Ahmad was weak. He was all skin and bones. Worse still, he had a severe skin problem on his face. Added to his problems was the fact that he stuttered (口吃) when he was shy or nervous.
There was one advantage Ahmad had, however. He had a beautiful voice. But none of his friends knew about it as he practiced singing only in the bathroom. Once, he was caught unaware singing in the corridor by his classmates. The moment he saw them, he denied (否認) that the beautiful song they had heard was sung by him. They were convinced when his voice went to a characteristic stutter. “I…I…real-lly did-didn’t s-sing…”
One day, the class of Secondary 4B, which Ahmad was in, heard about a singing competition that was to be held in the nearby community centre. A prize would be awarded to the best student singer. It was a well-known yearly competition. Ahmad entered for it. So it was really a surprise for other students to see Ahmad’s name besides Ali’s on the notice board.
“You can sing, Ahmad Get real! Don’t make me laugh!” Hearing the remarks, Ahmad felt awkward and sad. It was enough that they did not support him but laughing at him was too much. When the results were announced, Class 4B could not believe their ears. Ali, skilled in singing, had of course qualified but so did Ahmad for the finals. How on earth did the stutterer do it They wondered.
The finals of the singing competition finally arrived. Ali’s supporters were out in full force. Mr. Mok, the principal, and some teachers caused quite a stir among the students when they turned up to support the two finalists from their school. Ali sang to the crowd’s delight. It looked like he was the clear favorite. His loud and clear voice, together with his good acting skill, made him popular among the audience.

In the heart of a small town located between rolling hills and winding rivers, there lived a teenager named Lily. From a young age, Lily understood the power of kindness. Despite facing challenges, Lily kept sharing her kindness, which inspired those around her.
She would spend her weekends volunteering at the local animal shelter, taking care of these poor pets. With warm smiles and the gentle touch of her hands on the animals, these pets tended to follow Lily when she entered the shelter. She always brought well-prepared food for them. And it wasn’t long before the animals began to trust her without fear. As she visited the animal shelter, she also talked with workers there to know more about animals.
Lily’s kindness went beyond the shelter. She made it her mission to brighten the lives of everyone she met. Whether it was lending a listening ear to a friend in need or helping an elderly neighbor, Lily’s act of kindness was like sunshine piercing (穿透) through the darkest of clouds.
Despite her busy schedule, Lily did a good job on her studies. She approached every challenge with a positive attitude, knowing that with hard work, anything was possible. Her active mind inspired her classmates to go for greatness. She offered to help those students who were struggling in their schoolwork. With Lily’s help, they focused their energy on the study. And soon they began to believe in their own abilities to have a better performance at school.
Qne day, as Lily was walking home from school, she came across a deserted community garden overrun with weeds (雜草) and littered with rubbish. Most people walked past without giving it a second look, but Lily didn’t. She saw the possibility of exploring the beauty hidden in the garden and knew she had to do something about it.

Grady and his family go camping every summer. As it was becoming hotter, here came the camping time.
Having planned the camp long, the family finally decided the destination- the Great National Forest. With food, necessities and cookers loaded onto the car, the family squeezed into the car. The car door closed, heat was shut outside.
In the car, Jared, Grady’s younger brother was playing with a toy dinosaur, making great noise. Grady’s mother talked excitedly with his father. On settling in the car, Grady put on the earphones and turned on the music. He neither wanted to join his brother nor joined any talk. After what seemed to be hours, the car stopped where they headed. Grady threw down his backpack and slammed the car door.
Grady hated camping, but it was something his family stuck to every summer. His father liked cooking over an open air, telling stories about how to survive things like bear attacks and bites of bees. His mother and Jared liked to hike and take pictures of animals. Jared had a collection of bug pictures that he had pinned to the walls in his half of their room. Grady thought they were just scary and proof that Jared was a strange kid.
They set up camp — two tents, one for his parents and one for himself and Jared. While everyone else started preparing dinner, Grady, looking for some place to cool down, set off for the nearby stream, which was deep enough to swim in.
As Grady got close to the stream, a cute bear cub caught his eye. The joyful surprise lightened up his face. Though Grady didn’t like animals, he couldn’t resist such a lovely bear cub measuring no more than two feet tall with a cute face. It was playing pretty joyfully at the edge of the stream. So absorbed was the bear cub in playing that it wasn’t aware that someone was approaching. Driven by curiosity, Grady walked on tip toe, moving closer to have a look at it.

