Will listening to Mozart really make me smarter Yes, but no more than listening to Justin Bieber. The misbelief that there’s something unique about Mozart’s ability to increase brainpower began in 1993, with a paper in Nature. Neurobiologista Gordon Shaw, Frances Rauacher and Katherine Ky of the University of Califomnia at Irvine found that students who listened to 10 minutes of a Mozart sonata showed a temporary increase in certain thinking skills, as measured by an IQ teat. The public were fascinated by the romantie idea that listening to Mozart would make them smarter, and Don Campbell, a teacher and music educator from Texas, composed his international bestseller The Motart Effect on the basis of this iden.
But Glenn Schellenberg, a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, says that there is no Mozart effect. Any number of experiences besides listening to music might improve thinking ability. Most people find the music of Mozart pleasant to listen to, and it might increase dopamine (多巴胺) levels in the brain, which is generally thought to improve thinking. But “eating chocolate might have the same effect,” Schellenberg says.
In 2010, a team of Austrian researchers analyaed the results from 39 attempts to copy the Mozart effect. In most experiments, a group of subjects listened to a Mozart sonata before testing their thinking skills. Scientists then compared the results against a control group that had not heard music. The researchers’ findings were neatly summed up in their paper’s title Mosart Effect Schmozart Effect.
This isn’t to say that listening to music can’t give the brain a promotion. Catherine Noelle O’Shea and David Wolf of the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston recently found that doctors who listened to Mozart before sereening patients for colon polyps (結腸息肉) found more polyps than those who didn’t. Classical music probably made the doctors feel good, thus improving performance. If the doctors had been Bieber fans, it might have been better to play them some of his hits.
8. What was believed by the public in 1993
A. Mozart was smarter than Justin Bieber.
B. Smarter students liked listening to music.
C. Listening to Mozart would improve brainpower.
D. Don Campbell ereated the theory of Mozart effect.
9. Why does the author mention “eating chocolate” in paragraph 2
A. To warn. B. To argue.
C. To inform. D. To enlertain.
10. What is the main point of the paper titled “Mozart Effect Schmozart Effect”
A. The unreliability of the Mozart effeet.
B. The scientifie basis of the Mozart effect.
C. The historical background of the Mozart effeet.
D. The widespread acceplance of the Mozart effeet.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards listening to music
A Uncaring. B. Negative.
C. Unclear. D. Favorable.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. D

A rare look inside the human brain might help to explain how it clears away waste. Scientists say the failure to clear away such waste can lead to Alzheimer’s disease and other brain disorders.
Brain cells use a lot of nutrients (營養). This means they produce a lot of waste. Scientists believe the brain has special systems to take out this waste, especially during sleep. They have reported observing this process happening in mice. But they had no clear evidence that this happens in humans.
Recently published research appears to have identified a system, or network, of very small waste-clearing channels in the brains of living humans. The researchers used a scanning technology to study the network. One of the researchers was Dr. Juan Piantino of Oregon Health & Science University. Piantino said the new research was important evidence. “We needed this piece to say this happens in humans too.” he said.
His team recently published its findings in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The brain is very active during sleep. During sleeping hours, the brain appears to clean itself. The idea has gotten the attention of researchers. A night’s sleep deprivation can cause people’s thinking to be unclear.
But how does the brain clean itself Over 12 years ago, scientists at the University of Rochester first reported finding a network they named the “glymphatic system.” Fluid (液體) from the brain, called cerebrospinal fluid, travels through channels surrounding blood vessels (血管) to carry waste out of the brain. It is not clear exactly how the system works. However, some research has shown that the movement of blood vessels might help move the waste-clearing fluid where it needs to go. Finding the system in humans is not easy. Regular MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scans can show some of the fluid-filled channels.
12. What kind of process did scientists observe in mice’s brains
A. They remove waste during sleep.
B. They produce more waste during sleep.
C. They use more nutrients during sleep.
D. They stop producing waste during sleep.
13. What does the underlined word in paragruph 4 refer to
A. Increase. B. Decline.
C. Loss. D. Difficulty.
14. How is the waste in a human’s brain cleared
A. It is taken in as nutrients by the body.
B. It is changed into fluid flowing out of the brain.
C. It is carried out of the brain through the blood vessels.
D. It is taken out of the brain along certain paths around blood vessels.
15. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To present a study. B. To reason a theory.
C. To share experiences. D. To persuade readers.

