate announcement about
the rock by JPL has raised some eyebrows.
12. What do we know about NASA’s discovery by its Perseverance on Mars
A. A rock spotted contains ancient microbial life.
B. Concrete evidence of organic substances is found.
C. Observations demonstrated are not exciting.
D. Chemical reactions can provide a new energy source.
13. What was the significance of the Allan Hills 84001 meteorite
A. It unlocked the first rock to show signs of life on Mars.
B. It revealed the likely existence of nannofossils of bacteria.
C. It led to the finding of the existence of living bacteria.
D. It confirmed the first meteorite discovered on Mars.
14. Why is the Cheyava Falls rock vital to scientists
A. It contains high amounts of minerals. B. It indicates organic compounds.
C. It fuels microbial life. D. It carries mineral “l(fā)eopard spots”.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. NASA found possible signs of life on Mars
B. A heart-beating discovery attracted public attention
C. NASA sent another rover to explore Mars
D. A debate-heated discovery clarified ancient life

How did you sleep last night If you tossed and turned, or stared at the clock, you’ll probably feel less-than-
refreshed. But that tired feeling may not just be down to the quantity, or perhaps even the quality, of your sleep.
___16___ Because what you tell yourself the next day about how you slept, and about how much it matters, can
make a difference to how you perceive your tiredness.
___17___ Decades of research has largely agreed that, in fact, psychological processes are likely the main
driver behind insomnia (失眠): our sleep is disrupted when we’ re in a lifted state of psychological arousal, which
often results from our thoughts, beliefs, and how we focus our attention.
Still, many of us would assume that, if we feel tired, it’s because we slept poorly.___18___ So, if you struggle
with poor sleep, what can you do All of the usual tips apply, experts say — for example, practicing good sleep
habits, which typically includes strategies like avoiding alcohol and caffeine and keeping a regular bedtime.
But beyond that, try to adopt a less black-and-white approach to sleep. You might remind yourself of times
that you didn’t sleep perfectly but still had a good day, for example. ___19___ That is, to consider it takes a long
process to adjust instead of assuming that because you’ve previously had a bad day after a poor night’s sleep, that is
what will always happen.
Relevant research also suggests focusing on things that boost your mood in the morning could also go a long
way towards improving your evaluation of how you slept. Understanding more about how sleep actually works
can ease your nerves. ___20___
A. It can also depend on your mindset.
B. Adopting a beginner’s attitude can also help.
C. Assume it is based on people’s sleep performance.
D. Knowing what happened could have an influence, too.
E. Then, multiple awakenings during night wouldn’t be so frustrating.
F. The idea that mindset directly affects our sleep isn’t new.
G. Toss and turn all night, say, feeling exhausted in the morning.

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon when a family of four decided to explore the woods near their home. With
their camping equipment, they embarked on a much-anticipated trip in the nearby woods, full of excitement.
Upon arrival, the parents set up the tent while their two children, Max and Emma, wandered around and looked
for fun. They were especially thrilled, laughter echoing through the woods. Max, the big brother, proposed to go
deeper into the woods and explore more. Emma followed.
As they walked along the narrow path, chatting and laughing, they suddenly heard a strange noise coming from
a thick bush. Feeling a little bit scared, Emma came closer to her brother. Then, they noticed another sound. Even
with the scare and nervousness, curiosity got the better of them. They carefully approached the source of that sound.
To their big surprise, they found a small, injured fox lying there, making some heartbroken sounds. Taking a
closer look, Max found that one of her legs was bleeding, and she looked weak and scared. Emma’ s heart ached at
the sight of the poor creature. “We can’t just leave her here. Let’s do something,” she begged, looking determined.
Max hesitated for a while and nodded in agreement.
Emma suggested coming back to the camping site and called their parents for help. But they worried the fox
could be attacked by other bigger animals. Then Max decided to take the fox back. They knew they had to be
extremely careful, not scaring the fox and not causing further injury.
Slowly, Max made his first attempt. He took off his coat and tried to gently place it over the fox. The fox, sensing
Max’s approach, struggled to run away but failed due to her bleeding leg. Max did another try. This time, he
succeeded. He covered the fox carefully with his coat. The fox still whined(哀鳴) sadly, but didn’t run away. With
great care, they lifted the fox and carried her back.

【答案】Dear Kalvin,
I’m writing to share with you a voluntary community service last Sunday. Organized by our school’s
Volunteers’ Society, the activity was aimed at assisting the elderly in a community nearby.
We made thoughtful plans in advance, and then passionately plunged ourselves into a series of voluntary
activities for the elderly, including cleaning up their houses, running trivial errands and accompanying them in the
form of chatting or singing.
From my perspective, this activity binds individuals and promotes harmonious community relationship.
Additionally, devoting our time to voluntary community service enables us to empathize with others and become
sensitive to other people’s needs, leading to personal fulfillment and a better living environment.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】
Once they arrived, they quickly called their parents. Their parents rushed over, shocked but impressed by their
children’s kindness. The father carefully examined the fox’s wound and said they needed to clean and bandage it
immediately. The mother fetched the first-aid kit. They worked together gently. Max and Emma watched nervously,
hoping the fox would be okay. After the treatment, they made a small, warm nest for the fox near the tent. Over the
next few days, they took turns looking after her, feeding her small pieces of food and fresh water. The fox gradually
got used to them and stopped being so scared.
A few days later, the fox’s leg was fully healed. Max and Emma knew it was time to let her go back to her
natural habitat. They felt a bit sad but also happy for the fox. They carried her to the place where they had found her.
Gently, they put the fox down. The fox looked at them for a moment as if saying thank you, then ran into the woods.
Max and Emma watched until she disappeared. They realized that this experience not only taught them to be kind to
animals but also gave them a deeper understanding of the importance of co-existing with nature.