It was raining outside, and Hollis was working on his homework in his quiet bedroom. The sound of the rain almost made him sleepy until — “thump!” — a soft noise at the window made him jump. Putting down his pencil, he walked to the window. There, just inches away on the wet windowsill (窗臺), lay a small brown sparrow (麻雀). The little bird wasn’t moving much except for its chest going up and down as it breathed. Raindrops soaked its feathers. making its tiny body look even smaller and more helpless.
Hollis reached for the window but stopped halfway. His biology teacher’s warning played in his mind like a recording: “Never touch wild birds with bare hands because they can make you sick.” He bit his lip, unsure whether to help the suffering creature or not. The sparrow turned its head slightly, and Hollis saw its shiny black eyes filled with fear. A small red spot on its wing caught his attention — was that blood His heart pounded as he imagined the bird dying alone in the cold rain. “What should I do ” he whispered to himself.
Suddenly, a gust of wind shook the window. The sparrow let out a weak chirp (鳥叫聲) Without another thought, Hollis opened the window and carefully held the bird in his hands. “It’s okay,” he murmured softly. “I’ve got you now.”
Hollis rushed to find something to keep the bird safe. Spotting an old shoebox, he placed the sparrow inside as gently as possible. Every few minutes, he would check the bird, hoping to see some improvement. Each time he checked, he whispered a few encouraging words — though whether they were meant for the bird or himself, he wasn’t quite sure. A stubborn determination settled in his chest. Whatever it took, he would help his fragile new friend.

During my sixth-grade year, my puberty (青春期) came and my voice started changing. Sometimes it’d crack (嗓音變粗). The first time it happened, I was embarrassed. I thought people around me might make fun of me since they didn’t have the same problem of uncontrolled voices.
After my first voice crack experience, trying to prevent it from happening again, I almost stopped talking. If I had to talk, I’d first clear my throat. Limiting my talking and clearing my voice before I spoke made my break and lunch experiences less stressful. Even when my voice did crack, only my closest friends would hear. My biggest fear was having a voice crack during class.
Unfortunately, one day the worst thing I had feared came. It was about halfway through the year when I was happy to have made it so long without a bad voice crack incident.
On the day it happened, everything was the same as always until I got into the classroom. When I walked through the door, the first thing I noticed was that we had a new teacher. For some classmates, seeing a new teacher was a great thing, but for me, it was a problem. Immediately started thinking about how the new teacher would need to take attendance. My previous teacher never had to. Since he already knew each student and where they sat, he just had everyone sit down in their seat, and marked the students whose seats were empty absent.
I started to panic. So many thoughts were running through my mind that I could not think straight. I calmed myself down by telling myself that I only had to say one word:“here”. Wasn’t it easy enough Well, I thought so too until my name was called. I did my normal routine; I cleared my throat, took a breath, and said, “Here!” The only problem was that while saying this, I had the worst voice crack in the history of my voice cracks.

