When Wilson was 10 years old, he promised his mother that one day she would never again have to wash other people’s clothes for a living and he was going to start his own business and support her. His mother just nodded silently, knowing no member of their family had ever owned a business.
Years passed, but Wilson’s dream did not. After high school, Wilson joined the army, where his goal of one day owning a family restaurant began to take shape. He signed up for the food service school there and he became such an excellent cook that he was promoted to the officers’ dining hall.
After he left the army at 28, he worked as a police officer for the following fifteen years. When he felt he was in need of the business skills for his business, he took business classes at night in his off-hours. “I also saved every cent I earned as a police officer,” he recalled. “For ten years, I didn’t spend one cent — there were no movies, no vacations, and no trips.”
By 2013 with enough savings, Wilson decided to make his dream a reality. He opened his first restaurant. However, the first few months were a failure. Wilson quickly change his business strategy and once a week he offered his employees (雇員) classes in customer service and management. He encouraged them to develop personal and professional goals. He always stressed that the faster and more efficiently the employees served the customers, the more profitable that way would be.
Today, Wilson owns nine restaurants and employs over four hundred people. In the community, Wilson funded athletic teams and scholarships (獎學金) to get kids off the streets and into community centers and schools. Then his restaurants became profitable, earning much more than before. More importantly, Wilson paved the way for thousands of ordinary young people who are working to make their dreams a reality, helping their communities, and serving up hope.
24. Why did Wilson want to start his own business at first
A. To become a great cook. B. To help his mother economically.
C. To cheer his mother up. D. To set an example for his family.
25. What did Wilson focus on besides his major work in his 30s
A Plans for realizing his dream. B. Setting up business schools.
C. Preparations for enjoying life. D. Working as a police officer.
26. How did Wilson improve his restaurant after it failed
A. By increasing the number of his employees.
B. By cutting down the profits of his restaurant.
C. By offering his workers professional training.
D. By meeting customers’ needs as much as possible.
27. Which of the following can best describe Wilson
A. Easy-going and honest. B. Self-centered and curious.
C. Warm-hearted and wise. D. Strong-willed and helpful.

Scientists working in southwest England have found the earliest fossilized (變成化石的) forest known on the Earth, according to a new study. Dating back 390 million years, the fossils break the record held by a forest in New York state by 4 million years.
The fossilized trees, known as Calamophyton, look fairly similar to palm trees but had thin bodies. They didn’t have any leaves, but had twig-like (嫩枝樣的) structures covering their branches (樹枝). They would reach up to 2-4 meters tall and drop branches as they grew. The forest dates from 419 million to 358 million years ago, when life was moving onto land. The trees would have trapped sediment (沉積物) in their root systems, which helped hold riverbanks and coastlines in place.
The findings also uncovered the speed at which early forests developed. While the fossils in England are from a forest with just one type of tree, the previous oldest forest in New York state had a greater variety of species, such as vine-like trees that grew on the ground, despite living just 4 million years later. “Almost overnight, geologically speaking, you’ve got a lot more variety,” the first author Neil Davies said.
The trees also provided a habitat for invertebrates (無脊椎動物) thanks to the twigs that would drop on the ground. The team found evidence of footprints and tail drags left by these early animals, while scientists don’t know exactly what they were for a shortage of physical remains.
“The most exciting discovery comes from seeing, for the first time, these trees in the positions where they grew,” study co-author Christopher Berry said. “It is our first opportunity to look directly at the ecology of this earliest type of forest, to know the environment in which Calamophyton trees were growing, and to find out their effect on the sedimentary system.”
28. What does paragraph 2 mainly say about the Calamophyton trees
A. Their size and types. B. Their history and future.
C. Their appearance and function. D. Their fossilization causes and process.
29. What does Neil Davies want to tell us
A. The early forests developed at a rapid rate.
B. The former discovered forest has one type of tree.
C. The forest in New York had a slow growth process.
D. Four million years is a short time in geological history.
30. What can be inferred about the invertebrates
A. They lived in the trees. B. They lived on the forest floor.
C. They fed on the twigs of the trees. D. They pulled their tails looking for food.
31. What is Christopher Berry’s attitude to the discovery of the Calamophyton trees
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Calm. D. Positive.

