二、閱讀理解(40 分)
When I was nine years old, my parents bought me a cockatiel from a local pet store. I named him Polly.
Like any young kid would be, I was excited to have a new friend. After a few weeks, however, the feeling
of excitement wore off. It’s no big surprise that, being a kid, I was not prepared for the huge responsibility (責任)
for taking care of Polly. Neither were my parents.
Polly had to live his whole life in a small , dirty cage (籠子). Unable to move his wings freely, he was
bored out of his mind. The bird ended up living a much shorter life than he would have done in the wild.
It’s a sad story, but it’s a story that has been all too common. No bird was born to live in a cage, yet
millions are kept behind bars (柵欄). Most of these birds are improperly cared for and die young. Many people
buy pet birds without thinking much, as my family did. They have no idea how much time, money and energy will
be needed to care for the birds. When the birds that seemed so cute and beautiful in pet stores turn out to be noisy,
many are left out. Some birds can even go mad because of the boredom and loneliness they end up feeling. They

may pull out their own feathers or peck (啄) over and over again at the bars of their cage.

You sigh when you are unhappy. Your parents give a thumbs-up for good grades. Soccer players high-five
after a victory. These are examples of body language. It uses the movement or position of your body. The way
that you stand, your hand gestures, the look on your face—these are all ways to communicate without words. In
fact, body language plays an important role in our daily life.
According to US scientist Edward T.Hall, in a conversation of 50 people, 65percent of people would use
body language. Another 23 experiments were done by other scientists, and they found that in some cases, people
can express themselves without any words at all. For example, if your friend asks you to come on a picnic, you
could give him an “OK” gesture without saying anything.
Sometimes, your words say one thing but your body language says another. You may touch your face
without noticing when you tell a lie. However, just like spoken language, body language doesn’t have the same
meaning around the world. It can have a totally different meaning in different cultures. While in some Asian
countries, it is rude to look straight at a person when you talk. But in the US and Europe, eye contact means you

Another example is greetings. In some Asian cultures, it’s common to bow one’s head or body. However,
in European countries, people may kiss on the face. Maoris (毛利人), the local people in New Zealand, touch
noses as a greeting.
It is necessary to learn body language in different cultures, so next time before you travel, you’d better
learn some body languages.

A.By telling a story. B.By asking questions.
C.By giving examples. D.By listing numbers.