In my freshman year of college, I had a habit of sitting in the same spot every day in my economics class. It was a comfortable little corner near the window, where the sunlight would stream in and warm the desk. I loved this spot because it gave me a sense of routine and comfort during the busy college life.
One day, as I settled into my usual seat, I noticed a new face sitting next to me. She was a foreign exchange student named Mia, who had just arrived from Italy. Her English was basic, and the most complex sentence I had heard her say was, “I love this sunny weather!” Despite the language barrier, Mia always greeted me with a bright smile and a cheerful “Morning, Alex!” every day.
Mia had a habit of spreading her belongings across my desk space. Her notebooks, snacks, and even her colourful scarf would somehow find their way onto my side. Each time I walked into class, Mia would quickly realize her mistake, flash an apologetic smile, and say, “Oh, Alex! Sorry, sorry!” while hurriedly clearing my space. She would then give a nod and ask, “Ready for class, yeah ”
Initially, I found this routine mildly annoying. I thought to myself, “Why can’t she keep her things on her side Doesn’t she know I sit here every day ” The last thing I wanted was to deal with a guy who barely spoke my language at eight in the morning. Just get your stuff off my desk!
One particularly busy morning, I arrived a few minutes late to class. As I stood outside the classroom, finishing a quick phone call, I noticed through the window that my desk was, as usual, occupied by Mia’s things. However, before I could enter, another student, also running late, walked into the room and headed straight for my seat.
I watched as Mia’s eyes followed the newcomer. Her smile faded instantly, and she sprang into action. “No, no! Sorry but this seat is for Alex!” she said anxiously in broken English, waving her hands constantly. The confused student hesitated, but Mia had already grabbed her colorful scarf from the chair and begun clearing textbooks in a hurry. Her cheeks went pink as she patted the newly emptied space, looking toward the doorway where I stood. “Alex’s place, and he is coming” she repeated firmly. I froze, phone still pressed to my ear, suddenly understanding why my corner always stayed vacant despite the crowded lectures.

A prom (畢業舞會) is an event that every student is dreaming of. And if they’re not dreaming of it, they’re certainly looking forward to it. It’s the young boys’ and girls’ chance to spend a beautiful night with their schoolmates and friends, an opportunity to have fun, dance, and enjoy themselves before their school years come to an end.
For young Dakota Wollan, the prom night was not something he couldn’t wait for. In fact, he had no idea who to ask to go with him to the special event. When Dakota told his parents that he didn’t have anyone in mind, his dad had an idea. He figured, since Dakota’s great-grandma Madeline had never been to a prom, it would be fun to share this experience with her great-grandson.
When Dakota heard the suggestion, he felt it would be an honor and unforgettable night for them both to take his beloved great-grandma! So, he decided to ask his great-grandma with a proper proposal (舞會邀約). “I have this old truck she gave me. It’s a 1985 truck she handed down to me and I got it running again. So, I took that truck and made a sign,” he recalled. When the 92-year-old woman saw the sign, she was shocked. She couldn’t find a reason why a young man would want to spend such a special night with an elderly lady.
But she said “yes”. After all, Dakota had made it clear that if she didn’t go, he wouldn’t go either. So, she really didn’t have an option.
Madeline explained that she only attended high school for one year and a half, because her father got sick and she had to help on the farm. In fact, she didn’t even remember if there was such a thing back at her time. So, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to find out what this prom is all about.

I was pretty proud of my idea for a secret signal (信號) with my little sister Ariella.
“OK, Ariella, show me the signal,” I said, excited. She pinched (捏住) her nose. “Right! Whenever you see me at school, you do it.” Ariella nodded her head but asked, “Why do I have to do that when I see you ” “Well, it’s a cool way for a kid to say hi to her older brother,” I said firmly. Actually, I had decided it was the perfect way to avoid something really embarrassing, like a hug or a kiss, or hearing “I love you!” yelled in front of my friends.
At school, I didn’t see Ariella until gym class. At that time, our gym teacher, Mr. Schwartz, was showing us how many sit-ups he could do when Ariella and her classmates walked by and spotted me. Then she grabbed her nose. Mr. Schwartz frowned. “Young lady, this is a gym class after all. A little sweat isn’t a bad thing!” Frightened, Ariella dropped her hand. I nodded a quick hello, but Ariella didn’t notice.
The next time I saw Ariella was at lunch. Just as Mrs. Watson was offering a spoonful of spinach (菠菜) to Ariella, I was passing by to return my tray (托盤). Ariella saw me and pinched her nose again. “Does it smell that bad ” Mrs. Watson chuckled. Ariella hesitated, “But…” “It’s OK. I don’t love spinach either.” Mrs. Watson whispered. Ariella shot me a glare, and I mouthed “sorry.”
As the day was almost over, I was called to the principal’s office. My heart racing, I feared the signals had caused trouble. However, I was asked to take the bus permission slip (小紙條) to Ariella. She was listening to a story at her classroom. Upon arrival, I requested her teacher, Ms. Brown, to give her the note. At the sound of my voice, Ariella smiled and opened her mouth as if to speak. But instead, she made the signal. Pinch!

