Mark Bertram, 46, lost the tips of two fingers at work in 2018 when his hand became trapped in a fan belt. “It's life-changing but it's not life-ending,” he says. “Doing work is harder now. Everything is just a little different.”
After two surgeries and occupational therapy, Bertram decided to make light of his condition by asking Eric Catalano, a tattoo (紋身) artist, to create fingernail tattoos. The idea made everyone in the studio laugh—until they saw the final result. “The mood changed,” Catalano recalls from his Eternal Ink Tattoo Studio. “Everything turned from funny to wow.”
When Catalano posted a photo of the tattoos, a pair of fingernails that looked so real that no one could believe their eyes, he had no idea the image would eventually be viewed by millions of people around the world.
The viral photo pushed Catalano, 40, further into the world of paramedical (輔助醫療的) tattooing. Now people with life-altering scars come from as far away as Ireland to visit his shop. They enter Eternal Ink looking for the artistic healing they saw online. Using flesh-toned (肉色的) inks and a needle, Catalano transforms his clients' view of themselves.
Leslie Pollan, 32, a dog breeder in Oxford, was bitten on the face by a puppy in 2014. She underwent countless surgeries to correct a scar on her lip.
“Plastic surgery gave me no hope,” she says. “So I looked for other options.” She ultimately traveled six hours to meet with Catalano. He hid Pollan's lip scar, giving her back a piece of her confidence.“ You don't understand until you've been through it,” Pollan says. “It made me have a different look on life.”
Catalano performs up to eight reconstructive tattoos. While he charges $100 per regular tattoo, he doesn't charge for paramedical tattoos. “Financially, it doesn't make sense,” Catalano says. “But every time I see that emotion from my customers, I'm 100 percent sure this is something that I can't stop doing.”
4. What best describes people's attitude when first hearing of fingernail tattoos
A. Indifferent. B. Ridiculous.
C. Confident. D. Surprised.
5. What did Catalano do to help Leslie Pollan
A. He drew an artistic puppy.
B. He inked scars on her face.
C. He created a lip tattoo.
D. He performed plastic surgeries on her.
6. What can we infer from the passage
A. Cosmetic surgery is of no use.
B. Tattoos earn Mark Bertram a good fame.
C. Catalano is a kind and generous person.
D. Fingernail tattoos are popular around the world.
7. What could be the best title for the text
A. A Life-changing Event B. Miracle Tattoos
C. An Amazing Artist D. A Promising Business

More than a third of the world’s population lives in dry lands, areas that experience significant water shortages. Scientists at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a unique solution to help people in these areas access clean drinking water.
They developed a low-cost gel film (凝膠膜) that can pull water from the air in even the driest bining two simple ingredients, cellulose and konjac gum, the gel is inexpensive to produce. Just one kilogram of gel can absorb up to 6 liters of water in a dry climate. For those living in a climate with relative humidity (濕度), one kilogram of gel can collect up to 13 liters of water a day. As the gel is so inexpensive and easy to make, it may offer a way of providing drinking water to countries with water shortages.
Previously, researchers have harvested fresh water from fog and dew, but that only serves areas with high humidity. Other attempts at pulling water from desert air are typically energy-intensive and do not produce much. In fact, this gel is a vast improvement from previous water harvesting technologies. The maximum water harvested has been 5.87 liters in places with relative humidity. This new gel doubles this amount, uses no energy and is simple to operate and it can be made into a shape or size that best suits the user.
“This new work is about practical solutions that people can use to get water in the hottest, driest places on Earth,” said Guihua Yu, professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering. “This could allow millions of people without consistent access to drinking water to have simple, water generating devices at home that they can easily operate.”
“This is not something you need an advanced degree to use,” the paper’s lead author, Youhong Guo said. “It’s straightforward enough that anyone can make it at home if they have the materials.” Scientists are planning on making a thicker gel that will increase the yield, making this technology a practicable solution to drought.
8. What can we know about the gel film from paragraph 2
A. It can increase the humidity of the air.
B. It can harvest drinking water from the air.
C. It has been widely applied in desert areas.
D. It costs lots of money and energy to produce.
9. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The advantages of the new gel.
B. The process of producing the new gel.
C. The tough living conditions in dry regions.
D. The theory of water harvesting technologies.
10. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to
A. An advanced degree. B. An expensive material.
C. A water harvesting device. D. A non-stopping condition of drought.
11. What do scientists plan to do next
A. Develop a thicker gel. B. Raise money for further research.
C. Produce the gel in large quantities. D. Teach people to make the gel at home.

Some penguins (企鵝) adapt their calls to become more similar to their partners over time, an ability that was previously known in only a few species, including humans.
Luigi Baciadonna at the University of Turin, Italy, and his coworkers recorded African penguins from three different colonies (群體) over three years, and also observed the behavioral patterns of one of the colonies to see which penguins were partners or friendly.
They then analyzed specific vocal (聲音的) calls, which the penguins made when they were alone or trying to keep track of their friends. They compared four distinct vocal signatures such as the frequency of the calls. The signatures became more similar over time for penguins that were partners or in the same colony, and for penguins that heard more of each other’s calls.
This adaptation could make it easier for penguins to find their partners and friends in a colony. “Imagine that you are in a pub, you are with your friends and your environment is quite noisy,” says Baciadonna. “What you do is try to talk in a certain way so that your communication is more effective.”
The ability to adapt calls in response to the environment, known as vocal accommodation, is a key part of vocal learning, a more complex set of skills such as producing new sounds through learning. Identifying which species display vocal accommodation could provide clues for how vocal learning developed. Baciadonna and his team also propose that this accommodation could help with group harmony and social bonds between individual penguins.
The distance of penguins from humans on the evolutionary tree suggests that vocal accommodation could be common to many species, but a lot more data needs gathering first. “There could be a huge variety of different species that are able to adapt their calls slightly, but we don’t know that yet,” says Sara Torres Ortiz at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Munich, Germany.
12. What does the underlined word “signatures” mean in paragraph 3
A. Effects. B. Characteristics. C. Sources. D. Adjustments.
13. What is the intention of the quotes from Baciadonna in paragraph 4
A. To explain the reason why penguins adapt their calls.
B. To highlight the role communication plays in social life.
C. To prove humans’ ability to recognize each other’s voices.
D. To stress the difference between human and animal sounds.
14. What remains to be explored according to Sara Torres Ortiz
A. Whether penguins can promote group harmony.
B. Whether all species can adapt to the environment.
C. Whether more species display vocal accommodation.
D. Whether penguins and humans are similar in vocal learning.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. Vocal learning involves a complex set of skills.
B. Vocal accommodation helps build up social bonds.
C. Penguins produce similar sounds even in different colonies.
D. Penguins adapt their accents to sound more like their friends.
