Does having a lot of money mean being successful I think Jason Harley, a professor and
an ex-millionaire, can be called a 20 (success) person. Many people think he must be

furniture. 21 to him, no one has lived a better life than he has after he decided to turn
his back on his fortune. He said that with all his fortune, he felt guilty when he saw there were
people who earned so little and could barely support themselves. In my mind, he's one of the

Jim Thorpe is one of the successful athletes of all time. He had amazing athletic abilities
and was well-known during his lifetime, yet that did not make Thorpe a stranger to
adversity(逆境).
Thorpe was an American Indian from Oklahoma who developed his extraordinary skills
in his youth through hard labor. It was also in his youth that he learned to endure hardship
brought upon by racial prejudice (偏見). Many would say his childhood was not easy. He grew
up poor and at age 9 his twin brother passed away and a few years later he lost both of his
parents.
But that did not stop him from doing what he loved and pursuing his dreams. Nothing
seemed to stop him, not even stolen shoes. Just hours before Thorpe was going to compete in
the Olympics, somebody stole his shoes. Thorpe improvised (臨時拼湊) by getting shoes out
of garbage. The shoes were two different sizes. He wore an extra pair of socks on one foot to
even them out.
He still went on to win two gold medals - winning each event he competed in except for
one, the javelin (標槍). The javelin was the only event he didn't win, probably because he had
never competed in that event before. It is interesting to note that Thorpe had tried to throw the
javelin once before in the Olympic trials. At the time, he didn't know that he could throw it
with a running start. He threw it standing still and was placed second.
I think Paul Dughi said it best, "It's hard to imagine that now professional athletes get
paid millions of dollars just to wear a particular brand of shoes. For Jim Thorpe, it didn't
matter what kind he wore."
30. What do we know about Thorpe
A. He gained athletic skills through hard training.
B. His success was no guarantee of a better life.
C. His career brought him both gains and losses.
D. He suffered many hardships throughout his life.
31. What most likely led to Thorpe's failure to win the javelin
A. Loss of his own sports shoes. B. A carefree attitude toward the event
C. Lack of experience in the event. D. A shortage of talent for the sport

Social media is one of the fastest-growing industries in today's world. A study conducted
by the US think tank (智囊團) Pew Research Center showed that 92 percent of teenagers go
online daily. The wide spread of social media has changed nearly all parts of teenagers' lives.
Changing relationships
High school student Elly Cooper from Illinois said social media often reduces
face-to-face communication. "It makes in-person relationships harder because people give
attention to their phones instead of their boyfriends or girlfriends," Cooper said.
There's also a greater possibility of things getting lost in translation over social media. "If
half of your relationship is over social media, you don't really know how the other person is
reacting," Sienna Schulte, a junior student from Illinois, said.
Yet, some people believe social media has made it easier to start relationships with
anyone from anywhere. Beth Kaplan from Illinois met her long-distance friend through social
media. He currently lives in Scotland, but they're still able to frequently communicate with
one another. "I can feel close to someone that I'm talking to via (通過) FaceTime," Kaplan said.
Wanting to be "liked"
The rise of social media has changed the way teenagers see themselves. The 19-year-old
Essena O'Neill announced on the social networking service Instagram that she was quitting
social media because it made her obsessed with appearing perfect online.
Negative comments also can do great damage to a teenager's self-esteem (自尊 ). In
particular, anonymous (匿名的) social media apps such as Yik Yak may provide opportunities
for cyber bullying. The app allows users within 5 miles (8km) to create and add comments to
everything. Teenagers who get negative comments on these sites can't help but feel hurt.
Opening new doors
However, Armin Korsos, a student from Illinois, takes advantage of the comments he
receives over social media to improve his videos on the social networking site Youtube.
"Social media can help people show themselves and their talents to the world in a way that
was never possible before," Korsos said.
高二英語試卷共 11頁 第6頁
{#{QQABbYIh5wCwkBRACZ77Q0FmCEgQkIATLQoOxUAKOAwKARFIBCA=}#}
But Korsos recognizes that social media has become a distraction. "Social media, though
it helps people connect with their friends and stay updated, is not all necessary."
33. What is the article mainly about
A. The major problems with social media.
B. The effects of social media on teenagers.
C. How teenagers benefit from social media.
D. Why social media attracts teenagers so much.
34. How does social media change relationships, according to the article
A. It pushes people to meet their friends more often offline.
B. It encourages people to pay more attention to those around them.
C. It enables users to understand accurately what others are talking about online.
D. It allows people to keep in touch with their friends who live far away more easily.
35. Which statement about the use of social media would Armin Korsos probably agree with
A. Social media can easily become an addiction, despite its benefits.
B. The use of social media taught him to turn negative comments into motivations.
C. Social media is mostly a distraction to teenagers, so it is unnecessary for it to exist.
D. If used well, social media can create opportunities for teenagers to develop themselves.

