One of China’s first female sea-rescue pilots looks back in pride at 300-plus missions and promises to save more lives. When the perfect storm brews (醞釀) over the boundless sea and lives are in danger, a crew of highly trained professionals embarks on a mission impossible to search for and rescue survivors from the rough waters. Wan Qiuwen is one of them. And, she’s a woman.
The 36-year-old from Shanghai has broken the glass ceiling to become one of China’s first two female rescue helicopter pilots who respond to search and rescue missions involving cargo ship snags (貨船遇險), vessel accidents, medical emergencies and special marine operations. The demanding nature of the profession had always favored male candidates until the rules were changed for the first and only time. She says, “Rescue at sea can be both challenging and terrifying. If you don’t think and act fast, people may die.”
On Aug 20,2020, an oil tanker ferrying 3,000 metric tons of gasoline collided with a cargo ship loaded with sand and gravel about 1.5 nautical miles (2,778 meters) southeast of the Yangtze River estuary, sparking a fire on the deck of the oil tanker and causing the latter to sink. Wan was among the first respondents. She flew to the site from Gaodong helicopter airport, which is the country’s first-of-its-kind marine rescue launchpad (發射臺). “The tanker was still burning and there was a thick envelope of smoke, reducing visibility to near zero.” she recalls. And yet, with her sea wisdom, Wan spotted a survivor and executed a successful rescue operation. She hovered above the troubled waters for a couple of minutes to estimate the best extraction point, and then threw down a rope and pulled up a seriously injured crew member.
Now, a mother of a boy, when people ask her if she will continue to fly once her child grows up, Wan’s response is affirmative. “This profession is about saving lives and I am a rescue pilot, once and always.”

Witnessing the blood-red fires of a volcanic eruption on Earth is memorable. But watching liquid rock spill out of a volcano on another planet would be amazing. That is close to what scientists have spotted on Venus: two vast, sinuous lava flows seeping from two different corners of Earth’s planetary neighbor. These findings suggest that Venus, long considered geologically dead, may still be volcanically active today — a revelation that could reshape our understanding of planetary evolution.
“After you see something like this, the first reaction is ‘wow’,” said Davide Sulcanese, author of a study reporting the discovery in the journal Nature Astronomy. “This isn’t just about lava flows; it’s about unlocking the secrets of how rocky planets age differently.”
Earth and Venus were forged at the same time. Both are made of the same primeval matter, and both are the same age and size. So why is Earth a paradise overflowing with water and life, while Venus is a scorched hellscape with acidic skies The answer may lie in their volcanic histories.
Volcanic eruptions change planet atmospheres. One theory holds that, long ago, massive eruptions set off a runaway greenhouse effect on Venus, turning it from a temperate, waterlogged world into a dry desert. If future missions confirm ongoing eruptions, it would mean Venus is still geologically alive — and its destructive transformation might not be over yet.
To better understand its volcanism, scientists hoped to catch a Venusian eruption in the act. But although the planet is known to be covered with volcanoes, a non-transparent atmosphere has prevented anyone from seeing an eruption directly. Advanced technology is now peeling back Venus’s thick clouds, offering glimpses of its fiery past — and present.
In the 1990s, NASA used cloud-penetrating radar to survey most of the planet. But back then, the relatively low-resolution images made spotting fresh molten rock a troublesome task. By using modern software, scientists have now found two unambiguous lava flows, proving that Venus still has stories left to tell.

A challenge of teaching mathematics rather than, say, history is that the homework is a lot harder to come up with. After all, “Was Henry VIII a good king ” is a reasonable question to ask either a classroom of nine-year-olds or a lecture theatre of postgraduates. Maths is learned by doing and designing a problem that is easy enough to be accessible, yet hard enough to be satisfying, is a big headache in itself.
Partly for this reason, books that successfully communicate how mathematicians think, but are aimed at those not already in the field, are both valuable and rare. Now Sir David Spiegelhalter, professor of statistics at the University of Cambridge, has added to the category with The Art of Uncertainty. His new book will appeal to many more than just mathematicians, for its topic is universal: how to analyse chance, uncertainty and risk.

Most important, though, is Professor Spiegelhalter’s skill at communicating these ideas. Much of probability and statistics can go against our intuition, and the maths behind it is often fearsome. But this is not a difficult book to read or understand.

This man became so annoyed that with all his frustration and anger he lifted the piece of wood, and with full energy threw the wood inside the well. The moment the man threw the wood, it went and hard hit the ground nearly three fingers deep.
Paragraph 2:
Water sprang up from the well as soon as the wood was hit down and rose to a certain level. When the farmer heard about this, he rushed to his well. Seeing water rising up from the well that he dug, he was too choked with emotion to speak. His eyes filled with tears as his hard work eventually paid off. After inquiring the villager about what happened, he knew if he had a little more patience he would have succeeded earlier. He was delighted that it helped him realize one requires more patience in any task being accomplished.
