This new school year, I wanted my love for my students to be super adaptive, a little bit blind, and similar to the kind of love a mother gives to her children. I wanted a love that could put up with unappealing personalities and behaviors, which had the ability to lead to my “I wish he or she was not in my class” response, with humor, peace, and curiosity.
I decided to go toward the most difficult students with additional kindness, rather than backing away in frustration when my former attempts to change them failed. The changes in my education were faint yet definite. I had always taken students aside when they made poor decisions. But my new plan asked questions that were free of scolding or shame, and more gentle and sincere. Although my love plan was designed to improve my students’ school experience, it completely improved mine as well. It worked magic on my relationships with students and energized me for the school day. My difficult students represented puzzles to solve and relationships to improve, not frightening trouble that would exhaust my joy. Letting go of the assumption that their behaviors must be purposive choices, I was able to avoid feelings of resentment(怨恨) when my students made mistakes. I felt more peaceful and less angry.
Loving my students also got easier as the year progressed. I wondered whether my approach would work in the long run. Now it turns out that love brings love.

The government of the Marshall Islands has protected a huge area of ocean around two remote atolls(偏遠(yuǎn)環(huán)礁). This measure is intended to protect important marine(海洋的) and bird life. The government says this is their first marine protected area(MPA), but it won't be their last.
The new MPA sets aside 48,000 square kilometers of ocean where no fishing is allowed. That's larger than the area of Denmark or the Netherlands. The protected area surrounds two remote atolls: Bikar Atoll and Bokak Atoll. No one lives on the two atolls, which are far away from the rest of the Marshall Islands, so the oceans around them are in excellent shape.
In 2023, scientists from National Geographic’ s Pristine Seas project worked with experts in the Marshall Islands to study the area that's now protected. The group made452 dives and spent over 640 hours underwater. Enric Sala, who started the Pristine Seas project, calls the area a “time machine” and says that the coral reefs(珊瑚礁) around the atolls are so healthy that diving there is “l(fā)ike diving in the ocean of 1,000 years ago”.
The underwater life near the atolls includes different kinds of fish and many deep-sea sharks. The researchers say that there may even be marine life there that scientists have never seen before. Moreover, the area contains the largest nesting(筑巢) site for green turtles in the Marshall Islands. It hosts more seabirds than any other place in the country.
The government of the Marshall Islands believes protecting sea life in this large area will also help marine life outside the protected area. And that will help local fishermen and others who depend on the sea. “Our future depends on protecting our ocean,” says Glen Joseph, who leads the group responsible for protecting the waters of the Marshall Islands.

France has banned smart phone use in primary and secondary schools since 2018, arguing that it helps children focus, limits social-media use, and reduces cyber bullying. The Netherlands followed in January 2024, and Hungary soon after. Britain is now considering a similar ban. But will such measures improve students' mental health
The problem is evident. A 2021 report from America's surgeon general found that between 2009 and 2019, persistent hopelessness among high-school students increased by 40%, while the number considering depression rose by 36%. Nearly half of mental-health disorders that emerge in adolescence persist into adulthood. Smart phones, often seen as the cause, provide easy access to social media, where comparison, cyber bullying, and addiction are almost everywhere. Yet proving a direct link between smart phone use and declining mental health is tricky.
The challenge lies in nuance(微妙之處). A smart phone is a tool, used for everything from educational games to doom scrolling(刷負(fù)面新聞) on social media. Its effects on well-being depend not only on content but also on the age and developmental stage of the user. Research by Amy Orben at Cambridge suggests that social-media use is particularly harmful during puberty’ s(青春期) critical developmental windows—— ages 11-13 for girls, and 14-15for boys.
Banning smart phones in schools, however, may not be the solution some expect. A recent Lancet study by Victoria Goodyear found no significant difference in mental well-being between students in schools with strict phone bans and those with relaxed policies. The real issue, researchers argue, is overall screen time, not just school use.
To make matters worse, social-media firms refuse to share detailed user data, forcing researchers to rely on simple measures like screen time. Until a clearer picture emerges, policymakers risk presenting solutions without fully identifying the problem.
