the National Museum of China in Beijing.
The phoenix coronet is one of the museum's most famous exhibits, which was once worn by Empress
Xiaoduan. It is decorated with nine phoenixes, nine dragons, thousands of pearls and hundreds of rubies

On December 4, 2024, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) decided to put the Spring Festival on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural
Heritage of Humanity(人類非物質文化遺產代表作名錄).
The Spring Festival is the most important holiday in Chinese culture. It marks the start of a new year
according to the lunar calendar. Traditions like hanging spring couplets (春聯) and giving children red
envelopes show the Chinese people's wish for a better, or more auspicious life. For Chinese people around
the world, these customs bring back happy memories. For other members of the global village, they offer a
glimpse (一瞥) into the charm of an ancient Eastern culture.
The Spring Festival has also inspired similar celebrations in other Asian cultures. This shows how
cultures can learn from each other. Making the Spring Festival a part of the world's intangible cultural
heritage is very important. It not only celebrates the rich traditional Chinese culture, but also helps people
from different backgrounds understand and care about each other more.
In the world's culture mix, the Spring Festival provides a chance for people to understand and enjoy other
cultures. With Chinese communities across the world celebrating the Spring Festival, the culture mix of the
host country is enriched(使豐富). Local people come to see how much Chinese culture is in common with
their own. * Understanding is the first step to acceptance(認可), and only with acceptance can there be
peace and prosperity(繁榮).
Celebrating traditional festivals like the Spring Festival brings people from different cultures closer
together. With values like family, hope, and unity, the Spring Festival is similar to many other traditional
celebrations in the world and is truly a shared gift from humans.
Today, Spring Festival activities have been held in about 200 countries and regions across the world.
They help us see that there is more that unites us than divides us. In a time full of both challenges and hope,
let the Spring Festival give us strength to work together for a better future.

C
Plants, which come in different shapes and sizes, face many challenges during their lifetimes. They
can't hide during storms or move away from insect attacks. However, they have developed a special way to
remember the past and adapt(適應) to their environments.
One way trees remember is through temperature memories. For example, conifers(針葉樹) growing
from seeds that developed at different temperatures will show different timing when their new needles
appear in the spring. New needles appear earlier on trees from seeds that developed at lower temperatures,
and trees from seeds that developed at warmer temperatures grow new needles later in the season. This
temperature memory can last for at least 20 years and may even last the tree's whole lifetime.
Another environmental cue that can create a memory in conifers is gamma radiation(伽馬輻射).The
Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster gave scientists a chance to understand how radiation can cause
conifer memories. Some trees that got a lot of radiation from the disaster look like bushes. But trees that
got only a little or some radiation look just fine. One reason for this difference could be that the different
radiation levels caused changes, by damaging the trees’ DNA.
Conifers can also make memories when an insect lays her eggs on the needles. Researchers have
noticed that needles with sawfly (鋸蜂) eggs on them are eaten less by the caterpillars that emerge(孵出)
from the eggs. *When the mother sawfly lays her eggs, she cuts the needles and puts special proteins into
them, telling the needles to change the way they use their DNA instructions to help them to protect
themselves.
Giving conifers plant-made defense(防 御 ) chemicals can also make memories. When small spruce
trees get these chemicals in the fall, they can better protect themselves from insects when they are planted
out in the forest in the spring.
In short, studying how trees remember and adapt is very important. There are still a lot of things we
do not know about how and how long trees can remember the past. But the research is very interesting
and will help us understand this amazing thing more.
21.The example of conifers in Paragraph 2 is used to tell .
A. the influence of temperature on tree growth
B. the way trees remember through temperature memories
4
C. the differences in needles' appearance among trees D. the timing of new needles' growth in spring
22. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A. Gamma radiation has no effect on conifers. B. The Chernobyl disaster helps scientists a lot.
C. Gamma radiation causes conifers to remember. D. Trees that got a lot of radiation look healthier.
23. In which picture can we see a“caterpillar”
24.What is the best title for this passage
A. How trees grow B. How trees remember
C. The challenges plants face D. The importance of studying trees
