One of China’s first female sea-rescue pilots looks back in pride at 300-plus missions and promises to save more lives. When the perfect storm brews (醞釀) over the boundless sea and lives are in danger, a crew of highly trained professionals embarks on a mission impossible to search for and rescue survivors from the rough waters. Wan Qiuwen is one of them. And, she’s a woman.
The 36-year-old from Shanghai has broken the glass ceiling to become one of China’s first two female rescue helicopter pilots who respond to search and rescue missions involving cargo ship snags (貨船遇險), vessel accidents, medical emergencies and special marine operations. The demanding nature of the profession had always favored male candidates until the rules were changed for the first and only time. She says, “Rescue at sea can be both challenging and terrifying. If you don’t think and act fast, people may die.”
On Aug 20,2020, an oil tanker ferrying 3,000 metric tons of gasoline collided with a cargo ship loaded with sand and gravel about 1.5 nautical miles (2,778 meters) southeast of the Yangtze River estuary, sparking a fire on the deck of the oil tanker and causing the latter to sink. Wan was among the first respondents. She flew to the site from Gaodong helicopter airport, which is the country’s first-of-its-kind marine rescue launchpad (發射臺). “The tanker was still burning and there was a thick envelope of smoke, reducing visibility to near zero.” she recalls. And yet, with her sea wisdom, Wan spotted a survivor and executed a successful rescue operation. She hovered above the troubled waters for a couple of minutes to estimate the best extraction point, and then threw down a rope and pulled up a seriously injured crew member.
Now, a mother of a boy, when people ask her if she will continue to fly once her child grows up, Wan’s response is affirmative. “This profession is about saving lives and I am a rescue pilot, once and always.”
4. Which of the following best describe Wan Qiuwen
A. Courageous and Creative. B. Professional and Determined.
C. Conservative and Hardworking. D. Responsible and Self-disciplined.
5. What can be learned from the accident happening on August 20,2020
A. It is visible for Wan to see clearly the site from the sky.
B. Both the oil tanker and the cargo ship sank after collision.
C. During the rescue, Wan threw down a rope without hesitation.
D. Before taking rescue action Wan made a judgement on the situation.
6. What deeper societal meaning does Wan Qiuwen “breaking the glass ceiling” carry
A. She redefined technical standards for helicopter piloting.
B. She overcame physical challenges during rescue missions.
C. She prioritized personal ambition over professional norms.
D. She challenged entrenched gender stereotypes in a male-dominated profession.
7. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To call on more people to be a sea-rescue pilot.
B. To inform the risks of becoming a sea-rescue pilot.
C. To introduce an exceptional woman sea-rescue pilot.
D. To educate people the meaning of breaking through gender prejudice.

Witnessing the blood-red fires of a volcanic eruption on Earth is memorable. But watching liquid rock spill out of a volcano on another planet would be amazing. That is close to what scientists have spotted on Venus: two vast, sinuous lava flows seeping from two different corners of Earth’s planetary neighbor. These findings suggest that Venus, long considered geologically dead, may still be volcanically active today — a revelation that could reshape our understanding of planetary evolution.
“After you see something like this, the first reaction is ‘wow’,” said Davide Sulcanese, author of a study reporting the discovery in the journal Nature Astronomy. “This isn’t just about lava flows; it’s about unlocking the secrets of how rocky planets age differently.”
Earth and Venus were forged at the same time. Both are made of the same primeval matter, and both are the same age and size. So why is Earth a paradise overflowing with water and life, while Venus is a scorched hellscape with acidic skies The answer may lie in their volcanic histories.
Volcanic eruptions change planet atmospheres. One theory holds that, long ago, massive eruptions set off a runaway greenhouse effect on Venus, turning it from a temperate, waterlogged world into a dry desert. If future missions confirm ongoing eruptions, it would mean Venus is still geologically alive — and its destructive transformation might not be over yet.
To better understand its volcanism, scientists hoped to catch a Venusian eruption in the act. But although the planet is known to be covered with volcanoes, a non-transparent atmosphere has prevented anyone from seeing an eruption directly. Advanced technology is now peeling back Venus’s thick clouds, offering glimpses of its fiery past — and present.
In the 1990s, NASA used cloud-penetrating radar to survey most of the planet. But back then, the relatively low-resolution images made spotting fresh molten rock a troublesome task. By using modern software, scientists have now found two unambiguous lava flows, proving that Venus still has stories left to tell.
8. What is the main discovery mentioned in the passage
A. A new type of volcano on Venus.
B. Evidence of recent volcanic activity on Venus.
C. The first direct observation of a Venusian eruption.
D. A comparison between Earth and Venus’s atmospheres.
9. According to the passage why is Venus now extremely hot and dry
A. It lost its atmosphere due to solar winds.
B. It never had water or life in the first place.
C. It was always closer to the Sun than Earth.
D. Massive volcanic emptions triggered a greenhouse effect.
10. What made it difficult for scientists to detect fresh lava flows on Venus in the past
A. The lack of advanced radar technology. B. The lava flows were too small to be seen.
C. The planet’s thick and opaque atmosphere. D. The images from the 1990s had low resolution.
11. What is the most appropriate title for the passage
A. Hellish Transformation: Venus’s Climate Catastrophe
B. Twin Planets: Why Earth and Venus Became Different
C. Volcanic Awakening: Venus’s Hidden Activity Revealed
D. Cloud-Piercing Breakthrough: Mapping Venus’s Volcanoes

