What’s the most popular song in the world Some people would say the Happy Birthday
Song without thinking. The song is sung in English and many other languages millions of times
every day around the world. For many of us, it might be the easiest English song. We learned it
at a young age. But do you know the history of this song Here’s the story behind the Happy
Birthday Song. Let’s take a look.
The melody (旋律 ) of the song went back to 1893. Two sisters—Patty and Mildred Hill
from America—wrote the song together. Patty was a school headteacher, and her older sister
Mildred was a pianist. At first, the song was called Good Morning to All. Teachers at the
school used it as a happy morning greeting to kids. The melody was easy to remember. And the
lyrics (歌詞) went like this: Good morning to you. Good morning to you. Good morning, dear
children. Good morning to all.
On a student’s birthday, the teachers changed the lyrics of “Good morning to you” to
“Happy birthday to you”. The song soon became popular. Children across America loved the
song so much and started singing it back to their teachers on their birthdays.
In 1924, Robert Coleman used the Hill sisters’ lyrics as the first verse (節(jié) ) and “Happy
birthday to you” as the second, making the song even more popular. Over time, this song
replaced the one written by the two sisters. The Happy Birthday Song became the one and only
birthday song. That’s the song we sing and love today.

2025 is the year of glacier preservation (冰川保護(hù)). And March 21st is set to be the first
World Day for Glaciers. This is to encourage everyone to help protect glaciers, which are
important for life on Earth.
Glaciers have shaped mountains and valleys (山谷 ) over Earth’s history. They are still
moving and changing landscapes (地貌) in many places today. But glaciers don’t just affect the
land. When glaciers melt (融化), they provide nutrients (養(yǎng)分) to lakes, rivers and oceans. These
nutrients help create the base (基礎(chǔ)) of the food chain in oceans and rivers. As glaciers melt,
they also create homes for plants and animals.
In some areas, glaciers are important water sources (水源) for people and wildlife. About
10% of the world’s land is covered by around 200,000 glaciers, storing (儲(chǔ)存 ) about 70% of
Earth’s fresh water. These glaciers feed big rivers and millions of people.
However, climate change is causing serious problems to glaciers. Many glaciers have
disappeared. For example, Colombia has lost 90% of its glaciers since the mid-19th century.
Scientists warn that if temperatures rise by 1.5℃ to 4℃, most glaciers could lose over 50% of
their mass (質(zhì)量) by the year 2100. If snow and ice in mountain areas continue to disappear,
there will be less water for drinking and farming. Floods (洪水 ) will also be more dangerous
because of growing glacier lakes.
29. What is the main purpose of the World Day for Glaciers
A. To study ancient ice. B. To mine glacier resources.
C. To celebrate winter sports. D. To encourage glacier protection.
30. What happens when glaciers melt
A. They create the food chin on land.
B. They move and change the landscape.
C. They turn into mountains and valleys.
D. They create homes for plants and animals.
31. How much of Earth’s freshwater is stored in glaciers
A. 10%. B. 50%. C. 70%. D. 90%.
32. What is happening to glaciers because of climate change
A. They are growing larger. B. They are disappearing.
C. They are turning into deserts. D. They are moving faster.

Every Sunday morning I take a walk by a lake near my home. And each time I walk by, I
see the same elderly woman sitting by the water with a small cage (籠子) beside her.
Last Sunday I was so curious that I walked to her. There were three turtles (烏龜) walking
around in the cage. She had a fourth turtle in her lap and she was carefully scrubbing (擦洗) it
with a brush.
“Hello,” I said. “I see you here every Sunday morning. If you don’t mind, I’d love to know
what you’re doing with these turtles.”
She smiled. “I’m cleaning off their shells (殼 ),” she answered. “The things on a turtle’s
shell, like algae (藻類(lèi)), reduces (削弱) the turtle’s ability to absorb heat (吸收熱量) and swim.
It can also weaken the shell over time.”
“Wow! That’s really nice of you!” I said.
She went on: “I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by this lake and
helping these little guys out. It’s my own strange way of making a difference.”
“But don’t most fresh water turtles live their whole lives with algae on their shells ” I
asked.
“Yes, sadly, they do,” she said.
“Well, you are very kind, but 99% of the turtles in the world don’t have kind people like
you to help them clean off their shells. So, are your kindness here truly making a difference
Maybe your time could be better used to do something else.”
The woman smiled. She looked down at the turtle in her lap, scrubbed off the last piece of
algae from its shell, and said, “Sweetie, if this little guy could talk, he’d tell you I just made all
the difference in the world.”
33. What does the elderly woman do every Sunday
A. She sells turtles. B. She swims in the lake.
C. She cleans turtles’ shells. D. She feeds fish by the lake.
34. Why does the woman clean the turtles

B. Because algae hurts their shells.
C. Because the government asks her to.
D. Because she wants to keep them as pets.
35. What does the writer think about the woman’s actions at first
A. She’s wasting her time. B. She should clean more turtles.
C. She’s hurting the turtles. D. She’s making a difference.
36. What does the woman mean with the underlined words in the last paragraph
A. The turtle doesn’t like being cleaned.
B. She only helps the turtles that can talk.
C. The turtle would thank her if it could talk.

Having trouble getting out of bed for school on Monday mornings Many teenagers feel
sleepy during the day because of homework, after-school activities, and wanting to use
electronic devices (設(shè)備). For example, more than half of the students in UK say they need more
time to sleep. 37
Quality (高質(zhì)量的 ) sleep is important for everyone, but it is especially important for
teenagers. 38 This is because adolescence (青春期 ) is a time of deep physical,
social and emotional growth. For students, sleep helps them do better in school. It improves
focus, strengthens memory and helps with thinking skills.
39 Scientists compared creative test scores between people who didn’t sleep
well and those who slept normally. The sleep-deprived group got lower scores. They repeated
the same mistakes and had trouble coming up with new ideas.
More recently, a team at MIT (麻省理工學(xué)院) found that sleep onset (睡眠開(kāi)始), a special
period of time at the beginning of sleep, is especially good for creativity. 40 When
people were asked to dream about a certain topic during this stage, they did better on creative
tasks about that topic after waking up.
A. Sleep also helps with creativity.
B. This is the time when we are just falling asleep.
C. Stop using digital devices at least one hour before bed.
D. And 77.3% of students in America don’t get enough sleep.
E. They need 9 to 10 hours of sleep each day—more than adults.

Safe Harbor (避風(fēng)港) is a story about “rescue” (拯救). It follows a girl
named Geetha. Geetha moves from India to the United States with her mum.
She has to leave her family, friends, and even her dog behind.
A new life is beginning and there are many problems at first. She faces
bullying (欺凌) at school because of her clothes, the food she eats and her
problems with the English language. She goes to the beach to make herself
feel better. There she meets a boy named Miguel. They have a lot in common and soon become

One day, at the beach, they find an injured (受傷的) baby seal (海豹). The seal is hurt by
the pollution in the sea. Geetha feels that the poor seal is just like herself. She and Miguel decide
to help this little seal get better. Geetha finds that she can use this chance to clean up the beach
and protect the animals living in the sea. So she starts a clean-up project with her new friend
Miguel. Soon, some nice kids join to help too. They help Geetha clean up an area by the sea and
build a “safe harbor” for the little seal. With their help, the baby seal gets well. Then Geetha sets
it free and lets it go back to the sea.
Geetha learns an important lesson from helping the little seal: even in bad situations, you
