He Jing, 36, comes from Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. In 2024, she climbed to the top of Mount Shishapangma in Xizang. She became the first person from China and the third woman in the world to climb all 14 of the world’s peaks (頂峰) over 8,000 meters without using supplemental oxygen (補充氧氣).
He Jing didn’t start climbing mountains until she was 18. Her first climb, in 2006, was in the Qinling Mountains. That made her interested in the sport. In 2012, she climbed her first mountain over 5,000 meters-Mount Siguniang in Sichuan Province. From then on, she has been trying to climb high mountains. In 2016, she reached her first 8,000-meter peak, Mount Cho Oyu, using only one bottle of oxygen. Then she decided to try future climbs without oxygen.
Climbing without oxygen is very dangerous. To get ready, she trained hard, running at least five times a week. She also climbed 200 flights of stairs (200層樓梯), carrying a 20-kilogram load (負荷) three times a week.
With her hard work, on May 14, 2022, she was the first woman from China to get to the top of Mount Qomolangma from the south side without using bottled oxygen. “Climbing mountains makes me happy. I will always be prepared to set off,” she said.

I had an experience of failure when I was learning to ride a bike.
At first, I always fell down. And my knees and hands got hurt. I really wanted to give up. But I didn’t. I thought about why I kept falling. And then I realized that I wasn’t balancing right and wasn’t using the brakes correctly. So, I practiced for hours and hours. Finally, I could ride the bike smoothly and didn’t fall anymore!
Through this experience, I learned that failure is not the end. And it taught me to be patient and keep trying in the face of difficulties.

At the beginning, I fell down again and again, which hurt my knees and hands. So I had a strong desire to give up. Nevertheless, I tried to figure out why I kept falling instead of giving up. Then I found that I couldn’t balance well and didn’t know how to use the brakes properly. So, I spent hours practicing over and over again. Eventually, I managed to ride the bike smoothly without any falls!
This experience made me understand that failure doesn’t mean the end. It also taught me to be patient and keep trying when I face difficulties.
