The Best Italian Carnivals Beyond Venice
Storico Carnevale di Ivrea, Piedmont

Carnevale di Fano, Marche
Not only is this one of Italy’s oldest Carnival celebrations, dating back to at least 1347, it’s also the sweetest. It takes place in Fano, a seaside town in the country’s centre, over three continuous Sundays between February and March, and each day sees floats parading down the same street three times, featuring a traditional, characteristic getto—the “throwing” of chocolate and sugary treats down to the public.
Carnevale di Putignano, Puglia
Tradition has it that this Apulian celebration started in 1394. Beginning on 26 December, Carnevale di Putignano runs until late February, making it Italy’s longest carnival. The main events, masked processions and float parades, are held on Thursdays, but there are themed exhibitions, papier-maché (紙膠混合物) workshops and shows programmed throughout the entire festive period.

Phil Hanley stood in a studio, preparing himself up to record the final section of his book, Spellbound. It was his 60th hour in the booth at his publisher's office. The average recording length for a 7.5-hour audiobook is 15 hours. But because Hanley has severe dyslexia (閱讀障礙), the process was extended. And complicated. And emotional. Hanley was an unlikely candidate to write a book in the first place. He has a solid career as a comedian, but he's not a huge reader. The chingolo is one of the 4,000 known species of songbirds in the world. While some parts of its song are genetically conditioned, in the case of the male chingolo, it’s learned from a tutor, most often the father. The young bird learns to sing a song that combines the family song with the population’s song — like a fingerprint, but learned. It serves to attract the female and protect its territory.
Scientist Fernando Nottebohm handwrote the most popular songs heard in Pereyra Iraola Park in the 1960s, which caused an investigation to find which of the hits from the 1960s are still being sung. A team went to the park, recorded the songs and discovered that only three classic songs were still being sung in the area. One possible reason for this is the urbanization of the area surrounding the park, which has displaced much of the local chingolo population; another is that over the years, the park has been invaded (入侵) by other singing bird species that have taken over the chingolos’ territory.
After deciding to recover the tunes that had disappeared, the scientists produced synthetic (合成的) copies of the bird’s song and played them to the chingolos in the same park. Chingolos keep their vocal practice and fine-tune (微調) their song based on the learned model. Surprisingly, the robotic tutor had been chosen by some young chingolos, who learned the extinct song and combined it with their own songs.
The song acquired by the young alternated between syllables with increasing and decreasing frequencies, in line with the synthetic theme. However, the last syllable had a wider frequency range than the synthetic version — a characteristic shared by all adults recorded in the park. This variation seems to be the distinctive mark of the “dialect” of this chingolo population, possibly acquired from other real tutors or as an expression of the species’ genetic programming.
It’s like rescuing an ancient and forgotten language. The loss of individuals means not only the reduction of genetic diversity but also the loss of true cultures. With mathematical equations (方程) that we transform into sound waves, we can ensure that this culture is not lost.

Artificial muscles don’t just get robots moving, but one day, they could support people at work or when walking, or replace injured muscle tissue. However, developing artificial muscles that can compare to the real thing is a major technical challenge. In order to keep up with their biological counterparts (對應物), artificial muscles must not only be powerful, but also stretchable and soft.
At their core, artificial muscles are so-called actuators, components that transform electrical impulses into movement. Actuators are used wherever something moves at the push of a button, whether at home, in a car engine or in highly developed industrial plants. However, these hard mechanical components do not have much in common with muscles just yet.
A team of researchers is working on actuators made of soft materials. Now, for the first time, they have developed a method for producing such complex components using a 3D printer. The so-called dielectric elastic actuators (DEA) consist of two different materials: a conductive electrode (電極) material and a non-conductive material, which interlock in layers, like interlacing (交錯) fingers. If an electrical voltage (電壓) is applied to the electrodes, the actuator contracts like a muscle. When the voltage is switched off, it relaxes to its original position.
3D printing such a structure is not trivial. Despite their very different electrical characters, the two soft materials should behave very similarly during the printing process. They should not mix but must still hold together in the finished actuator. The printed “muscles” must be as soft as possible so that an electrical motivation can cause the required shapes. Added to this are the requirements that all 3D printable materials must fulfill: They must liquidize under pressure so that they can be pressed out of the printer nozzle (噴嘴). Immediately thereafter, however, they should be sticky enough to keep the printed shape. These characters are often in direct contradiction. If researchers improve one of them, three others change, usually for the worse.
In teamwork with other experts, researchers have succeeded in adjusting many of these contradictory properties. The aim of their project is to develop a glove that is designed to copy the grasping of objects through resistance.

