Born in Scotland in 1859, Arthur Conan Doyle is a writer that every English literature lover will always remember. He is best known for creating detective Sherlock Holmes—one of the most classic characters in English novels.
During his lifetime, Arthur wrote several hundred works of all types like history, science fiction, drama…and a great number of other works as articles, poems, interviews, plays. They are on many kinds of subjects, such as war, crimes and politics.
It seems that Arthur inherited (繼承) the skill of storytelling from his mother. One day, when Jakey went outside to play, he found a hedgehog in a window well (窗井). It seemed that the hedgehog couldn’t get out.

Buck growled, and was surprised when the rope was pulled hard around his neck. He jumped at the man. The man caught him and suddenly Buck was on his back with his tongue out of his mouth. For a few moments he was unable to move, and it was easy for the two men to put him into the train.

During his lifetime, Arthur wrote several hundred works of all types like history, science fiction, drama…and a great number of other works as articles, poems, interviews, plays. They are on many kinds of subjects, such as war, crimes and politics.
It seems that Arthur inherited (繼承) the skill of storytelling from his mother. When he was a child, he faced many difficulties and was funded (資助) by the wealthy members of his family for his studies. During his stay in the boarding school (寄宿學(xué)校), he realized that he had a gift for storytelling. Here, younger students admired him because they were enthralled by his stories. After Arthur returned to his home from the boarding school, his father was sent to a mental hospital (精神病院) and later in 1880 Arthur wrote a story based on it called “The Surgeon of Gaster Fell”.
Arthur chose to go to the medical field and learned to be a surgeon in the University of Edinburgh. In this place, Arthur met a person who influenced and encouraged him to become a writer—one of his teachers Dr Joseph Bell. Dr Bell was good at observing and detecting. These qualities were later found in the personality of the well-known detective Sherlock Holmes who first appeared in his novel in 1887.
The great writer died on July 7, 1930. He was found lying on the ground in his garden. He has left people a legacy (遺產(chǎn)) of literature and is still alive through his books and stories.

Rain or shine, Peter O’Neill always competes in the triathlon (鐵人三項(xiàng)運(yùn)動) of his town. The 72-year-old has competed in every triathlon in the event’s 40-year history. He was part of the group that came up with the idea in the 1980s.
“I used to jog around town,” Mr. O’Neill said. “I came into contact with an Olympian, David Power, and Dave had a hotel up here. A few of us got together and we discussed it and got it going in October, 1983.”
The then 31-year-old suggested one of the group should compete. “Everyone else could either ride a bike or run, but I was the only one who could swim,” he laughed. “But I was happy to give it a go.”
In the beginning, more than 220 athletes took part in the event, including 79 individual competitors and 48 teams. These days it’s a five-day festival—which includes 11 events in all—with more than 13,000 competitors.
Rebecca van Pooss, head of operations for the triathlon there, said the event Mr. O’Neill helped to start was now an international event. “It is the world’s largest Olympic-distance triathlon,” she said. “That’s something we’re very proud of.”
“Mr. O’ Neill’s efforts were inspiring. There are a couple of other athletes who have done 38, 39,” she said. “But Peter, he is the legend (傳奇)—it’s pretty amazing to have someone who’s done all 40 of our races.”
Mr. O’Neill trains year-round for the event, and enjoys the social side just as much as the physical benefits. “I’ve made so many friends… friends that I ride with and friends I swim with—it’s been wonderful,” he said. “When you’re in your 70s like I am, you’re quite happy to just do it because you know it beats the alternative (替代品), which is sitting around doing nothing.”

Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that trouble was coming for every big dog in California. Men had found gold in Yukon, and these men wanted big, strong dogs to work in the cold and snow of the north.
Buck lived in Mr Miller’s big house in the sunny Santa Clara Valley. There were large gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house, and a river nearby. In a big place like this, of course, there were many dogs. There were house dogs and farm dogs, but they were not important. Buck was the chief dog. He was born here, and this was his place. He was four years old and weighed sixty kilos. He went swimming with Mr Miller’s sons, and walking with his daughters. He carried the grandchildren on his back, and he sat at Mr Miller’s feet in front of the fire in winter.
But this was 1897, and Buck did not know that men and dogs were hurrying to north-west Canada to look for gold. And he did not know that Manuel, one of Mr Miller’s gardeners, needed money for his large family. One day, when Mr Miller was out, Manuel and Buck left the garden together. It was just an evening walk, Buck thought. No one saw them go, and only one man saw them arrive at the railway station. This man talked to Manuel, and gave him some money. Then he tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck.
Buck growled, and was surprised when the rope was pulled hard around his neck. He jumped at the man. The man caught him and suddenly Buck was on his back with his tongue out of his mouth. For a few moments he was unable to move, and it was easy for the two men to put him into the train.
When Buck woke up, the train was still moving. The man was sitting and watching him, but Buck was too quick for him and he bit the man’s hand hard. Then the rope was pulled again and Buck had to let go.
That evening, the man took Buck to the back room of a bar in San Francisco. The barman looked at the man’s hand and trousers covered in blood.
“How much are they paying you for this ” he asked.
“I only get fifty dollars.”
“And the man who stole him-how much did he get ” asked the barman.
“A hundred. He wouldn’t take less.”
“That makes a hundred and fifty. It’s a good price for a dog like him. Here, help me to get him into this.”
They took off Buck’s rope and pushed him into a wooden box. He spent the night in the box in the back room of the bar. His neck still ached with pain from the rope, and he could not understand what it all meant. What did they want with him, these strange men And where was Mr Miller
