For most people, a common weekend usually means dining out with friends, watching movies, or shopping. This was once the daily life for Chen Lingyi from Shanghai. But three years ago, Chen was surprised to find that even after trying to save money for several months, she still had no spare money.

The Great Sphinx of Giza is one of the most famous wonders of ancient Egypt. ▲ This has long been a secret. Now, new research suggests that nature may have had a hand in its forming. The wonder possibly had been created by winds long before it was ever touched by human hands.
According to a recent study, a yardang (風蝕脊) may have been the wonder’s bottom. Yardangs are found in desert. These landforms are the creation of wind erosion (侵蝕). As the wind blows sand onto rocks, softer pieces slowly disappear while harder ones remain. Some yardangs are tall like towers, while others are shorter and wider. Some may even end up looking very strange.
Ristroph, a researcher at New York University, and his team decided to recreate a possible process of Sphinx’s formation from a yardang. They started by making a shapeless mound of clay (土堆). After that, the researchers put some harder materials inside the clay. They then ran a fast-running stream of water over it to mimic wind erosion. The researchers noticed how the clay changed. In the end, a Sphinx-like shape appeared.
While wind possibly did its job, researchers agree that highly skilled people played a big role in the creation of the Great Sphinx. As Ristroph said, “There is no doubt that the face was done by humans.”

More people in the UK are choosing to spend their money on “ethical (合乎道德的)” shopping, according to the Fairtrade Foundation. Ethical shopping means buying things that do not harm people, animals or the environment when they are produced.
The Fairtrade Foundation is an organization in the UK that helps farmers and workers in poorer parts of the world to make enough money to live comfortably. It does this by asking companies to provide safe working conditions and pay their workers fair wages (工資). The company can then sell its products with a fairtrade symbol so buyers know they are shopping ethically.
Michael Gidney, from the Fairtrade Foundation, said it expects to have made more than 13 million from sales in the UK last year, an increase from 12.8 million in 2022. Last year was a difficult time for the UK so people had less money to spend. However, the growth in ethical spending shows that many people care about how their spending influences others.
Millions of people in 70 countries think the Fairtrade Foundation’s work is good. There are also organizations like Rainforest Alliance running ethical shopping plans. Gidney said the growth in ethical shopping shows that more people want to buy products that treat workers, animals and the planet well. “It shows that trade can be sustainable (可持續的) and fair for people and the planet,” he said.

There was a lot for me to explore. I got close to nature, learned something new and read some great books. Not only were these activities relaxing and meaningful but also preparation for the new semester. I also kept exercising every two days for a healthy body and mind. To relieve my parents from the housework, I also helped to clean up.
For everyone, making a good plan is the first step to having a happy holiday. Moreover, we should mind our safety and never swim in dangerous places. And don’t forget to keep in touch with parents.