A challenge of teaching mathematics rather than, say, history is that the homework is a lot harder to come up with. After all, “Was Henry VIII a good king ” is a reasonable question to ask either a classroom of nine-year-olds or a lecture theatre of postgraduates. But “Solve this quadratic equation (二次方程式)” would leave the classroom nonplussed and the lecture theatre unimpressed. Maths is learned by doing and designing a problem that is easy enough to be accessible, yet hard enough to be satisfying, is a big headache in itself.
Partly for this reason, books that successfully communicate how mathematicians think, but are aimed at those not already in the field, are both valuable and rare. Now Sir David Spiegelhalter, professor of statistics at the University of Cambridge, has added to the category with The Art of Uncertainty. His new book will appeal to many more than just mathematicians, for its topic is universal: how to analyse chance, uncertainty and risk.
If a new virus is running wild and the majority of deaths are among those who have received a newer vaccine (疫苗), is that evidence that the vaccination program is harmful How much of top football teams’ performance comes down to luck rather than skill Professor Spiegelhalter’s exploration of such questions is delightful. First, he uses them to illustrate broader ideas about how probability and statistics work. So a discussion of vaccine safety proceeds to Bayes’s theorem, a procedure for improving one’s judgment of probabilities as new evidence comes to light. The joy of Professor Spiegelhalter’s approach is that he reaches this deep truth through nothing more than some intuitive (直覺的) assumptions and very simple maths.
Most important, though, is Professor Spiegelhalter’s skill at communicating these ideas. Much of probability and statistics can go against our intuition, and the maths behind it is often fearsome. But this is not a difficult book to read or understand.
12. What does the underlined word “nonplussed” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Impressed. B. Inspired.
C. Confused. D. Amused.
13. What is the biggest selling point of The Art of Uncertainty according to the author
A. It casts light on math thoughts.
B. It covers various topics.
C. It makes sense to ordinary people.
D. It satisfies maths professionals.
14. Why does the author mention Bayes’s theorem in paragraph 3
A. To prove the reliability of intuition.
B. To reveal the book’s academic nature.
C. To underline the deep truth of judgement.
D. To demonstrate Spiegelhalter’s writing approach.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. A master of math teaching.
B. A book on intuitive assumptions.
C. A discussion of risk management.
D. A guide to understanding probability.

Three Fingers of Patience
Once there was a farmer with his wife and children living a happy life by earning from their own land in a village. The family planted in spring, and harvested the crops in autumn. They set aside enough for the whole year, and sold the extra in the market. With the money, the family could buy necessities and prepare seeds and fertilizer(肥料)for the next year. Look, the farmer was making his land ready for his next session of farming. The only issue faced by him was an in sufficient amount of water for the fields. After discussing with his family, the farmer came to a conclusion to dig a well nearby his land. This idea could not only solve the present problem of lacking water, but also improve the watering system once and for all.
After managing to get all the materials prepared, he went to visit an expert to ask for advice about where he should dig one. Under the guidance, he started the project at the edge of the land with great expectation. He worked very hard to dig day and night. Several days passed, and there was no water coming out, but he had confidence and further dug the well even without his lunch or dinner. Three days later, he became discouraged as nothing changed though he dug deeper and deeper. His hard work was not rewarded. The whole family boosted his confidence and advised him not to lose hope. He didn’t want to disappoint anyone, especially himself, and began his project again. Another two days went by, and there was not a single drop of water coming from the well. He was completely tired, lost patience and went home thinking that everything was a waste of time. Although his family still believed they were able to find water there, the result made them accept the failure. In case passers-by fell into the hole by mistake, they put a piece of wood which was the size of five fingers long near the unfinished well. Since then, the family didn’t talk about the well any more.

Last week, our school hosted a remarkable workshop named “Intangible Cultural Heritage Meets Technology” in the school hall. The event aimed to explore how technology can preserve and promote intangible cultural heritage.
There were exhibitions of traditional art forms combined with high tech elements like VR experiences, through which students could immerse themselves in the charm of intangible cultural heritage as if they were in the historical scenarios. Experts also gave inspiring speeches.

【答案】參考范文:
Paragraph 1:
One night, a villager walked beside the well and hit his leg on that wood by mistake. His leg really hurt as the piece of wood was very solid. It took him a long time to recover from the pain. This man became so annoyed that with all his frustration and anger he lifted the piece of wood, and with full energy threw the wood inside the well. The moment the man threw the wood, it went and hard hit the ground nearly three fingers deep.
Paragraph 2:
Water sprang up from the well as soon as the wood was hit down and rose to a certain level. When the farmer heard about this, he rushed to his well. Seeing water rising up from the well that he dug, he was too choked with emotion to speak. His eyes filled with tears as his hard work eventually paid off. After inquiring the villager about what happened, he knew if he had a little more patience he would have succeeded earlier. He was delighted that it helped him realize one requires more patience in any task being accomplished.