A newspaper company in the US says it will start using artificial intelligence (人工智能) or AI technology to write short stories. The company recently announced a plan to use generative AI to add short pieces of information to the top of each story. The company adds it will test the system later this year. Human writers and editors will look at what the technology produces and decide whether it meets the company’s standards for publishing.
Renn Turiano is a top official of the newspaper company. He explained that AI technology can be useful to reduce boring jobs performed by journalists (新聞工作者). He noted that the newspaper company will test its AI system slowly before it is permanently used.
Some news organizations launched (推出) the technology-based materials too quickly and experienced problems. This included cases where AI systems created errors in stories. Turiano said, “We’re not making that mistake.”
Earlier this year, two publishers — Men’s Journal and CNET — had problems with AI created materials. In January, CNET reported that a number of stories written by AI had appeared on its website without being checked by humans. Many of the stories contained mistakes. In February, Men’s Journal published some AI-created stories on its website that also contained mistakes.
News organizations need to take their time with generative AI. It is advised that they should not use such tools to publish stories without any human involvement in the process.
The newspaper company recently announced that it was cutting 600 jobs. Some of the journalists still working there worry that AI will one day replace them. In early June, hundreds of the workers left their jobs for a short time to protest job cuts and low pay. The labor group that represents some of the journalists says the newspaper company’s use of generative AI is one of the main concerns. However, the newspaper company stresses the technology will not replace humans. Instead, it is designed to help an increasing number of employees be more effective and give them more time to do other valuable work. Journalists from the USA Today publication are examining test stories written by its generative AI system.
32. What does the underlined phrase “generative AI” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. AI that can keep editors company. B. AI that can produce some information.
C. AI that can monitor a company’s system. D. AI that can look after many human writers.
33. Why does the author mention Men’s Journal and CNET
A. To show AI can make errors. B. To show AI is a slow learner.
C. To show AI is a perfect writing tool. D. To show AI can work as well as humans.
34. What does the newspaper company expect of AI technology
A. It will cut more jobs. B. It will replace human workers.
C. It will benefit more employees. D. It will help increase journalists’ pay.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. AI Technology: Raising Employment Concerns
B. AI Technology: Testing Journalists’ Intelligence
C. US Newspaper Company: Launching a Management System
D. US Newspaper Company: Pushing Humans to Create stories

67. 閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構成一篇完整的短文。
It was may years ago. I graduated from college with a degree in education and found a full-time job as a class teacher in a middle school.
I’ve always remembered the wonderful teachers I had while growing up. They encouraged and praised their students, making learning a joyful experience. I was inspired by their kindness and devotion. I decided to follow their example.
A lesson at the beginning of a new semester left a deep impression on me. During teaching, I did my best to make each student feel seen and appreciated. I especially praised one boy’s math answer and another girl’s English essay. At first, the students seemed shocked by this treatment, but soon they became happy and active. And at the end of the day, a particularly shy girl, Rose, stopped before leaving and said, “Mr Robert, thanks for your praise and encouragement. I wish you were my teacher every day. ”Those kind words motivated me to work harder.
Years later, my hard work paid off. I finally became the head teacher of a primary school. I believed every student had the potential to succeed and that it was our job as educators to help them discover it. When I had the opportunity to hire new graduates as teachers, I looked for those who shared this belief. I wanted individuals who were not only knowledgeable but also passionate about teaching.
I learned something from my teaching and management experience: We are all teachers, and we are all students as well. We learn from each other. It doesn’t matter what your job is, because you are always teaching others with your words and with your actions. I encouraged my teachers to create a supportive and inspiring learning environment. I also inspired them to connect with their students, recognize their unique strengths and develop their potential. By doing so, they could positively impact students’ lives, just as my own teachers had done for me.
注意:1. 續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應150個左右;
