today includes 3 lectures and 4 academic seminars. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) refers to the study of
human body, disease diagnosis and the prevention and control of diseases. For thousands of years, Chinese people
have accumulated rich experience in fighting against diseases, thus forming their own unique medical theory. It
has its own basic principles of diagnosis and treatment, which build the foundation of a systematical theory.

As an ordinary man, I have a special habit to confess. Whenever I walk down the street, I offer to pour a
bottle of water from the nearby river into the dirt of a street tree. It’s just my personal habit, and I think it doesn’t
make a difference, but I’d like to do it. I mention this in light of a campaign launched by the Arboricultural
Association to call on the public to water new street trees.
The UK government has committed to planting millions of trees to help meet climate targets and aims to
increase tree cover from 14.5% to 16.5% by 2050. However, as John Parker, chief executive of the Arboricultural
Association, says, “Planting a tree is just the start of the story. The health and survival of new urban trees is
threatened by increasingly dry weather. It is recommended that the newly planted trees be given about 50 litres of
water per week for the first three years.” While in rural settings, the newly planted trees and woods can take care
of themselves and adapt, the challenging conditions mean trees in the urban areas need a bit more care.
Long ago, I assumed that the good of street trees was to soften the hard edges of urban environments. But,
what an underestimation of tree power that was! A study from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities illustrates
they can provide inspiration or a calming atmosphere in an otherwise crowded city. Trees are responsible for
easing urban heat island effects and air and pollutant filtration. And I think they provide the habitat for wildlife,
especially birds.
Trees can’t run away. Unfortunately for them and fortunately for urban residents, city trees are stuck with us.
If we want to continue enjoying all the good they do, we should try to understand their needs and do all that we

reading, writing, and arithmetic, teaching about mindfulness, and mental health are important life skills for young
people to have. The state of Florida agrees.
Now, public schools in Florida have been required to teach five or more hours about mental health for
students in grades 6-12. This new idea was welcomed by the Florida Board of Education in July and is being
carried out as a potential lifesaver.

Florida is the third state, following New York and Virginia in 2020, to pass laws that require mental health

The U. S. is in the midst of a “loneliness epidemic”. For a lot of people, the feeling is even more noticeable
during the holidays. In addition to the emotional impact of chronic loneliness, it has some dramatic health
consequences: increased risk of heart disease and stroke, infections, cancer, even death.
People may feel lonely when their social needs are not met by the people around them. Laetitia
Mwilambwe-Tshilobo, a social cognitive neuroscientist at Princeton University, says loneliness epidemic captures
two distinct groups: first, people with a low number of social connections; second, people who feel they have poor
quality existing relationships.
Elisa Baek, a social neuroscientist at the University of Southern California, co-authored a study that looked at
whether lonely people view the world differently than non-lonely people, specifically among college freshmen.
Baek found that while non-lonely people were all similar in their neural responses, lonely people had responses
that were really different — not just from the non-lonely group, but also from each other. Baek says that these
idiosyncrasies (特性) in how lonely participants process the world, “may pose challenges in how these people are
able to achieve social connection and feel connected with others.”
To study these changes to the brain, Baek’s team collected fMRI data — a measure of blood flow changes
in the brain — while first-year college students watched short videos to measure how similarly participants’
brains responded to the videos. The videos ranged from dramatic and comedic clips to instructional
demonstrations in order to reproduce experiences participants might have in daily life. She says it’s the closest
they could get to study people’s brain activity — and how they process the world — while they were going
about their lives.
Mwilambwe-Tshilobo, who is not involved in the study, says the research accurately highlights how
individual differences affect people in experiencing loneliness. “Trying to connect more deeply with one or two or
three other people may be more important than to try to get to know everybody and being on good terms with
everybody. It doesn’t have to be someone who is like-minded. It’s more like: How can we get on the same page
with people who we might not start off on the same page with, but that might form deeper connections
afterwards ” she adds.

