It's funny—as a writer, it's easy to share your knowledge, or your personal stories
with an unknown listener of many. You think your friends and family may not read
your articles. But as I began to talk more openly about Chinese traditions and food, I
learned that they were interested, curious and really hungered for it. Their interest and
curiosity grew and the culmination of their interest and curiosity was this past Spring
Festival. They would like to spend the Spring Festival Eve with me. I accepted their
request. It was an inconvenient Monday. I'd never had Spring Festival Eve when
anyone but my father cooked.
I took the day off for the dinner preparation. I drove 45 minutes out of town to a
Cantonese BBQ shop where I bought a whole roast duck and watched, fascinated, as
it was changed into bite sizes. I shopped at a faraway international market like a
madwoman, looking for Chinese vegetables and other foods that would be new for my
guests. I called my dad, asking for some pointers on how to make dishes I'd never
made. I texted him pictures of the sea fish I picked out, and the red clothing they
threw on for luck.
In just a few hours, I cooked a dinner of 15 dishes for six friends who cared
enough about me and my culture and who came over on a cold winter Monday night
to celebrate my tradition with me. We drank, ate and toasted the beautiful night.
Laughter of joy filled my room. And that night, I felt what it was to be loved for my
culture as well as our food.
24.What does the underlined word “culmination” mean in paragraph 1
A.Top. B.Celebration.
C.Tradition. D.Trouble.
25.What did the author do in the BBQ shop
A.She ate a whole roast duck.
B.She bought a roast duck.
C.She asked to cook a duck herself.
D.She took beautiful photos of the duck.
26.What does the second paragraph mainly talk about
A.The shops the author went to.
B.The author's love of Chinese food.
C.The author's preparation for dinner.
D.The suggestions the author's father gave.
27.What can we learn about the author from the passage
A.She is living with her father. B.She is a madwoman.
C.She is a world famous writer. D.She is proud of Chinese culture.
When you're bored, what do you do The answer is a no brainer: you reach for
your phone. Five minutes of doggy pictures can seem like the perfect break. But a
new unpublished study has bad news. Reaching for your phone is likely to leave you
feeling more bored.
To figure out the relationship between phones and boredom, the research team
set up an app on the phones of 83 volunteers to keep an eye on how often they used
their devices. They also asked these volunteers to keep detailed diaries at work,
recording their level of tiredness and boredom.
The researchers' first discovery was no shocker. We're on our phones a lot. Phone
breaks were very frequent: in the 20 minutes following each questionnaire, volunteers
picked up their phone 52 percent of the time, spending an average of around 90
seconds on it each time. Equally unsurprising was the second finding: the more tired
we are, the more likely we are to reach for our phones. The real kicker was the final
finding. While we look to our phones to relieve our tiredness and boredom, screen
time actually seemed to increase feelings of boredom.
The research team thought about the different reasons why this might be so.
Shifting from work to your phone and back again may end up being more tiring in
mind than it is stimulating (提神的). In other words, that baby goat video was nice,
but not worth the cost to your brain in effort and concentration. Besides, picking up
your phone might just serve as a reminder of all the fun and interesting things out
there you could be doing if you didn't have to fill out paperwork.
This one small study can't clearly say if either of these explanations is right, but
the basic takeaway is pretty clear: A quick look at your phone is going to make your
brain feel even more tired. If so, what to do instead
28.Why did the research team set up an app on the volunteers' phones
A. To ensure their rest time. B. To remove their boredom.
C. To track their phone usage. D. To record their tiredness.
29.What do the underlined words “The real kicker” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. The most unexpected. B. The most advanced.
C. The most frequent. D. The most relieving.
30.Why is the baby goat video mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To show phones can be tiring.
B. To show phones can be inspiring.
C. To show phones can function as a reminder.
D. To show phones can benefit our paperwork.
31.What might the author continue talking about
A. Why screen time is harmful. B. How to take a better break.
C. Recommended online activities. D. Studies on phone addiction.
If asked whether space exploration(探 索 ) should continue, most Americans
would give an immediate response either in favour of continuing or in favour of
ending space exploration. A common response would be that space exploration is a
waste of money. An average American, uneducated on the subject, might believe that
the government is wasting billions of dollars on the research that has no value.
Someone ignorant of the subject might say that a space shuttle goes up once in a while
and that is about all that happens. Research is ongoing and continues when there are
no shuttles being launched. This also costs the government money. Does the extreme
cost of space exploration make sense
One argument is that the government is wasting money on the research not being
used on Earth. Actually, the money goes to workers and scientists that support
National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) missions, and goes to major
companies that play important roles in major sectors of the US economy. Boeing is a
partner of NASA for aircraft, the same company that makes commercial aircraft for
the airline industry.
Another benefit of continuing space exploration is the many spinoff technologies
(衍生技術) it provides. The artificial heart resulted from experiments on the space
shuttle. The handheld Jaws of Life used to save victims from car accidents originated
from the system used to separate the space shuttle from its booster rockets. Insulation
in homes that keeps them warm and energy efficient is based on the technology used
to insulate the space shuttle.
There are direct benefits to the economy provided by NASA missions as well as
spinoff technologies. These advances are found in food, building materials, medical
procedures and the vehicles we drive. While it can be proven that billions of dollars
that could be used elsewhere is being spent on space exploration, the benefits it
provides outweigh the negative aspects. As a matter of fact, the money spent helps to
improve the quality of our lives.
32.How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed
A.By listing data.
B.By offering analyses.
C.By giving some examples.
D.By presenting research findings.
33.What is the function of Jaws of Life
A.To save people from traffic accidents.
B.To do experiments on the space shuttle.
C.To keep houses warm and energy efficient.
D.To separate the space shuttle from its booster rockets.
34.What does the author think of space exploration
A.It has changed our life completely.
B.It costs too much money.
C.It has nothing to do with us.
D.It benefits us in many ways.
35.What would be the best title for the text
A.Benefits of Space Exploration
B.Is Space Exploration Worth the Cost
C.How to Make Space Exploration Affordable
D.Missions of the NASA Space Shuttle Programme

