Yuan. People cast glutinous dumplings (粽子) into the water after Qu Yuan threw himself into the river, hoping
that the fishes would eat the dumplings instead of his body. For thousands of years, the festival has been marked
by glutinous dumplings and dragon boat races.
Wushu can be traced back to ancient times. It is a kind of traditional Chinese culture. As we all know, the
Chinese Wushu Association has been working very hard to popularize Wushu. As a way of self-defense and to

There was once an old man who went to the seaside every morning, walking along the beach drawing
pictures and enjoying the beautiful sea. One morning, he came across a beach accidentally where thousands of
starfish had washed up.
The old man noticed a little girl was coming in the distance. As she walked, she would stop to bend down
(彎下腰) and pick up an object and throw it into the sea.
The man walked closer asking what she was doing by the seaside. She stopped, looked up, and replied,
“Throwing starfish into the sea.”
The man asked her why, to which she replied, “The sea has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t
go back to the sea by themselves. When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.”
The man noted, “But there are miles and miles of beach and there are thousands of starfish all along every
mile, how will you make much of a difference ”
The girl bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it as far as she could into the sea. Then she turned
towards the old man, gave a smile and said, “I made a difference to that one!”
After hearing the girl’s explanation, the old man was shocked. People often think they can’t do enough to
make a big difference so they put off their actions or wait for someone else to take the lead.
However, the little girl taught the old man a very important lesson. Everyone has the opportunities to create
positive changes. One small step towards changing the world can make a big difference. Be the change for