47. 閱讀下面材料,根據其內容和所給段落開頭語續寫兩段,使之構成一篇完整的短文。
As the fifth of seven children, I went to the same public school as my three older sisters and brother. Every year, my mother went to the same conference and had parent and child interviews with the same teachers. The only different thing was the child. And every child participated in an old school tradition-the annual plant sale held in early May, just in time for Mother’s Day.
Third grade was the first time that I was allowed to take part in the plant sale. The idea of surprising my mother with a beautiful geranium (天竺葵) exeited me greatly. However, I didn’t have any money. Worried and determined, I went to my eldest sister and shared the secret with her. Without hesitation, she gave me some money, smiling warmly and encouraging me to find the perfect plant.
At the plant sale, I carefully made my selection, comparing each one closely. I wrestled with that decision, inspecting each plant closely to ensure that I had indeed found the best geranium. The responsibility of choosing the right gift for my mother made my heart race with excitement and nervousness.
Once I had carried it home, with the help of my sister, I hid it on the upstairs neighbor’s porch (門廊). The secrecy of the mission added to the thrill, but I was very afraid my mother would find it before Mother’s Day. My sister, noticing my anxiety, assured me with a confident nod and a gentle pat on the shoulder that she wouldn’t, and indeed she did not. When Mother’s Day arrived, I was bursting with pride when I gave her that geranium. I remember how bright her eyes were and how delighted she was with my gift.
The year I was fifteen, my younger sister reached third grade. In early May she came to me full of wonder and secrecy and told me that there was going to be a plant sale at school.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
And she wanted to surprise our mother. Just like I did years ago, she was both excited and worried because she had no money. I saw myself in her and without a second thought, I gave her some money. I told her to pick the most beautiful geranium. She was so happy and her eyes sparkled with excitement. She went to the plant sale, carefully choosing among all the plants. After a long time of comparison, she finally found the perfect one. Then, she hid it in a secret place, waiting eagerly for Mother’s Day.
Paragraph 2:
I was there when my younger sister gave our mother the geranium. Mother’s face lit up the moment she saw the flower. She looked at my sister with so much love and pride in her eyes. My sister was beaming with joy, too. It was a touching moment. I realized that this simple plant sale tradition had passed on the love between generations in our family. It was a small thing, but it held so much warmth and meaning.武漢市部分重點中學2024-2025學年度下學期期中聯考高一英語

Samsung introduced a system called Samsung Vision Al for its line of OLED and QLED TV models. The company said the AI tools are meant to tur the TVs into more “intelligent” assistive devices and to help “simplify and enrich everyday living” for its users. One example is a feature that permits users to click on different screen elements to receive immediate information about what they see. The company said another tool makes it possible to activate live language translations on screens.
Aircraft carrier vehicle
Chinese automaker XPENG launched a system called a Land Aircraft Carrier. It includes a large transport vehicle with enough space to transport a flying car inside. The idea is for users to be able to launch the flying car from any where the vehicle can go. The flying car, planned to sell at a price of about $300,000, is fully autonomous and can carry two people at a time. XPENG said it will aim to increase production for all its vehicles in the coming year.
Salt increasing spoon
Japanese drink producer Kirin Holdings introduced a new product that aims to strengthen the taste of salt in food products without increasing the amount of salt. After I broke up with my husband, I remember finding outI wasn’t going to get child support. We don’t have kids, but I still wanted child support, you know I wanted inner child support. And so I was crying and crying and hugging my mom and she hugged me back and said,“Sarah, don’t sweat the small things. And guess what It’s all small things.” And I was like, “Mom — that’s the sign above the couch.” I turned around and pointed it out to her. “Did you just read that to me ” That’s when I realized that my mom has just been reading the decorations around the house to give me advice.
Once I called her and said I didn’t know if I’d ever get married again. When I called my mom to tell her that I’d lost the right to pet my sweet dog, Stella, she said, “Sarah, when the tough gets going — let me call you back, I’m in the car.” I’m prelty sure she was trying to read a bumper sticker (保險杠貼紙).
Whether the saying was sitting right in front of her in the form of a book, or a plaque (匾額), or a bumper sticker,or not, my mom has always been fond of sayings.
For my mom’s birthday the next year, I got her a plaque that says “It is what it is.” I got it as a joke because it’s the most overused phrase in the book. I thought she’d laugh. Instead, she loved it. She hungit above the mirror in the hallway next to the powder room. At least now when I call her and she says,“It is what it is,” I know exactly where she’s sitting.
