Yang Huazhen, 67, a national-level inheritor (繼承人) of Tibetan weaving and cross-stitch embroidery (十字繡) techniques, never forgets how she created her first embroidery piece.

On December 30, 2024, the tunneling (開鑿隧道) of Tianshan Shengli
Tunnel, the world's longest expressway(高速公路) tunnel, was completed. It
goes through the snow-covered mountains of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous
Region.
As an important section of the Urumqi-Yuli Expressway, this new tunnel
with a total length of 22.13 km will go across the Tianshan Mountains——
one of the longest mountain ranges in the world, and open a new pathway to
southern Xinjiang. The construction of the tunnel started in April 2024.
When opened to traffic in 2025, it will cut travel time through the
Tianshan Mountains from 3 hours to about 20 minutes, and the journey from
Urumqi to Korla, a city in southern Xinjiang, will be shortened from about 7
hours to about 3 hours.
The workers had to overcome many difficulties and be creative in building the tunnel, which is in a
high plateau(高 原 ) area with complicated geological (地 質 的 ) conditions. They have used the
construction scheme(方案) of three drifts and four shafts (豎井). Two specially designed tunnel boring
machines have been used in the construction of the middle drift to create a working platform for
tunneling.
* This is the first time that a tunnel boring machine has been used to build a road tunnel in
China.The use of new technologies has cut the construction time of the tunnel from 10 years by using
the traditional drilling method to just more than four years.

Pu’ er is home to the world-famous tea of the same name. Being cut off
from the outside by rivers, the Jingmai Mountain has become a heaven for
an ancient planting technique. * Tea trees grow under forest canopies (樹
冠), known as the“under-story” method, which filter (過濾) sunshine while
ensuring water.
Nan Kang was former head of Mangjing Village. He now prefers
calling himself a“storyteller of the Jingmai Mountain”. Running a team of
more than 40 tea-producing families from different ethnic groups, he now
wants to turn Jingmai into an influential name in the kingdom of tea.
A 50-meter tree known as“the tree of the bee spirit” in Mangjing Village is sacred (神圣的) to local hearts.
Hundreds of honeycombs (蜂巢) hang from its branches, but no one will touch them to fetch honey as they are
in awe(敬畏) of nature. Instead, villagers set up their own hives nearby.
“We have an old belief: If somebody's hive is empty, it's a sign of the tree's punishment,” Nan says.
“The owner must have done something to break our rules.”
Nan is an old-time Blang leader's grandson. Following a leader named Pa Aileng, Nan's ancestors (祖
先) came to live near the Jingmai Mountain centuries ago. It is said that Pa Aileng found tea leaves and
cured his people of the diseases using them. So the hero is also honored as a“tea ancestor”. Blang people
chose a peak as their sacred mountain to remember him. They call it Peak Aileng.
“We Blang people believe tea has its own spirit,” Nan says. “The first planted tea tree in every field
is called the tea spirit tree. That means the field has an owner. And the symbol also urges everyone to
follow moral rules and protect the plants.”
On Sunday, the Cultural Landscape of Old Tea Forests of the Jingmai Mountain in Pu’ er was listed

In a beautiful scenic spot in Sichuan Province, China, “tiger urine (尿)” is being sold at 50 yuan per
bottle. Sellers said it could help treat rheumatism(風濕病) and other related conditions.
However, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) expert said that tiger urine is not a recognized traditional treatment, and that its efficacy(功效)remains unsubstantiated, according to the report on Wednesday.
The claimed (聲 稱 ) benefits of this tiger urine include relief of
conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and injuries from falls. The
recommended method of use is to mix it with white liquor and put it onto
the sore areas with ginger slices, said the report. * Customers are advised to discontinue the use right away if they experience any allergic (過 敏 的 )
reactions after internal consumption.
The selling location of this tiger urine is a wildlife park within the Bifeng Gorge Scenic Area in Ya’ an,
Sichuan, which is a popular 5A-level scenic spot. Relevant personnel said the tiger urine being sold is
collected directly from the tigers themselves, by collecting it in basins before bottling for sale. The park
believed it meets the necessary qualifications (資格) and can be sold as long as there is a business license
with an operating permit.
The sales volume is generally average, with sometimes only one or two bottles sold in a day, and at
other times none at all. The scenic area first introduced the“tiger urine” from Siberian tigers on its WeChat
account in 2014, using it as a prize in outdoor reality show games.
A TCM expert said that tiger urine lacks recognition as a traditional medicine and offers no proven benefits to patients. While tiger bones can treat rheumatism, it is illegal (非法的) to use them. The
expert also noted that the scenic area is not qualified to sell such products as all medications require government approval(批準) before they can be used by patients.

How is everything going I'm writing to invite you to the sharing meeting about the power of role
models. In the meeting,we plan to talk about several role models like Qian Suyun and Qin Daqing, and
share their inspiring stories. The meeting will be held in our school meeting room at 3 pm on May
9th.The purpose of this event is to inspire us all by learning the examples set by these role models. It's