Last weekend, my family and I went on a trip to the countryside. The air was fresh, and the trees moved gently in the wind. It was a peaceful place, far from the noise of the city. We walked along a small path, enjoying the songs of birds. The sunlight came through the trees, making beautiful golden spots on the ground. It felt like we had stepped into a magical world.
As we walked, I suddenly heard a weak chirping (鳥叫) sound. I stopped and listened carefully. The sound was coming from the bushes nearby. Curious, I moved closer and saw a small bird lying on the ground. Its feathers were messy, and one of its wings seemed to be injured. Its tiny black eyes were filled with fear and pain.
Without thinking, I picked up the bird. It trembled (顫抖) in my hands. My parents came over and looked at the poor bird. “Let’s help it,” my mother said. We decided to make a temporary nest for the bind. My father found some dry leaves and soft grass, while my little sister carefully placed some feathers she had picked up along the way. We created a small, warm bed for the bird under a big tree.
Then, I ran back to our car and took out our first-aid kit. With careful hands, I cleaned the small wound on its wing and wrapped it with a tiny piece of soft cloth. The bird seemed to feel better.
Just as I thought everything was fine, dark clouds gathered in the sky. A storm was coming. I became worried about the little bird. If heavy rain fell, it might not survive the night. My father suggested taking it with us until the storm passed. I carefully placed the bird in a small basket with soft grass inside and carried it back to our cottage.
That night, as the rain poured outside, I kept the bird close and fed it tiny grains my mother found in the kitchen. Slowly, it seemed to trust me. By morning, the storm had passed. The bird looked much stronger. We decided it was time to return it to the forest.

At the opening ceremony of the campus basketball cultural festival, the spotlight was flashing and the music was exciting. The entire gym was immersed in a warm and lively atmosphere. The members of the school basketball team, dressed in brand-new uniforms, made a brilliant entrance in the cheers of the crowd. However, only the team captain, Liam, had a slightly heavy step and his eyes were filled with worry. He was well aware that the upcoming city-wide high school basketball league was a huge challenge for this team, which had been in decline recently.
After the opening ceremony, with anxiety overwhelming him, Liam dragged his heavy feet towards the coach’s office. Coach Johnson sat in his office, the dim light casting shadows across the walls decorated with medals and photographs of his basketball-winning teams. Liam, stepped inside, his eyes filled with uncertainty. “Coach, I need your advice. The team’s been struggling, and I don’t know how to bring them together.”
Coach Johnson smiled, motioning (示意) for Liam to take a seat. “Let me tell you a story,” he began, his voice soft and reliable. “When I was about your age, I was part of a basketball team that faced challenges similar to yours,” he said, his eyes distant with memory. “We were talented, but we lacked the trust that true teamwork requires. We played for individual glory, not for each other. As a result, we found ourselves losing basketball games we should have won, our potential unrealized. One day, our coach pulled us aside and shared a profound (深刻的) truth: ‘The heart of team work lies not in the scoreboard, but in the bonds with one another. When you play for each other, when you lift each other up, you become unstoppable. ‘From that moment on, we shifted our focus. We started playing for each other, celebrating our teammates’ successes as if they were our own. We picked each other up when we stumbled, and we faced challenges as a united group.”
Liam’s eyes widened with understanding, a glimmer of hope sparking within him.

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a small village in the heart of a big forest. Surrounded by the splendid mountains, the villagers adapted to their daily life, and none of them had any desire to learn or try something new-except for a girl named Hannah.
Hannah was an adventurous spirit with an imagination far beyond her time. She loved to explore and would spend hours in the woods searching for new discoveries. She loved to create stories in her head and often imagined herself as one of the characters in them.
One afternoon, while setting out on her adventure, Hannah found an abandoned cottage. As she opened the door, she was left shocked: Before her was a room filled with books! Books shining in the dust and enjoying the warm sunlight were just waiting to be explored. Hannah picked two books and decided to read them at home.
On her way back, she came across her friends and enthusiastically shared her finding, but what greeted her was roars of laughter! Despite feeling confused and slightly hurt, she didn’t abandon her books. That evening, she was absorbed in the adventurous tales hidden within the covers. The following day, she hurriedly finished her breakfast and made her way back to the cottage.
Hannah read the books attentively. They were incredibly attractive, filled with narratives about diverse creatures. Each page was just an adventure waiting to be undertaken. Hannah’s imagination transported her to a world of talking animals, mystical creatures and adventurous nights. She read about characters who challenged difficult times with their determination and characters who strove for good.
The little girl was so inspired by the books that the characters became her teachers. She not only learned about the power of love and friendship but also discovered that true strength lies within oneself.