Scientists found that people who have fewer friends in real life are happier than those with far more if many
of theirs were online.
Social media, the researchers said, has encouraged younger people to have larger but more impersonal
networks of “friends”. But instead of trying to get more friends, they added, a better cure for loneliness might be
spending time with those you’re closest to.
Researchers from the University of Leeds, UK, studied data from two online surveys of nearly 1, 500
people. Those who took the survey gave details about their ages, social interactions (相互影響), and how satisfied
they were with their social lives. They included details of how often and how they interacted with family or
neighbours, and whether they included people who provided services to them in their networks.
The researchers found that those who had a small number of close friends generally were happier than
those who had a large number of superficial (關系淺的) friends. “Loneliness has less to do with the number of
friends you have, and more to do with how you feel about your friends,” said Dr. Bruine de Bruin, one of the
researchers. “It’s often the younger adults who admit to having negative perceptions (負面看法) of their friends.
Loneliness happens in people of all ages,” she added. “If you feel lonely, it may be more helpful to make a
positive (積極的) connection with a friend than to try and find new people to meet,” she also said.
In her study Dr. Bruine de Bruin found that older people had smaller social circles than young people, but
the people in these circles were closer to them. Younger people, on the other hand, had bigger circles that were
made up of “peripheral others”—people who are not true friends, but just people they know. These so-called
friends didn’t influence the younger people’s happiness.
The results of the study show that the stereotypes (偏見) society has about old people being sad and lonely
might not be right. “The research shows that older adults’ smaller networks didn’t have a bad influence on social
satisfaction and happiness. In fact, older adults had a better feeling of happiness than younger adults,” said Bruine
de Bruin.
Based on these results, the study believes that people should pay more attention on the ties with close
friends instead of increasing the number of friends.
27.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A.Who studied the surveys. B.What were included in the surveys.
C.How the surveys influenced people. D.How many people took part in the surveys.
28.What can we learn from the passage
A.Young people make close friends online.
B.You’d better try to meet new people if you feel lonely.
C.Older people have closer friends in their small social circles.
D.The so-called friends bring more happiness to young people.
29.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.Different Types of Close Friends B.Friendship between Old and Young
C.Friends: The More, the Better D.Friends: Online or Offline
根據“Those who took the survey gave details about their ages, social interactions (相互影響),
and how satisfied they were with their social lives.”可知,第三段主要介紹了調查所包括的內容,故選 B。
28.推理判斷題。根據“In her study Dr. Bruine de Bruin found that older people had smaller social circles than
young people, but the people in these circles were closer to them.”可知,老年人在他們的小社交圈里有更親密
的朋友。故選 C。
29.標題歸納題。根據“Scientists found that people who have fewer friends in real life are happier than those with
far more if many of theirs were online.”可知,本文主要討論了朋友是不是越多越好。故選 C。
D
When considering the kind of experience that makes life better, most people first think that happiness
depends on experiencing pleasure: good food, good jobs, all the comforts that money can buy. If we couldn’t have
these, we might as well sit in front of the television on a quiet evening.
Pleasure is an important part of the quality of life, but by itself it doesn’t bring happiness. When people
think further about what makes a worthy life, they tend (傾向于) to move beyond pleasant memories and begin to
remember other events, other experiences that overlap (有重疊) pleasurable ones but fall into a group with a
separate name: enjoyment. Enjoyable events take place when people have not only satisfied a need or met some
earlier expectation, but also achieved something unexpected.
Enjoyment is characterized by a sense of curiosity, of achievement. Playing a tennis game that improves
one’s ability is enjoyable, as is reading a book that shows things in a new light, as is having a conversation that
leads us to express ideas we didn’t know we had. None of these experiences may be especially pleasurable when
they are taking place, but when we think back on them afterwards, we would say, “That really was fun” and wish
they would happen again. After an enjoyable event we know that we have changed, and grown.
Experiences that give pleasure can also give enjoyment, but the two feelings are quite different. For
example, everybody takes pleasure in eating. However, to enjoys food is more difficult — you have to pay
enough attention to a meal, so as to sense and tell its various tastes. As this example suggests, we can experience
pleasure without any psychic energy, while enjoyment happens only as a result of full attention. A person can feel
pleasure without any effort, as long as certain parts in his brain are stimulated (刺激). But it’s impossible to enjoy
a tennis game or a book without full attention. It’s for this reason that pleasure does not last long, nor does it make
us grow. Growth requires full attention to goals that are new, that are relatively challenging.
Without enjoyment, life will go on, and it can even be pleasant. But it depends heavily on luck and the
external (外部的) environment. To achieve personal control over the quality of experience, however, we need to
learn how to build enjoyment into what happens day in, day out.
30.You will most probably experience enjoyment when you ________.
A.buy expensive shoes B.order a delicious meal
C.talk with friends for new ideas D.sit quietly in front of a television
31.What do you know about pleasure and enjoyment from the passage
A.Enjoyment grows out of pleasure.
B.Pleasure and enjoyment come hand in hand.
C.Pleasurable experiences are part of enjoyable ones.
D.Some experiences provide both pleasure and enjoyment.
32.The words “psychic energy” in Paragraph 4 are closest in meaning to ________.
A.attention B.interest C.ability D.knowledge
33.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.feeling pleasure stops people from achieving growth
B.feeling enjoyment comes with achieving growth
C.a worthy life depends on luck and environment

場能讓我們表達自己不知道自己擁有的想法的談話一樣。由此推出當你和朋友談論新想法時,你很可能會
體驗到樂趣。故選 C。
31.細節理解題。根據“Experiences that give pleasure can also give enjoyment, but the two feelings are quite
different.”可知有些經歷既能帶來愉悅,又能帶來享受。故選 D。
32.詞義猜測題。根據“As this example suggests, we can experience pleasure without any psychic energy, while
enjoyment happens only as a result of full attention.”可知正如這個例子所表明的,我們可以在沒有任何精神能
量的情況下體驗快樂,而享受只有在全神貫注的情況下才會發生。psychic energy 與 attention 意思相近。故
選 A。

full attention to goals that are new, that are relatively challenging.”