After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the
difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance: curiosity and
discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never
known an average man who had both. The two belong together.
Together, these deep human urges (驅(qū)策力) count for much more than ambition. Galileo
was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning
Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history
were curious and asked in discontent, “Why Why Why ”
Fortunately curiosity and discontent don’t have to be learned. We are born with them and
need only retake them. “The great man,” said Mencius (孟子), “is he who does not lose his

child’s heart.” Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging
custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires restful average. It encourages us to
occupy our own little corner, to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, to be satisfied.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and
liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, if we had missed the chance. We will
probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend
who couldn’t arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it.
Now she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.
One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven’t any special ability Most
people don’t. There are only a few geniuses. You haven’t any time That’s good, because it’s
always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts
of Uncle Tom’s Cabin while cooking. You’re too old Remember that Thomas Costain was 57
when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when
she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you’ll
never be more alive than you are at this moment.
36.In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to ________.
A.present an argument B.make a comparison
C.raise a question D.propose a definition
37.According to the author, a person with “his child’s heart” tends to ________.
A.try to avoid making mistakes B.be curious about the unknown
C.follow the custom all the time D.lead a simple and satisfying life
38.What can we learn from Paragraphs 6 and 7
A.Lack of talent and time is no reason for taking no action.
B.Experience and special abilities are the keys to success.
C.The genius can get things done easily and creatively.
D.Satisfying yourself can help you become an expert.

If you are a motivated person, it is easy to put your personal goals ahead of those of the
people around you. It is natural and not necessarily a bad thing. However, it is crucial to learn
to be a team player. Acting as a part of a team builds character, teaches empathy(共鳴), and
eventually achieves goals. 40 Here's why:
Group Effort Is More Effective than Individual Effort. You can run a small business
pretty independently, but if you ever plan on being employed or running a business that
employs others, you'll have to learn how to work with other people. 41
Improving Others Equals Improving Yourself. If you're on a team, your personal success
helps make you a good team player. This is because most people are at least a little bit
competitive, whether they admit it or not. When you do well, you set a standard that others
will want to meet. By pushing yourself, you help push the people on your team. 42 When
you see someone you're working with do something better than you, more often than not,
you'll push yourself to meet that standard.
Your Attitude Matters. You should be the kind of person who wants to be a team player.
People respect the ability to work well with others more than anything. Your individual
actions have an impact, but if you're reluctant to do something to help your team, it'll be
evident and your contribution will be less appreciated. 43
44 As much as your work is important and necessary to the success of your team, the
success of your team is important and necessary to your success.
A. Of course, this works both ways.
B. There is a mutual (相互的) effect between personal success and team achievement.
高二英語試卷共 11頁 第9頁
{#{QQABbYIh5wCwkBRACZ77Q0FmCEgQkIATLQoOxUAKOAwKARFIBCA=}#}
C. People with team spirit try hard to make their team the best of all.
D. Having a genuine interest in your team helps you as well as those you're working with.
E. Those who show respect for others will be respected in turn.
F. All of these things, in turn, contribute to your personal success.
G. The most impressive achievements are accomplished by groups of people, not individuals.

When Jan and Brian Dutcher moved to San Diego for Brian’s new job at San Diego State
University, the neighbours smiled and introduced themselves. But there were no “bring a plate”
invitations, no car pooling (拼車) for her daughters Liza, 12 and Erin, 15.
“The families really didn’t know each other,” says Jan. “We are far from relatives.
Neighbours are our family.”
So Jan, an artist, decided to repeat a project she had done for Liza’s fifth-grade class.
They invited each neighbour to paint his or her face on a big canvas (帆布畫布). The finished
piece would become the new family photo.
First, Jan painted a grid (網(wǎng)格) on the canvas and put it up in the garage with a table of
paints nearby. Then whenever she was home, the “art room” door was up, with an open
invitation for neighbours to paint. The first to stop in were kids riding by. “They thought it
was cool,” says Jan, but the adults weren’t so keen. “They were afraid they would mess it up.”
But as words slowly spread, they came, some using their driver’s license photos as models.
Then something started to happen. They returned to see who had painted, or if they could
recognize who was who. In Jan’s garage, they began to chat about schools, jobs and families,
almost daily. Wendy, who lived across the street and was seriously ill, came in her wheelchair
to watch the fun. Neighbours began to offer their support.
This year has been different in the neighbourhood. Neighbours watch over each other’s
property when they are not around. Families take turns hosting happy hours.“We’re watching
over each other now just like in the painting,”says Jan.
