I have been a fan of Italian traveler Marco Polo since childhood, which later led me to become a tour guide. Years of hiking have helped me stay healthy. Even at 75, I still have no need for reading glasses.About 20 years ago, my interest in China was started by a student from Beijing who stayed in my home. The connections we made and the friendships we developed made me more curious about China. Following that, I found myself interested in The Travels of Marco Polo, reading it over and over again to understand China through its descriptions. The description of the ancient Silk Road in the book attracted me deeply. In 2018, the idea of hiking along the ancient Silk Road came to me, which encouraged me to plan a journey covering 22, 000 kilometers from Venice to Beijing, passing through 15 countries in three to four years. At first, my children thought it was impossible. However, as they saw the details of my plan, they gave me their full support. My journey began on April 26, 2022. For more than two years, I experienced many challenges: bad weather, tiredness and lonely moments. I walked through mountains and waters, and crossed cities and villages in different countries. Along the way, I learned about the history, culture, and customs of each country I visited. As I explored the remains of the ancient Silk Road, I was shocked by the changes that our world has experienced.I also witnessed that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), continuing the spirit of the ancient Silk Road, has helped more and more people across different countries.Today, walking on the same “golden ancient route” with Marco Polo’s book in hand, I feel proud. Looking back on my journey, I want to tell friends of my age: Be brave in pursuing (追求) your dreams-nothing is impossible!38. What first made Vienna interested in China A. A book she read in childhood. B. A tour guide she met in Venice.C. A documentary about the Silk Road. D. A Chinese student staying at her home.39. Why did Vienna’s children finally support her travel plan A. They doubted its possibility. B. Marco Polo’s book attracted them,C. She prepared very carefully. D. The journey was well worth a visit.40. What can be inferred about Vienna’s journey A. It was a smooth hike through wonderful landscapes.B It was a shocking hike because of terrible conditions.C. It was a long trip witnessing the BRI’s influence.D. It was a meaningful trip with government’s support.41. What message does Vienna want to share A. Technology has changed history. B. Never give up on your dreams.C. Reading books is the best hobby. D. Keeping healthy is important.DWetlands are areas with water like lakes, rivers, and coasts. They help protect animals and plants, stop floods, and clean dirty water. They also help farmers grow rice and fish, and are important homes for birds that fly long distances. Sadly, wetlands are in danger worldwide.World Wetlands Day came from the Convention on Wetlands (濕地公約) signed in Iran. China joined the convention on July 31,1992. By the end of 2019, China had 57 wetland nature reserves listed as major wetlands for protection under the convention, covering a total of nearly 7 million hectares , as China has wetlands with 65.9 million hectares-10% of the world’s wetland areas, which comes fourth in the world. Some of Asia’s most important wetlands, such as Poyang Lake and Asia’s longest river, Yangtze River are in China. However, a WWF research showed China’s wetlands were seriously damaged by pollution, climate change and human activities like farming and building. So our government has been taking actions to return farmland to wetland and closing some fish farms. It was reported the 57 key Chinese wetlands increased by 2,479 hectares from 2020 to 2023. “The area of wetlands in China has become larger, growing by 202,600 hectares and making a great contribution to water quality and environmental protection. Birds like the Siberian crane are returning to wetlands like Poyang Lake. Water in protected wetlands is now 40% cleaner than 10 years ago. China has been creating national wetland parks. Between 2016 and 2020, China created 201 national wetland parks and in 2022alone, 58 new wetland parks were created. By 2025, China has had 3700 wetland protection areas, including 903 national wetland parks,” said an official from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.China is continuing to make stronger laws to protect wetlands. Some major projects on wetland protection will be carried out in some major areas, such as Yangtze River and the Beijing - Tianjin -Hebei province.42. However, we can learn something valuable from every failure (失敗). This may help us succeed in the future. So we must know how to be a good loser. We must not be afraid of losing. When we lose, just take it with a smile and look on the bright side of it. Failure can’t be avoided in our life. Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb (燈泡).When he was asked how he felt, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times but had learned 10,000 things which didn’t work. We must know that history is full of examples of men and women who achieved success although they failed many times.Losing is not very disgraceful. We must accept our failure and learn to take advantage of it. Remember that it can be helpful. Take action to walk out of it. When we lose, think about what we did and how we can improve. If someone else can help, we’ll be lucky enough. Maybe he or she has been through the same experience before. Many people enjoy helping others solve problems. This can save us a lot of time in learning how to avoid the same mistakes in the future. We should face our failure when we lose. There is only one winner in every competition. Some win, while some lose. That is a usual way of life. If we offer the winners our congratulations (祝賀) and share in their happiness, we won’t feel sorry for our failure. In a word, being a good loser will help us to succeed in life. It might be painful at the beginning, but there are many advantages. Good losers set examples to us, and most importantly, they finally win.56. It’s time to say goodbye to my dear school. I would like to say something about my school life in the past three years.Firstly, I developed a strong interest in basketball. Joining the school team not only improved my skills but also taught me teamwork. Besides, I actively took part in different activities, such as the English speech contest and charity sales, which made me confident. Over the years, I’ve made great progress in both study and communication. For example, I learned to express my ideas clearly in class discussions. Moreover, I’m grateful to my friends and teachers. My friends always cheered me up when I felt stressed, and my teachers patiently guided me through challenges. Their support made my school life meaningful.Although saying goodbye is hard, I feel lucky to have such unforgettable memories. I’ll remember and value every moment forever.