Parents and children often face the challenges of money. Common topics include setting the pocket money,
learning to save, and deciding on expensive purchases. The goal of most parents is to teach their kids how to
manage money wisely. The goal of most kids is getting money to spend. How can families balance these goals
“All parents hope they’ll raise a money-savvy (善于理財的) kid, who’ll grow up to be an adult wise in
their money use.” says financial (金融的) planner Peg Eddy. The key is letting kids learn by having a little money
of their own.
The Tidler family in Denver found the best way to teach about money was to let their kids earn some. Their
son, Ryan has made $7,800 by helping with his parents’ garden. Besides, he bought a bike and a wonderful sound
system. And he is going to buy a car next year. Ryan has come to see the value in making his own money even
when other kids are given money by their parents.
Learn Now, Save Later
Money skills are an important part of becoming a successful adult. David Brady, another financial planner,
says, “Young people today will have much more responsibility for their financial future than their parents or
grandparents.” Experts say, knowing how to manage money is the best way for kids to get what they really want.
That means long-term planning and saving for big expenses like college or a car. It also means thinking of others,
by making donations to charity (慈善).
Brady does remind kids. “They shouldn’t be thinking about money all the time,” he says. However, they
should understand basic rules for earning, saving and investing (投資).
That knowledge is greatly needed. Over the past years, the average credit card debt (債務) of Americans
ages 18 to 24 doubled, to nearly $3,000. Among high school students, four out of five have never taken a personal
finance class.
Talking About It
Many kids want to learn how to manage their money. But parents think only about what kids shouldn’t do.
They argue that kids are young and inexperienced, they may easily get in debt if they manage their own money.
Giselle Lopez, 17, of New York City, learned the hard way. She was over $2,000 in debt on her first credit card.
Her parents refused to pay, so Giselle got a job. Then she paid the debt off slowly herself. “Now every time I use
it, I know that it comes from my own pocket,” Giselle says. “That gives me a sense of responsibility for my
actions.”
Different kids will have different styles when it comes to money. Teaching them how to use money doesn’t
have to mean setting strict rules. When children like Ryan and Giselle have their own money to consider, they can
learn to set those rules themselves.
34.What is the goal of most kids about money
35.How has Ryan made $7,800
36.How much was Giselle Lopez in debt on her first credit card
37.Is it a good idea for kids to learn to manage their money Why or why not (Please give at least 2 reasons)

Cathy’s mom went upstairs and called through the door, “Cathy, are you OK ” Cathy didn’t answer it and

Traditional Chinese culture is rich and interesting. It has a variety of forms, such as traditional Chinese
opera, festivals, handwriting, and so on. It’s beginning to attract the attention of the world. Here is a brief
introduction about some forms of traditional Chinese culture.
The Lion Dance is one of the most widespread folk dances in China. The dance has a recorded history of
more than 2, 000 years. Performing the lion dance at the Lantern Festival has become a custom in many parts of
China. People could pray for good luck, safety and happiness by doing that.
The Duanwu Festival, also called the Dragon Boat Festival, is to commemorate (紀念) the patriotic poet Qu
As a way of self-defense and to
keep practitioners (習藝者) fit and strong, Wushu has become popular in some other counties, especially in Africa.
Please match each form of Chinese culture with its description.
A.It keeps people healthy. 21 the Lion Dance
B.It can help people to enjoy fishes! 22 the Duanwu Festival
C. Racing dragon boat has a long history. 23 Wushu

Be the change for
someone and inspire others to do the same. While you may not be able to change the whole world, you can make a
big difference for a small part of it.
24.What did the little girl do by the seaside
A.She drew pictures to enjoy the beautiful sea.
B.She washed the starfish and made them clean.
C.She threw the starfish into the sea to save them.
D.She walked along the beach and was bathed in the sun.
25.How did the old man feel after hearing the girl’s explanation
A.Shocked. B.Worried. C.Excited. D.Relaxed.
26.What can we learn from the story
A.Confidence can make wishes come true.
B.Taking a small step can make a big difference.
C.Changing others is necessary if they are wrong.
D.People can change the world when they grow up.

D.pleasure is the key to a happy and worthy life

四、 閱讀表達(共 10 分, 第 1-3 題每小題 2 分, 第 4 小題 4 分)