My fingers touched the sick bandages(繃帶) covering my eyes. The physical pain had faded, but the memory hadn’t—the sudden fire of the car, the trapped child’s screams, my desperate rush to save her. Now darkness wrapped my world, and light never came.
Nightfall brought a visitor. “Your courage and kindness moved me. You are a hero.” a woman’s voice stated softly. “I don’t want pity!” I said in a weak voice, turning my back to her. Maybe I couldn’t see the sunlight forever, tears rolling down my cheeks. At that time, someone wiped away my tears. No voice. That night grew late. As I struggled to step out of my room towards the bathroom, a firm hand caught my arm—steady and determined.
“You again Are you a nurse ” I asked with the doubts that had been wandering in my mind.
“Yeah. Call me Lena.” she replied, her voice warm. Who could imagine she would change my life
Form that moment, Lena’s voice became my compass—guiding me through endless corridors, describing the golden sunlight through windows, insisting I’d “see” again. Gradually, we began sharing stories and dreams, which created an atmosphere filled with laughter and warmth. When listening to her, I could see the weight of my loneliness and fear of losing sight slowly lifting. It was as if her companionship had produced a spark(火花) within me. Our friendship became a source of joy for me, turning my lonely days into moments full of laughter and hope. Lena taught me about resilience (韌性), love, and the importance of bravery. I felt a strong sense of gratitude.
One day, she suddenly grabbed my shoulder tightly. “They’re testing electronic eyes—operations that make the blind see again. Volunteers are needed.” Her voice trembled with excitement. “Why me ” I whispered, brushing my bandages. Her hand rested gently over mine. “Because heroes don’t just save others—they fight to save themselves too.” The words hung in my head till I entered the operating room with Lena.

In the mid-afternoon, my friend Theresa phoned me and said excitedly, “I got a bike!” “A bike for Christmas ” I asked. I was confused because she already had a bike — a ten-speed. But she explained her landlady (女房東) had cleaned out a garage (車庫) and offered her a child’s bike. We lived just a few blocks from each other, so I drove over to see it. It was a girl’s pink bike with a bell, a basket and a banana seat. It wasn’t new and was thick with dust, needing much time to get cleaned, but it was in quite good condition.
Theresa was a tall woman, and this was a child’s bike. There was no way she could ever ride it, but it still excited her. “I was just so happy to get a bike, like when I was a little kid,” she said cheerfully.
“But you can’t ride it,” I said and asked what she was going to do with it. “I’m not sure. Maybe, I’ll just give it to my brother’s daughter as a Christmas gift,” she answered. “But I know she already has a bike which is also in good condition,” I replied. “Yeah. But this one is more beautiful than hers. Besides, having another bike will surely make her proud and enable her to be admired by her little friends,” she laughed.
Suddenly, I thought of my co-worker, John, who was a single father raising three children: an older boy, another around twelve, and an eight-year-old daughter. Life was very hard for the family. His eldest boy often looked after the younger kids while John was at work. It was quite difficult for John to buy food and get Christmas gifts for his kids.
I wished Theresa would send the bike to John’s daughter. But I feared Theresa wouldn’t agree and would feel offended (被冒犯).