As an ordinary man, I have a special habit to confess. Whenever I walk down the street, I offer to pour a
bottle of water from the nearby river into the dirt of a street tree. It’s just my personal habit, and I think it doesn’t
make a difference, but I’d like to do it. I mention this in light of a campaign launched by the Arboricultural
Association to call on the public to water new street trees.
The UK government has committed to planting millions of trees to help meet climate targets and aims to
increase tree cover from 14.5% to 16.5% by 2050. However, as John Parker, chief executive of the Arboricultural
Association, says, “Planting a tree is just the start of the story. The health and survival of new urban trees is
threatened by increasingly dry weather. It is recommended that the newly planted trees be given about 50 litres of
water per week for the first three years.” While in rural settings, the newly planted trees and woods can take care
of themselves and adapt, the challenging conditions mean trees in the urban areas need a bit more care.
Long ago, I assumed that the good of street trees was to soften the hard edges of urban environments. But,
what an underestimation of tree power that was! A study from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities illustrates
they can provide inspiration or a calming atmosphere in an otherwise crowded city. Trees are responsible for
easing urban heat island effects and air and pollutant filtration. And I think they provide the habitat for wildlife,
especially birds.
Trees can’t run away. Unfortunately for them and fortunately for urban residents, city trees are stuck with us.
If we want to continue enjoying all the good they do, we should try to understand their needs and do all that we
can to support them. A bottle of water won’t do much, but next time you all together have a bucket of water to
pour, you know what big effect will happen.

Schools need to give students all the tools they need when they graduate. Besides teaching the basics of
reading, writing, and arithmetic, teaching about mindfulness, and mental health are important life skills for young
people to have. The state of Florida agrees.
Now, public schools in Florida have been required to teach five or more hours about mental health for
students in grades 6-12. This new idea was welcomed by the Florida Board of Education in July and is being
carried out as a potential lifesaver.
The new curriculum requires-students to learn about the symptoms (癥狀) of mental illness and where to
find help if they are feeling sad or have other problems and even teaches the teenagers how to help their friends
and classmates if they see them struggling.
“We know that 50 percent of all mental illness cases begin by age 14, so we are being active in our
commitment to provide our kids with the necessary tools to see them through their successes and challenges.
Providing mental health instruction is another important step forward in supporting our families,” Education
Commissioner Richard Corcoran said.
Florida is the third state, following New York and Virginia in 2020, to pass laws that require mental health
education in schools. According. to CNN, the New York law updated the health curriculum to include mental
health for elementary, middle and high school students. The Virginia law required that mental health education be
provided for 9th and 10th graders.
These three states in the US are taking bold steps to help youth deal with the intricacy of life as they grow
from teenagers into adults. It is a confusing world they face and giving them the tools they need is essential.
Mental health is something that should be taught in schools in all the US and across the globe.

The U. S. is in the midst of a “loneliness epidemic”. For a lot of people, the feeling is even more noticeable
during the holidays. In addition to the emotional impact of chronic loneliness, it has some dramatic health
consequences: increased risk of heart disease and stroke, infections, cancer, even death.
People may feel lonely when their social needs are not met by the people around them. Laetitia
Mwilambwe-Tshilobo, a social cognitive neuroscientist at Princeton University, says loneliness epidemic captures
two distinct groups: first, people with a low number of social connections; second, people who feel they have poor
quality existing relationships.
Elisa Baek, a social neuroscientist at the University of Southern California, co-authored a study that looked at
whether lonely people view the world differently than non-lonely people, specifically among college freshmen.
Baek found that while non-lonely people were all similar in their neural responses, lonely people had responses
that were really different — not just from the non-lonely group, but also from each other. Baek says that these
idiosyncrasies (特性) in how lonely participants process the world, “may pose challenges in how these people are
able to achieve social connection and feel connected with others.”
To study these changes to the brain, Baek’s team collected fMRI data — a measure of blood flow changes
in the brain — while first-year college students watched short videos to measure how similarly participants’
brains responded to the videos. The videos ranged from dramatic and comedic clips to instructional
demonstrations in order to reproduce experiences participants might have in daily life. She says it’s the closest
they could get to study people’s brain activity — and how they process the world — while they were going
about their lives.
Mwilambwe-Tshilobo, who is not involved in the study, says the research accurately highlights how
individual differences affect people in experiencing loneliness. “Trying to connect more deeply with one or two or
three other people may be more important than to try to get to know everybody and being on good terms with
everybody. It doesn’t have to be someone who is like-minded. It’s more like: How can we get on the same page
with people who we might not start off on the same page with, but that might form deeper connections
afterwards ” she adds.

enough to brave the storm were called and asked if they could help. Soon, a handful of people had managed to

blinding snow with a huge kettle and enough ingredients to make tomato soup for at least half of the school. There