On the first day of school, I stared in amazement at the enormous buildings. This
high school was unquestionably larger than the one I had formerly gone to. It was my
second year of high school but my first in St. Paul’s School. The previous night, I had
determined that I would be far happier in a new school if I befriended the so-called
“popular” kids. Socializing with the right crowd would surely enhance my life. I even
purchased a new set of clothes and had my hair done to ensure the first day would be
perfect.
Nervous yet eager to start my new life, I went up the stairs to the front entrance.
The hallways were filled with children shouting, laughing, and sharing tales of their
summer vacations. My first class was geometry, but I had no idea where it was.
As I stood in the hall looking confused, a short, blonde girl with glasses
approached and inquired, “Are you new You seem lost. Do you need assistance My
name is Diane. What’s yours ” Although she appeared a bit strange and was not the
type of person I wanted to befriend, I decided to reply since I was indeed lost.
After introducing ourselves, I followed her up the stairs and along a hallway on
the right, making small talk all the while. When we arrived at my classroom, she said,
“Well, here you are. Welcome to our school, and I hope your day goes smoothly.”
I thanked her and waved goodbye. Once inside the classroom, I noticed a large
group of people gathered around someone who seemed to be telling a story. I walked
over and got close enough to listen in. Everyone’s attention was fixed on the guy in
the middle of the circle wearing a letter jacket covered with patches. I judged that this
guy must be popular, so I managed to secure a seat right next to him and said, “Hi, my
name is Sara and I’m new here.” He replied, “Michael.”
At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class
is, could you help me ”

M:Good evening and welcome to Real Life. Tonight, we have Janice Weston
here in the studio with us. She is going to tell us about her schedule in the nursing
home. Welcome, Mrs Weston!
W:Thanks. I usually get up at 6:30. When my husband was alive, we had to be
up by five o'clock. He was a long-distance train driver, you see. Before breakfast, I
have a cup of tea and listen to music on the radio. Then, between seven and eight, I
get dressed and eat breakfast. I always watch television while I eat breakfast for the
news and the weather. And then I usually have a nap until lunch. We have a big lunch
here at Twybury's. After lunch, I like being taken out in my wheelchair. I hate staying
indoors. I like looking in the shop windows or sitting in a park and watching the
world go by. I usually fall asleep at about three, and we have our tea at around five. In
the evening, we play cards, and then I'm in bed by eight. I am getting old, you know.
I'm nearly eighty-three.

On the first day of school, I stared in amazement at the enormous buildings.
This high school was unquestionably larger than the one I had formerly gone to. It
was my second year of high school but my first in St. Paul’s School. The previous
night, I had determined that I would be far happier in a new school if I befriended the
so-called “popular” kids. Socializing with the right crowd would surely enhance my
life. I even purchased a new set of clothes and had my hair done to ensure the first day
would be perfect.
Nervous yet eager to start my new life, I went up the stairs to the front
entrance. The hallways were filled with children shouting, laughing, and sharing tales
of their summer vacations. My first class was geometry, but I had no idea where it
was.
At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my
next class is, could you help me ”

【答案】 At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure
where my next class is, could you help me ” With a frown, he looked at me and then
said a quick no, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom. As they
were walking out I heard him say, “Did you guys see that new girl trying to get into
our group That outfit’s too strange. “They all laughed and some of them turned
around and stared at me. My face hot with shame, I stood stock-still, not believing
what had just happened.
Just when I was about to cry, someone came up and patted me on the
shoulder. It was Diane. Like a ray of sunshine, the big smile on her face swept away
my gloom. I struggled to hold my feelings back and told her what I had encountered.
A gleam of concern in her eyes, she said she was sorry and offered to find my next
class. At that moment I realized how wrong I was in wanting to only be friends with
popular people. Maybe I shouldn’t decide whether a person is worth being my friend
or not by their reputation, but by who they are.