Phil Hanley stood in a studio, preparing himself up to record the final section of his book, Spellbound. It was his 60th hour in the booth at his publisher's office. The average recording length for a 7.5-hour audiobook is 15 hours. But because Hanley has severe dyslexia (閱讀障礙), the process was extended. And complicated. And emotional. The chingolo is one of the 4,000 known species of songbirds in the world. While some parts of its song are genetically conditioned, in the case of the male chingolo, it’s learned from a tutor, most often the father. The young bird learns to sing a song that combines the family song with the population’s song — like a fingerprint, but learned. It serves to attract the female and protect its territory.
Scientist Fernando Nottebohm handwrote the most popular songs heard in Pereyra Iraola Park in the 1960s, which caused an investigation to find which of the hits from the 1960s are still being sung. A team went to the park, recorded the songs and discovered that only three classic songs were still being sung in the area. One possible reason for this is the urbanization of the area surrounding the park, which has displaced much of the local chingolo population; another is that over the years, the park has been invaded (入侵) by other singing bird species that have taken over the chingolos’ territory.
After deciding to recover the tunes that had disappeared, the scientists produced synthetic (合成的) copies of the bird’s song and played them to the chingolos in the same park. Chingolos keep their vocal practice and fine-tune (微調) their song based on the learned model. Surprisingly, the robotic tutor had been chosen by some young chingolos, who learned the extinct song and combined it with their own songs.
The song acquired by the young alternated between syllables with increasing and decreasing frequencies, in line with the synthetic theme. However, the last syllable had a wider frequency range than the synthetic version — a characteristic shared by all adults recorded in the park. This variation seems to be the distinctive mark of the “dialect” of this chingolo population, possibly acquired from other real tutors or as an expression of the species’ genetic programming.
It’s like rescuing an ancient and forgotten language. The loss of individuals means not only the reduction of genetic diversity but also the loss of true cultures. With mathematical equations (方程) that we transform into sound waves, we can ensure that this culture is not lost.

Artificial muscles don’t just get robots moving, but one day, they could support people at work or when walking, or replace injured muscle tissue. However, developing artificial muscles that can compare to the real thing is a major technical challenge. In order to keep up with their biological counterparts (對應物), artificial muscles must not only be powerful, but also stretchable and soft.
At their core, artificial muscles are so-called actuators, components that transform electrical impulses into movement. Actuators are used wherever something moves at the push of a button, whether at home, in a car engine or in highly developed industrial plants. However, these hard mechanical components do not have much in common with muscles just yet.
A team of researchers is working on actuators made of soft materials. Now, for the first time, they have developed a method for producing such complex components using a 3D printer. The so-called dielectric elastic actuators (DEA) consist of two different materials: a conductive electrode (電極) material and a non-conductive material, which interlock in layers, like interlacing (交錯) fingers. If an electrical voltage (電壓) is applied to the electrodes, the actuator contracts like a muscle. When the voltage is switched off, it relaxes to its original position.
3D printing such a structure is not trivial. Despite their very different electrical characters, the two soft materials should behave very similarly during the printing process. They should not mix but must still hold together in the finished actuator. The printed “muscles” must be as soft as possible so that an electrical motivation can cause the required shapes. Added to this are the requirements that all 3D printable materials must fulfill: They must liquidize under pressure so that they can be pressed out of the printer nozzle (噴嘴). Immediately thereafter, however, they should be sticky enough to keep the printed shape. These characters are often in direct contradiction. If researchers improve one of them, three others change, usually for the worse.
In teamwork with other experts, researchers have succeeded in adjusting many of these contradictory properties. The aim of their project is to develop a glove that is designed to copy the grasping of objects through resistance.
