appeal for many. In a recent survey, only 19% of young people aged 18 to 34 said they read newspapers daily.
Instead, 37% prefer local TV news, while 44% turn to online news sites. The way we get news has clearly changed.
Just a generation or two ago, the newspaper was the main way in which many people got their news. But now,
“there’s a revolution in the way young people access news,” says media consultant Merrill Brown. Nearly every
home has at least one TV set. There’s high-speed, wireless Internet access in many cafes. Cell phones handle text

At mile 12, my feet were already starting to hurt. By mile 17 of this year’s Boston marathon, I was overcome
by an urge to stop. The muscles in my legs and the soles of my feet were aching. There were still 9 hilly miles to go.

Beaverton-based lab, basketball courts, treadmills, and padded running platforms have sensors that measure the

routine. The thought of a steaming cup of coffee helps to pull many people worldwide out of bed in the morning.

Scientists have consistently linked this ubiquitous drink to lowered risks for illnesses such as heart disease, colon
cancer and type 2 diabetes. But its effects on the gut microbiome (腸道菌群) are largely unknown.
Researchers from Harvard University examined samples from over 20, 000 participants who tracked their
daily coffee intake. They discovered that regular coffee consumption has a connection to the growth of a specific
gut bacterium (細菌) . “We don’t know much about this bug, but we can place it as likely a good one, ” said Peter
Belenky, a microbiologist at Brown University, who was not involved in the study.
In the largest-ever study, coffee intake was found to increase the number of certain types of bacteria in the gut,
but the connection with Lawsonibacter asaccharolyticus (溶糖勞森乳桿菌) was the strongest. When coffee was
added to lab dishes containing this bacterium, it grew faster. “It’s rare to find such a strong and clear link, ” said
Mingyang Song, a co-senior author of the study from Harvard University.
To understand the role of this bacterium in the gut, the researchers looked at substances in the blood of
hundreds of participants. They found that higher levels of quinic acid, which can help reduce inflammation (炎癥) ,
were strongly related to the growth of L. asaccharolyticus. The same was true for hippurate, a substance that shows
a more diverse gut microbiome and better gut health.
Based on these results, the scientists are now trying to connect these bacteria and related substances to overall
health. Song explained, “This could help us understand if the bacteria are really behind the health benefits of
coffee. ”
Analyzing large datasets from many people is a good way to explore the links between what we eat and drink
and the bacteria in our gut. Belenky said, “This study might pave the way for a new approach to food research. ”