On the journey of life, Father’s love is like a lighthouse, quietly guiding and protecting us through the stormy seas and the calm waters. My dad was a cleaner in my school. When I was12, I decided to study hard to have a life different from his.
One day when Dad asked me to play basketball with him, I just replied, “I’m busy. I want to work hard so that I can become a rich man. I don’t want to be a cleaner like you, Dad!” He was shocked, but I didn’t care and continued studying hard. Finally, I graduated from high school with honors, and decided it was time to break free from my dad and follow my dreams.
“Dad, I got a scholarship (獎學金) to a law school in California,” I told him. “I’ll leave in three days.” My dad was surprised but proud of me. As I left for the airport three days later, he said, “Son, wherever you go, welcome back home.” I ignored his words and flew to California.
After I graduated, I found a great job there. Later, I became a manager and earned much money. I no longer remembered my father was a cleaner. I had forgotten my dad, who was still, cleaning my school, I seldom answered his calls, sent him a message or wrote back to him. I was busy; I still had a lot more to achieve.
With time, the more success I tasted, somehow, the lonelier I became. I felt especially lonely on my 31st birthday. I kept checking my phone, hoping someone wished me a happy birthday. But there wasn’t a single call or message. Later that evening when I returned home from my office, something in my mailbox drew my attention.
“A letter ” I whispered and saw it was from my father. He never forgot to mail me a letter for each of my birthdays. However, I never took the trouble to read it. “How did I ignore him ” I thought. I brought the letter home and took out his earlier letters. And I opened one. It read, “Wherever you are, I love you forever. I wish you a happy life.”

Half a year ago, fat and lazy, I was in low spirits. During a free and easy gathering, as I struggled to button my over-sized T-shirt, my friends made fun of me, their sharp remarks about my “jiggling belly” and “elephant-like posture” cutting through the air like knives, though they said it was harmless joking. My face burned hotter than the sun as their imitations (模仿) of my walk drew attention from strangers, turning what should have been a joyful reunion into an embarrassment (尷尬) that is still fresh in my memory.
Looking at the figure in the mirror, I realized myself out of shape, no wonder they were making fun of me! “I have to lose weight and keep fit,” I promised to myself, “no matter what.”
Act on it! The next morning, I equipped myself with sports clothes and went out into the park, starting running. Yet everything was quite different from what I had imagined. Half an hour seemed so long and the path seemed endless. In a short while, I was out of breath, sweat down my face, legs aching. I stopped to take a breath, full of doubts on my decision.
I was at the point of giving up when my neighbor, Jean, came into view, who was walking her dog in the park. “Hi, Adam. Are you free recently ” “Yes, a bit.” I answered. “Would you mind walking Amy, my little Pomeranian, every morning for one week when I am out on business ” “Walking a dog is a good workout, much easier than running.” I thought to myself. “My pleasure” was my reply.

He sang with such rich feelings and his movements were appropriate and well harmonious.

He quickly set up a small, cozy corner in the shoebox with some soft tissues. Then, he found some bird food at a nearby store. Every few hours, he carefully fed the sparrow with a tiny dropper, making sure not to hurt it. As days passed, the sparrow gradually got better. Its weak chirps became louder, and the red spot on its wing started to fade. Hollis was overjoyed to see the progress.
Three weeks later, the sparrow was completely healed, lively and healthy again. Hollis knew it was time to let it go back to the wild. With a bit of sadness in his heart, he carried the shoebox outside. He opened the box, and the sparrow hopped out onto his hand. It looked at Hollis with those shiny black eyes as if saying thank you. Then, with a flutter of its wings, it took off into the blue sky. Some classmates started to giggle, and I could hear whispers around me. The new teacher looked a bit surprised but quickly regained her composure. She calmly said, “It’s okay. Everyone goes through this during puberty.” Her words made me feel a little better, but I still couldn't shake off the embarrassment. I sat there, keeping my head down, and didn’t dare to look up for the rest of the class.
A break finally came, and I walked out of the classroom in a bad mood. I was still thinking about the embarrassing moment just now. Suddenly, I heard someone calling my name. It was the new teacher. She walked towards me with a kind smile on her face. “Don’t be too hard on yourself,” she said. “Voice cracks are just a normal part of growing up. Everyone will experience it. You don’t need to be so worried.” Her words were like a warm breeze, soothing my wounded pride. I felt grateful to her. Eventually, the big day came and the pair were ready to have the time of their lives. Dakota helped his great-grandma into his restored 1985 truck, her eyes sparkling with excitement. As they arrived at the hall, students turned to stare, whispers spreading through the crowd. But soon, their curiosity turned into admiration. The music began, and Dakota gently took Madeline’s hand, guiding her to the dance floor. Though her steps were slow, her laughter filled the room. Other students joined them, forming a circle to cheer for the extraordinary partners. Tears welled up in Madeline’s eyes as she whispered, “I never imagined I’d experience something so magical.” The touching scene was quietly filmed.
Such an inspiring moment was posted on social networking sites. The video of Dakota and Madeline dancing spread like wildfire overnight, with millions praising the teen’s kindness. News outlets interviewed the family, and Madeline became a local heroine. “This isn’t just about prom,” Dakota said in an interview. “It’s about honoring those who missed their chances to shine.” The school later announced a new tradition: inviting senior citizens to proms. Years later, Madeline’s prom photo still sat proudly on her dresser, a reminder that love goes beyond generations — and that it’s never too late to create memories.

To my great surprise, Ariella’s classmates copied her signal. One by one, the kids around her began pinching their noses, their eyes darting between Ariella and me with a mix of curiosity and amusement. Almost instantly, the room erupted into a sea of pinched noses, with waves of laughter spreading. “Hush! Put down your fingers!” Ms. Brown looked puzzled and tried to figure out what story was behind this funny signal. As the class got quiet, Ariella explained, “It’s just the way I say hi to him. It’s our secret code for…” She lowered her voice to a whisper. “I love you!” All the kids started laughing all over again. My heart racing, I felt my face burning with embarrassment. I knew I had to escape the situation before it got worse, so I quickly turned and hurried out of the classroom.
After school, Ariella met me by the bus and begged. “Can we use a different signal tomorrow ” I looked at her, feeling guilty for the trouble our signal had caused. “Sure, we can come up with something else.” I said firmly. On the bus ride home, we started to brainstorm ideas, laughing and experimenting with different signals. Finally, I suggested, “How about a simple thumbs-up ” Ariella nodded, giving me a thumbs-up and I returned it with a subtle wink. I felt relieved that we had found a new signal, which wouldn’t make both of us embarrassed. It was a small change, but it showed how much I cared about my little sister. By the time we got home, we had practiced our new signal, which was simple but ours. It dawned on me that no matter what signal we used, what mattered most was the love and connection it represented. From then on, I decided to be more open to Ariella’s love in front of friends. Maybe a simple hello or a hug wasn’t so bad after all.

We went back to the same place where we had found the bird and carefully placed it on the soft grass. As soon as it touched the ground, it shook its wings a little. Just then, we saw two adult birds fly down from the trees. They chirped loudly and landed beside the little bird. One of them gently touched the small bird with its beak, as if to encourage it to move. The little bird slowly stood up and joined the adults. We watched quietly, happy to see the little bird back with its family, knowing we had helped it survive.
As we were about to leave, the two adult birds followed us for a short way. They stayed close, moving around us and chirping softly. It was as though they were saying thank you for saving their child. I couldn’t help but smile, feeling a warmth in my heart. It reminded me of how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Sometimes, a little care and attention can change everything. Just like the bird, every small thing we do can help those we love, and together, we can create something beautiful. (159 words)

Liam nodded, a newfound determination settling in his chest. He decided to put Coach Johnson’s advice into action right away. The next day, he called the team together before practice. Instead of talking about skills or plays, he asked everyone to share their thoughts and goals. At first, the players were shy, but soon they began to open up. Through honest talks, they started to understand and support each other more. Liam made sure every voice was heard and every effort was appreciated. During training, he encouraged teamwork over personal success. Slowly, the team spirit grew stronger. Players began to trust one another, work harder, and enjoy the game again.
Here came the key basketball game of the season. The gym was full, and the energy was high. As the game started, it was clear this was no longer the same struggling team. They moved as one — passing with trust, defending with unity, and playing with heart. When mistakes happened, there were no angry words, only helping hands. Even under pressure, they stayed calm and focused on supporting each other. In the final minutes, they faced a tough lead change, but instead of panicking, they stayed united. With one last play, Liam passed the ball to the right teammate, and the crowd cheered not just for the win, but for the team spirit that made it possible.
